What books did you read at school?

bert and nan, flossie and freddie :teeth:

I just looked the books up-i'm guessing most people read the revised versions but it looks like the ones I read were the originals that were published as early as 1904:faint: I remember reading them in the '60's and '70's and knowing they were horribly outdated (and racist) but I had no idea how old they were (no wonder the covers were all falling off them and the binding was barely holding them together).
I had to go look at mine and try and find the publishing date. Well, it has no publishing date on it, but was published in Ravine, Wisconsin. The covers are not falling off yet, but close and the binding is starting to fail. You have to handle with care. I wonder how old it really is? I guess I could write the publisher.

"alot of Shakespeare", lol. Our 9th grade teacher loved Shakespeare and we spent the whole year on everything Shakespeare. The result is: I hate anything to do with Shakespeare, lol.
You are lucky to read such classics. I can't even recall what we read, which says alot I guess:)

Shakespeare can be amazing, but I've always felt that it should be watched rather than read. Unfortunately, most students don't have access to productions of Shakespeare's plays, but it would be great if they did.

Also, you have to have an interested teacher. Ours was quiet and read in a quiet voice and explained in a monotone quiet voice. He never got excited or explained things. No wonder I hated it.

It’s been a while, but here’s what I can recall reading:

Elementary and Jr high required reading.
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Indian in the Cupboard
Blue Willow Plate
Bridge to Terebithia
Sarah Plain and Tall
Little House in the Big Woods
The Old Man and the Sea
The Pearl
To Kill A Monkingbird
Tom Sawyer
Huck Finn
Of Mice and Men

High School
The Bean Trees
Romeo and Juliet
Night
Animal Farm
The Jungle
Catcher in the Rye
Pride and Prejudice
Beloved
Macbeth
Lord of the Flies
The Bluest Eye
Black Boy
The Awakening
The Joy Luck Club
One Flew Over the Cucoos Nest

I know there’s more, but can’t recall what. We were fortunate to read quite a few banded books.

For fun I loved Nancy Drew, Babysitters Club, Sleepover Friends, and later VC Andrew’s.

Where did you go to school to have a jr high list of that manner

The ones I recall from Jr-Sr High English classes are The Pearl, Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath, A Farewell to Arms, Of Mice and Men, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Crucible, and The Jungle. I am probably forgetting more than I am remembering!

There are some (Cannery Row, Brave New World, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm…), that I can’t recall if we were required to read them, or I just did so on my own.

In addition, a US History course had us read a number of paperbacks instead of a textbook. I know these included FDR and the New Deal, Only Yesterday, and Fire in the Lake. The other titles are not coming to me right now.

I am sure we read a variety of books. I mostly remember “Return of the Native” as that was a tough one to get through.

about a year ago I went through about 3 dozen banker boxes of books we had accumulated dating back to my childhood. I knew some of the books we had are now big 'no-no's' but I was shocked at how many of the kid's books I have that have fallen out of favor. never thought the designated 'banned book' shelf in our home library would grow to include the likes of dr. suess, the berenstain bears and shel silverstein :(

Shel Silverstein is an example of an author with abnormal history.for a children's author.. sidewalk was a great as was the giving tree... but WOKE caught up with him

Cry, the Beloved Country, A Separate Peace, the Old Man and the Sea, Scarlet Letter, Red Badge of Courage, Lord of the Flies, Main Street, the Great Gatsby, Macbeth, Lord Jim, Grapes of Wrath, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Great Expectations…
So many wonderful books.

The one that stuck with me (as in I actually really enjoyed it) was A Separate Peace. I really should go back and reread that.
We had that one in English class in 8th grade. I had the worst time getting into it. We never finished it because our teacher went out on medical leave in the middle of the year and they couldn't keep a sub so they split us up among the other 4 classrooms in the grade. I come across it again years later and read it and enjoyed it then though.

e, Great Expectations…
So many wonderful books.
.... now there is an oxymoron...as a substitute I encountered a class that rioted and had to call the principal... listening to Pink Floyd way to long... they just could not...no..will not endure Pip one more hour... teachers around me saw it coming so they first respond .... never read but if I had to teach I would have started in the middle with havisham

Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins were grade school staple reads but I actually preferred Robin Kane or Trixie Belden mystery books.

anyone remember the beverly cleary and judy blume books? I loved reading about ramona and fudge. decades later I got addicted to barbara park's 'junie b jones' books when my oldest discovered them.
