What are these famous zebra domes I keep hearing about at AKL? Are they a dessert, a pastry? Just wondering it seems like everyone loves them we are finally staying there this year so just wondering what to look for.

It's a little bite sized round dessert. When you buy them from the Mara (food court) at AKL you get 5 in the package or if you go to Boma they're on the buffet. It's a coffee/chocolate flavored dessert. You don't even taste the coffee though. My husband and his family love these so much we have to bring a cooler with us when we stay at AKL to bring some back to them.

They are like a small piece of cookie/cake with a mousse filling and covered in white chocolate with a chocolate drizzle. They are the things of Disney lore like the Dole Whip.

I think you should try them once but to tell the truth - meh?:confused3 I didn't think they were all that great, but some people love them. Of course I don't like Doles Whips either. :rotfl:

Did you go on vacation with us? This would have been my exact description and analysis. I didn't taste the coffee flavor and they were good, but not something I would go out of my way to get. To be honest, I thought the carrot cake was the better option in the Mara food court...

They are little mounds of heaven! Yes, you can get them at Mara (Quick Service) or At Boma on the buffet. Definitely worth saving room!

It's the white domed dessert with chocolate stripes drizzled on it (just below the blueberry tart in the picture)

We actually were severely underwhelmed by the zebra domes...the candy shell is waxy (kind of reminded me of cheap pretzel candy coating) The inside was kind of sickeningly sweet...and the kahlua taste is very strong (yes, it's real booze in there) Would not make a special trip to get these.

The bread pudding with the rum sauce...well that's another story

I didn't care for the Zebra Dome. A lot of people like it; it gets tons of hype on the DIS.

I didn't even finish the one I got. One little bite was more than enough.

I also was underwhelmed by Zebra Domes...although in general I am not a fan of mousse type desserts...they were tasty I just found the texture a bit weird for my taste.

Dole Whips however, now that's a different story!!!

Zebra domes are a little piece of adult heaven. :thumbsup2 If you don't like Kahlua or coffee, you won't like them. There's also a big difference in the ones at Boma which are warm from sitting out on the buffet when compared to those in the fridge at Mara. Many people prefer them cold over warm.

I'm planning on eating a zillion of them in just two weeks! :)

I, too, was very underwhelmed with them when I tried them at Boma.... and I like coffee flavored things... Maybe if it was cold I might have liked it better. Not sure. But there are many other desserts out there that I would rather have!

Clearly this is another love-it or hate-it question. Personally, I found them to be the least impressive dessert on the Boma buffet. They were far too sweet for my taste (and I would subsist on sugar if it provided protein) and, aside from the overpowering sweetness, very bland.

They were, however, flying off the buffet line as quickly as they could restock them, so I wonder if quality suffers during times of high consumption?

Anyway, add me to the "meh" list...

OMG--thanks so much for mentioning the alcohol content of these desserts!
Being at Disney, it hadn't occurred to me to ask about alcohol in dishes there--something I MUST avoid. Now I know to ask about that along with the gluten content, which my husband needs to track. Thought this would only be an issue at Epcot.

Thanks again!

They are made with Kahlua, if your a fan, you'll love them. They're not your average dessert and I love them. I always head to Mara for them, love that I can use a snack credit on these.

You're welcome. My recollection is that all menus mention alcohol ingredients in the food descriptions (whether it's wine in the meat sauce or liqueur in the dessert) so you should be o.k. at menu-restaurants. I also recall little placards by the foods with alcohol on the buffet...specifically the zebra domes & the sauce for the bread pudding there (and I think some other buffet, but can't remember which?)

Anyway, Disney's very good about dietary allergies/limitations, so anytime you have a question, just ask your server...they will actually have the chef come out and discuss exactly what's-what.:thumbsup2

According to the Jambo in-room dining menu, you can order them to be delivered to your room. I love Kahlua, so I'm going to have to try them at least once! :goodvibes

This is how they describe them:

Signature Zebra Domes - Amarula mousse dome glazed with a white and dark chocolate zebra pattern (serves 2) $20.00

I have been wanting to try these little desserts ever since I saw them on the food porn. I will finally be able to get to in September since we have ADRs at Boma :goodvibes. I understand how people may think this dessert is overhyped because in March I tried the Schoolbread for the first time and was disappointed by it, but with that said, I will be trying the Zebra Domes just so I can be my own critic and see what everyone is talking about.

I glad it wasn't just me!! :goodvibes

I tried the Schoolbread for the first time and was disappointed by it.

We tried both the Schoolbread and Zebra Domes on our past trip. The schoolbread was ok but we both loved the Zebra Domes from Mara.

My husband is a huge fan of Zebra Domes.. Me on the other hand..well.. I think they are pretty good, but I'd rather have something else to snack on. I do love my Dole Whip, though. Yum!
