What are you handing out for Halloween?

We usually get an assortment of miniature chocolate bars. Then we get a bag of smarties for the kids without costumes and stickers for the babies. We get anywhere from 100 to 250 kids, it just depends on the year. We usually make up goody bags or buy big candy bars for the neighborhood kids (something my dad used to do)

This year we'll be out of town and trick or treating with family in the Boston area.

I made bags that have life savers gummies, twizzlers, skittles fizzlers, twix, hershey bars, milky way and three muskateers. All of the candies are individually wrapped/sealed, every parent I know throws out all the candy that isn't. There's 10 pieces of candy in each bag, I hope I get lots of trick or treaters or I will be eating a lot of candy which I don't need.

I made the bags up already because I leave for DW this morning and get back right before Halloween. I know I'll be tired from the trip so wanted to have everything ready. :thumbsup2

We never had trick or treaters in our old house and I always loved giving out candy so I am excited that we moved into a community that gets ToTers.

I like to make up bags like my Mom always did. I made the younger kids bags up already. They will get fruit roll up, lollipops, kit kat and marshmallows.

The other candy I have are crunch bars and grand bars...and some other stuff that I cannot remember.

I'm not sure what were going to hand out yet, I'll just see what is reasonable priced (and good tasting) when we go get the candy; I have to wait till the last minute to buy our candy, otherwise we will eat it and have to buy more:rotfl:

When I was a kid, my next door neighbors always gave me a full sized candy bar instead of whatever they're passing out to the masses. I loved them for that gesture, so I bought a box of full sized candy bars for the dozen neighborhood kids I know by name and sight. I bought a mixed box of Reeses, Kit Kats, Almond Joy and Hershey bars. The good stuff I tell ya :thumbsup2

.

My neighbor and I both give out full size bars to every kid that comes- it is easier than making those bags of 5 little things and I don't think it costs all that much more. I just can't take one little fun sized piece of chocolate and give that to a kid- it was always 4 or 5 so once you give that then its the same price as a full sized bar!
For the little ones in the nieghborhood its different- my daughter is older now but as of last year when she went to 4 immediate neighbors she would get a whole bag packed with things from a new shirt, to a toy and a bunch of other things---well now that we have 2 other little ones in my immediate neighbors I have bought them the special treat bags- I bought those pumpkins that they carry and stuffed each one with different candy, matchbox cars, some books etc....can't wait till the little ones come this year!
When my daughter goes trick or treating she will also stop back and dump her candy before going back out- will we just recycle the smarties, tootsie rolls, starburst, skittles or other garbage type candy and bags of pretzels and give them out to kids that come too.

I had a Halloween party for my DD Friday night and we had a candy buffet. That was a huge success.

I am giving out the extra candy from that. I have smarties, bubble gum, snickers, york peppermint patties, blow pops, kisses, hersheys candy bars, rollos I forget what else but I have a huge bin of it. I live in a huge neighborhood and this is the first year here but I am told we get hit hard.

I also buy raisins that I give out to the kids that don't have a costume and I buy little backs of goldfish for the really little kids. I am always shocked at the parents that will bring a baby around, one that obviously can't and should not be eating candy. We all now that it's for them and that just goes against the spirit of the event. I buy full sized candy bard for the kids we know.

My town has an ordinance concerning trick or treaters, it specifies when it takes place and the ages allowed to trick or treat.

We really decorate for Halloween to make it more fun.

I usually buy a bag every time I go to the grocery store, this time I bought a bag for the buffet, knowing that there would be a lot of left overs I could use for trick or treaters.

Lisa

Snack size Nestle's chocolate bars, made in a factory that does not process peanuts. Two or three per kid.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Kit Kats. We have enough older kids that sure it's a bribe, and if there is any left overs I don't mind eating them :thumbsup2

I don't get a ton of trick or treaters even though there are a bunch of kids around because I live in a neighborhood of people who don't celebrate Halloween, so instead of coming to my block where half the houses don't give out candy, people skip our neighborhood and start a couple of blocks down where the Orthodox Jewish section sort of peters out.
However I always have lots of candy on hand just in case. My kids pick it out, as they get the leftovers, so it's always their favorites-Skittles, Starburst, Nerds, Laffy Taffy-all the fruit crap that I would toss, but the kids seem to like better than the chocolate that I love.

OP here.

I bought two big bags of assorted chocolates (hershey's, recee's, whoppers,etc---they each have 95 pieces in it) Then a big bag of tootsie rolls, bag has over 200 pieces.

Then next Sunday when I go grocery shopping again, I'll probably pick up another 3-4 bags of the 95 piece ones. That should about do it, I think.

And I always did what a PP said, once my boys came back from ToTing, I would recycle what they didn't want right back out.

I do not know where all the children come from, but we get tons of TOTers. We never have enough candy to last the night and I buy lots of it. In my parents neighborhood across town the police have to sweep through to keep the streets driveable. The city or HOA should really post signs at the entrance asking parents to keep kiddos on the sidewalks. Most of the families have taken to sitting in their garages on lawn chairs with trash cans full of candy. It's wild. We love it. I gave out drink pouches last year along with candy. I bought a light up Dracula's Pub sign from Big Lots and we offered blood (fruit punch) or plasma (lemonade). Kids LOVED that! I was thinking about offering it to my parents since they have the wackier neighborhood and could have a much better set up in their garage. They still sell that sign if anyone is looking for a fun idea.

You never know what the weather will be like in Texas so we try to avoid chocolates. I avoid super sticky candies because of braces. I make separate treat bags for neighborhood kids also. They get the good stuff and McD's coupons.

For TOT candy I buy rainbow sour belts and lik a stick pouches from the Dollar General. They are 10 for $1 so it works out cheaper than buying the 50 count boxes from Target. The poor cashiers hate me pirate:. Then it's lots of bagged stuff to make into a mix (lemonheads, poprocks, smarties).

I haven't bought anything yet, which is so unlike me.

In the past I had hot cocoa packets and goldfish crackers. Believe it or not, some of the kids were really excited to have the hot cocoa! I just thought it was something different and seeing as most years it is colder it would be a good warm up treat for them when they got home.

So far I've got Pixie Sticks, red licorice, M&Ms, Junior Mints, Nerds, Tootsie Rolls, and the mini Hershey bar assortment...still need to get more candy, as we ran out last year & had to take a break to go to the store for reinforcements. :rotfl:

The candy all gets put into the large sized plastic cauldron that they sell at Wal-Mart, if that gives you any idea of how much candy we hand out in one night

Yep, that's exactly what we use too. Always filled to the brim and usually need a few extra bags. Gotta love Halloween!!!

I'd bought a big bag of Nestle's assorted chocolate candy and a big bag of Skittles from Sams. Good thing DH opened the chocolate and ate some. Obviously heat had gotten to them, because they had a dusty white coating on them. I was going to return them, but dh said he'd eat them. So now I'll grab another bag of Skittles instead.

We're going over on base to take my friend's kids trick or treating on Officer Row.. should get lots of good candy! They organize TOT by neighborhood, so after we're done there we'll go back to their house and pass out candy. I've got kitkat, reeses, goldfish and pretzels to hand out. After the kids go to bed, we're going to enjoy some mead and hang out around a fire :)

We have a lot of food allergies and friends who are diabetic so I dont hand out candy anymore. I have done stickers, pencils, erasers and such.

This year I am doing (again, I stockpile new in bag extras/doubles the girls get through the year for this) McDs happy meal toys for the littleones and mech pencils and highlighters for the older kids.:goodvibes
