What Books does your Mature Teen Boy like?

Didn't see this mentioned yet, but my 13 yo asked for the Hobbit and the first Lord of the Rings. I hadn't thought about Michael Crichton or Stephen King, but I bet my son would love to read those! Thanks for the ideas!

He read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and the Outsiders last year. They are the right age for Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, I think, too.

My 13 yo loves Sherlock Holmes. He also reads a lot of WWII non-fiction books. He's a history buff.

I generally take him to the library a couple of times each week and he does a pretty good job of finding books that he likes. He gets books from both the younger section (currently re-reading the Narnia series) and adult section.

My 14 yo is reading a lot of biography. Nelson Mandela was his most recent. He's also enjoying the required reading at school this year which so far has included Farenheit 451(Ray Bradbury) and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He likes Dan Brown and is bummed that he doesn't have time for the new one just yet. He doesn't like the fantasy sci-fi so much, never has except Harry Potter which we read to him when he was very small and then he read again himself. I'm trying to nudge him towards some history or classic novels but it may be a little early. I also think he'd love the Odyssey and the Iliad but since he rolls his eyes at fantasy fiction, he's dragging his feet on them. Does your son have friends who can recommend books to him? That's how my son gets a lot of his choices.

I hadn't thought of Crighton either, I have copies of several somewhere in the house. Congo seems like it would be a good read for a 13-14yo boy.

Over the summer my son read the Hunger games by Suzanne Collins and is now reading the sequel Catching Fire. He really liked the Boy in stripped pajamas.

The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks

(i've plugged this book TWICE on here today. When do i get my royalties? :cool2:)

I was going to suggest this. My sixteen year old son loved/loves it!

He also is reading and enjoying some modern classics such as Lord of the Flies, A Lesson Before Dying, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.

Two names I used to reccommend when I worked at a book store were Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time series) and Terry Pratchett. They are both fantasy type authors, but the Pratchetts have some comedy thrown in for good measure. It always amazed me how many different books there are for teenage girls, but next to nothing for teenage boys. I did a lot of digging to find some titles that would be exciting enough to keep the boys interested, with subject matter that wouldn't upset mom and dad. Of course, if subject matter isn't an issue, then definitely go for the Stephen King and Dean Koontz (I started reading both when I was fourteen).

Another great choice would be Douglas Adams "A Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series, these books are so funny and well written!

And while I'm not now nor have I ever been a teenage boy, I do tend to like a lot of "boy oriented" things...video games, action movies, heavy metal, aall things Star Wars, just to name a few
