What are your top ten all time favorite songs? (What does Rolling Stone Know?)

Great topic! My dad and I enjoy arguing about any top numbers list that Rolling Stone publishes.

This is really hard to even narrow down to ten, but I'll give it a try:

1. All Along the Watchtower- Hendrix (DMB plays a mean cover, though)
2. Desperado- The Eagles
3. Seek Up- Dave Matthews Band
4. Cortez the Killer- Neil Young
5. Dancing Nancies-Dave Matthews Band
6. The Ocean-Led Zeppelin
7. Another Brick in The Wall (Part 2)- Pink Floyd
8. This Year's Love- David Gray
9. Landslide- Fleetwood Mac
10. Both Sides- Joni Mitchell

And these are also in consideration:

11. Hotel California- The Eagles
12. The Weight- The Band
13. The Rose - Bette Midler
14. Omaha- Counting Crows
15. Imagine- John Lennon
16. Strawberry Fields- The Beatles
17. Across the Universe- The Beatles
18. Kashmir- Led Zeppelin
19. Lover Lay Down- Dave Matthews Band (last one, I promise)
20. Bed of Roses- Bon Jovi

All of these are in no particular order.

This is kind of a weird list, but they are my favorites!

1. Kiss -- Prince
2. Groove is in the Heart -- Deeelite
3. Love in an Elevator -- Aerosmith
4. Love Shack -- B-52s
5. Convoy -- CW McCall
6. Delta Dawn -- Tanya Tucker
7. I Cross My Heart -- George Strait
8. Jeremy -- Pearl Jam
9. Come on Ride That Train -- Quad City DJs
10. Whoomp! There it Is -- Tag Team

OK no offense, ya'll, but these lists so far are pretty wonder bread...time to diversify...

1.When Doves Cry or 1999-- Prince
2.Ain't Misbehavin-- Louis Armstrong
3.I Heard It Through The Grapevine-- Marvin Gaye
4.Superstition-- Stevie Wonder
5.Strange Fruit-- Billy Holiday
6.Proud Mary-- Tina Turner
7.Let's Stay Together-- Al Green
8.Shining Star-- Earth, Wind, and Fire
9.Respect-- Aretha Franklin
10.Billie Jean-- Michael Jackson

(Alternate- Robert Cray Band-- Midnight Stroll)

I can't really only list ten... but off the top of my head here is what I can think of.

I know people think I'm stupid for trying to get people to narrow them to 10, but I think it's way more interesting that way. It's not "How many good songs can you name?" It's "You can only name 10 songs - which ones are the most important to you?"

:D

This is a tough question, but I'll do my best answering:

1. Pig- Dave Matthews Band
2. #41-Dave Matthews Band
3. Motorcycle Driveby- Third Eye Blind
4. When You Wish Upon a Star- Jiminy Cricket...no one said it had to be a rock song, did they? Great song, hope for it to be my wedding song someday.
5. Gimme Shelter- Rolling Stones
6. Day in the Life- the Beatles
7. God Only Knows- the Beach Boys
8. Dream On- Aerosmith
9. Masterplan- Oasis
10. Tie btween Tear by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Luv Your Life by Silverchair, and about 10,000 other songs

Here's mine:

Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
Piece of my Heart – Janis Joplin
Crying – Roy Orbison
Good Night Irene – The Weavers
Imagine – John Lennon
Fire and Rain – James Taylor
Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Chain of Fools – Aretha Franklin
Spirit in the Sky – Norman Greenbaum
I Can’t Make You Love Me – Bonnie Raitt
End of the Line – The Traveling Wilburys

Ok, ok, so there are 11! Pretend I can't count or something, I can't cut it down any further. There's just too much good :rockband: out there.

Btw, I love reading everyone's list. I really like lots of those posted so far.

I wouldn't say it's stupid at all, but definitely challenging, especially if you listen to a lot of different genres. It's a great topic, because I think musical taste tells a lot about a person. It's usually one of the first things I ask someone about when I meet them.

I'll try - here goes:

1. DREAM ON - AEROSMITH
2. WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR - DISNEY
3. PINK - AEROSMITH
4. DISEASE - MATCHBOX TWENTY
5. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU - MARIAH CAREY
6. O HOLY NIGHT - JOSH GROBAN (OR ANY VERSION OUT THERE)
7. SWEET EMOTION - AEROSMITH ( ARE WE SEEING A TREND HERE :cool1: )
8. PART OF YOUR WORLD - DISNEY
9. TIME IN NEW ENGLAND - BARRY MANILOW
10. THE PRAYER - CELINE DION AND ANDREA BOCELLI

Music definitely tells a story about the person that listens to it.

And yeah Frozone, this is one heavily vanilla list. I wasn't brought up on classic R & B, Motown or Soul so I don't really have any as favorites. But there are many a damn fine song I like.

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay---Otis Redding
ABC---Jackson 5
The New Black and Tan Fantasy---Duke Ellington
What a Wonderful World---Louis Armstrong (Our wedding dance song)
Cruisin'---Smokey Robinson
Purple Rain---Prince
Just One Look---Doris Troy
Unforgettable---Nat King Cole

In no order...and subject to change at whim... :D

So Cruel - U2
Halo - Depeche Mode
Con Te Partiro - Andrea Bocelli
Something - The Beatles
The Scientist - Coldplay
A Letter to Elise - The Cure
Kiss the Girl - The Little Mermaid Soundtrack
Ordinary World - Duran Duran
On My Own - Les Mis Soundtrack
Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues

Glad to see So Cruel on another person's list. Judging from your list, we'd get along pretty well!

Yep, after looking at your list again, we seem to have a similar taste in music!! I happen to listen to and like several you have listed as well!

Isn't So Cruel one of the best U2 songs ever? Not just anyone can appreciate that song...it takes a special kinda soul!! The melody and lyrics are exceptional. It's haunting.

Seems to me that the songs I liked best are the ones that kind of commemorate past events and such. 'So Cruel' is definitely one of them. It's something I'd gladly NOT relive but it was quite an interesting time, too.

So how 'bout it folks? What songs speak to you about your past?

Well, U2 is bascially the background music of my life but here's a few others that also remind my of the past...

Fields of Gold - Sting
Apart - The Cure
Somewhere in My Broken Heart - Billy Dean
To Wish Impossible Things - The Cure
A Song Remembers When - Trisha Yearwood
The Joker - Steve Miller Band
With Tomorrow - This Mortial Coil
Walking in My Shoes - Depeche Mode

Of course, there's many more...maybe we shoud start a new thread... :D
