I'm working all day so shopping for me is out of the question.

My housecleaners are supposed to come - I wonder if I'll get a call if they won't be showing up?

I've heard Brazilians here are not working Mon...dont underestimate or overlook it, I live in a small town...

I personally will be shopping & dining Monday.

I'll be cleaning the house, as usual, on Monday.

I went to dinner at my local Mexican place last night. There was a sign on the door that said something to this affect:

To our valued customers:

As many of you know, Monday, May 1 has been designated as a date for rallies across the United Stated to support immigation law changes. As many of our Hispanic employess have already notified us that they will not be in to work that day, and our Hispanic food suppliers have notified us that they will not be making deliveries that day, we unfortunately are being forced to close for the day.

Please understand that we, the owners of "XXX" do NOT condone or agree with these actions. We immigrated here legally and built a life for ourselves, becoming American citizens and running our modest business through hard work and the support of our loyal customers.

We expect to reopen as usual on Tuesday and appreciate your understanding.

:sad2:

Personally if I were in that position, I would have told my employees that if they were scheduled to work on Monday and don't show up, they need not bother to come back on Tuesday. I'm sure that there are hundreds of teens and young adults in this area who would be more than happy for the opportunity to take their place.

I am the granddaughter of immigrants and the mother of two immigrants. I will not be shopping on Monday in solidarity.

I'm not sure why this would make anyone angry. No one is forcing you to shop or not to shop.

It's the principal behind it. Why would you think it's OK to simply allow anyone and everyone who wants to cross our borders unchecked and work here to do so?

:thumbsup2

Our employee told us they were not coming in to work their usual Mon, DH told him he would void contract & fire him, he agreed to work Sun (he has never, ever worked on Sun, very religious day for our Brazilian community) to get job done instead of coming in Mon - that is how passionate some are about this cause, Americans need to be just as passionate!

If I had the transportation, I'd be out shopping.

Not shopping, not eating out.

I welcome anyone trying to make a better life for themselves or their family.

Mexican immigrants have been here a long time. I cannot imagine what this area would be like if they weren't here cleaning up after us and putting food on our tables. I also think it's completely crazy to believe that Americans would do some of the jobs our undocumented friends do if they only paid more.

Well said.

I don't think that any of us have a problem with people immigrating LEGALLY when there are jobs available for them. I think we have a problem with people who are here ILLEGALLY who are taking from the system with education and healthcare, and not paying taxes into the system. Frankly there are PLENTY of people here who would LOVE to get some of the jobs the illegals are taking. There are also PLENTY of people waiting to immigrate LEGALLY who would LOVE to have those jobs.

As long as we have people on welfare and unemployment in this country, we have no reason to allow illegal immigrants to take jobs. Frankly half the people who are on welfare should be forced off. When left with the decision to take a job they might not want as opposed to living on the street and eating out of dumpsters, it's not rocket science to figure out that they'd be working.

Why should a child born in the US to illegal parents be given an automatic birthright--US citizenship? That's wrong, and only encourages illegals.

Why should children get free ride public education when they aren't here legally?

Why should our public health care system be so overburdened with illegals who don't contribute to our tax base when our military and their dependents often get substandard healthcare, and are paid so little that many military families qualify for food stamps?

There are only so many dollars in the pot. I'd rather see them spent on people who aren't breaking the law. The rest of them should get a one way ticket to wherever they came from. They are NOT helping this country, they are bankrupting it.

Not doing anything different.

Sorry, if you want to come here, get your behind to the USA legally. And if you are going to do it, speak the language. This comes from someone who has part of their family in a different country of non-English speakers. Those of my family who came to the USA feel the same way too.

I understand wanting a good life, but do it right, and quit complaining about it. If you don't like the laws, don't come here. I know it isn't easy to come here (I've watched friends who are married go through the whole issue with a spouse), and I believe it is that way for a reason ;)

I am going shopping and going to get a pedicure. Nobody is going to tell me what I can do in my own country. My grandparents came here legally and they didn`t ask to have The Star Spangled Banner sung in Polish either.

When my father started kindergarden he did not speak English. He was sent home with a note pinned to his jacket that said "Do not send him back until he learns English". Guess what he learned English and went back to school. Nobody complained that he was being treated unfairly.

ITA with the above post and will be shopping and dining out on Monday. When illegals (and others ) try to hold American businesses hostage for a day it does not bode well for their cause. If we allow this type of behavior what is next?

I am a legal naturalized citizen who had to go through all of the legal channels to stay in this country when I was a 5 yr old. It took my parents another 5 years before I was LEGAL.

Staying away from downtown for sure; they are expecting a half million or so illegals to be protesting, so should provide for some huge traffic tieups. :confused3

I am with you Anne! I wonder if that Mexican place you posted about will be losing any customers permanently because of this.

I hate anything that rewards people who do the wrong thing (illegal immigrants) when so many have spend time and effort to do the right thing (the legal immigration process).

My boyfriend's mother is a legal immigrant who is trying to become a citizen. She has taken 2 community ed classes to learn English and always asks me to teach her certain words and phrases. I've seen my boyfriend's mother studying to become a citizen- those tests are not easy. Why do others think they don't have to go through the proper channels? And where in the world do people think unlimited amounts of illegal immigrants are going to live? Are they planning on clearing out a spot in their home? I'm certainly not!

When my great grandparents came here from Poland, they needed a job, full paperwork, a sponsor, a complete health exam and a modicum of English- enough to fill out the paperwork and pass inspection. There was a reason behind it, that's for sure.

The most shameful part of this protest is that parents are letting their children cut school and miss out on education because of it. What a slap in the face, since they're getting a free education from this country!

I will be working 7-2:40. Then I will be hitting some stores and picking up dinner before I have to go back to work at 5.

P.S.

Those that are not working, shopping, going to school, etc. - where will they be all day?

Not like our thrifty war going on in Iraq. Not that's money we have to spare.

My school district just has a 1 million dollar Reading Intervention program for ESL students instead.

In less than 100 years, the expense for the same thing went from 25 cents for a ream of paper to 1 million dollars. Interesting.

I will be shopping during the day and going out to dinner with Dh to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary.

:)

I agree with you about that. We shouldn't be there, our military men and women shouldn't be dying on foreign soil, but that's another topic altogether.

There are many things our government needs to be held accountable for, and the best way to do that is to vote.

Not to offend anybody

But I was going to shop today, but I think I will wait until tomorrow, and by produce, and meat from my corner butcher. (gotta but gas this is the one I wish I could skip) I have some very good frinds that are from away (that is northern new england speak for not from here) We just had a celibration for one lady in her late 60'as that just became a US citizen and she was so proud she cried, I support that 100% but the illegals that come in are breaking the law, they need to follow the rules like everybody else, no matter what the rules are.

I don't work on Mondays usually, but since I have no desire to sit in traffic caused by a march in the city, I'm staying in NH. When DH gets homes, we're going shopping. I honestly have no idea what I'm going to buy....I need shampoo. I need some kind of fuel line thingie for my car and the place is open until 8pm, so I'll go there. Then, I'll walk through the mall and see what's what. Whatever store is closed won't be getting my business again.

I think ICE should take note of the businesses that are closed and investigate them to see if they're employing illegal immigrants. It's a good way to get a heads up on companies who might be doing it.

I just don't understand why people think America should just have open borders. Have you ever checked to see what other countries require of you before they allow you there to work and/or live there? Why should America be any different?

I'd like a better life, too. Who's going to open the doors to their home and let me take what I want? Any offers? No? Well, then, I'm going to stand in front of your door and protest and demand to be let in because whatever you have in there could make my life better and you owe it to me to give it to me. Aw, I know you usually have standards of who you let into your house, but it's for me and my better life, so open the door.
