What are the parents thinking?

A few years ago when I worked as a high school nurse, I had a student come in in pain with puss oozing out of his tongue thanks to the piercing he had. Lovely site! I've also seen belly button rings partially torn out, dozens of infected and scarred ear lobes, etc. Just thought I'd gross everyone out, and point out another reason why a tongue piercing isn't really a harmless choice for acceptable rebellion for an 11 year old child.

Gotta admit that I never knew the sexual connotation to tongue piercings, though. Learned something new on the DIS again. I think I learned about "tramp stamps" here, too. How nice.

It isnt just the young ones getting the belly piercing ripped out. My youngest was about 8 months when I got back into pre pregnancy shape, so I got a belly ring since it was summer and I was very pleased with myself. Hubby loved it until the day I was holding my little guy and I slipped and fell. His foot caught the piercing and ripped it out. UGHHH, I am done now with any thing but earrings lol.

This reminds me, my friend got her tounge pierced - her mom let her, and it was last year in 8th grade.

I asked her at lunch one day why she wasn't eating and she replied it hurt too much. I asked her when she got her tounge pierced and she told me two days before.

Then, she ended up ripping her tounge open, making a larger hole then the piercing was because she was being careless.

Most piercings besides the ears sound like all they do is cause trouble.

No flipping way an 11 year old should be allowed to have a tongue piercing. I find it tasteless just like some of the NY posts in this thread. Have a look around the country, it is everywhere.

My kids can do what they want when they move out. So far they have never asked.

This reminds me of our drive down to Disney. We stopped at a drive through and really couldn't understand a thing the girl was saying. Not a word! Finally we just drove up to the window.

She had just had her tongue pierced and she couldn't get the words out. She was mumbling because she kept hitting her teeth with the ring/stud.

Sexy? nope. Not in that moment.

And as for an 11 year old with one. No way no how. Parents must have been very clueless.

That was painful to read! The pain must've been excruciating!

DD came home the other day "why can't I get my nose pierced like a girl in my class just did?" Um, because I am your mom!!!! These are 11 and 12 yr olds.

couple days later, she comes home saying the friend had to take it out due to infection - turns out her girlfriend did it, not a proffessional! This was fine with the girl's mom!!!

Why would a child get it for that purpose? I think it's more of a rebellious temporary phase...I still dont see anything wrong with it. I think if you are looking at an 11 year old and thinking she got it for that purpose, you are the one with the problems LOL

Are you kidding me? While I am sure that tweens don't get tongue piercings for that purpose, Oral S** is rampant in Middle Schools and most Middle Schools say it is not really S**!

I agree with this 100% . Sometimes I am afraid of what our counties future is.

No way. They are ugly and unsanitary. I am against most piercings other than ears (early grade school if she wants it done-not for boys) and nose (for late teens on up). You can't just grab a chunk of flesh and put a bar or ring through it. I have yet to see a eyebrow ring or lip ring that looked cute. Don't even get me started on other areas of the body. Not everything needs to be pierced.

I can sympathize. When DD was about 7 months old, I had abdominal surgery,and had a line of staples about 5 inches long going down my tummy. DD's foot caught on one of them, and it hurt more than anything. Because of that, I would never get a navel piercing.

Actually a tongue piercing is the piercing most prone to cause REAL problems... Infections are very common (let's see... open sore in the middle of your tongue, which isn't the cleanest environment). Also, the stud rubs against the teeth and wears the enamel right off, causing dental problems.

So, I gotta go with the people who think this child's parents are idiots.

I know several people who had a tongue piercing and they all have teeth problems. They each go to different dentist and they were told the piercing causes decay and root problems for teeth, even if you are an excellent brusher. Having a tongue piercing causes health problems.

I think that is too young for a tongue piercing. But I've seen kids that young getting their navels piereced. I know times are changing but my old fashioned attitudes haven't.

I did have my tongue piereced and have a tattoo but I was in my twenties when I did both. I still have the tattoo and hate it....but that is only because it's a ugly tattoo and I wish I would have gotten something more feminine.

The tongue piercing was on a whim and I hated it. It hurt like heck and my tongue swelled up for two days. Plus I cracked one of my teeth on it so that is another thing to think about.

I'm too much of a wimp to get my tounge pierced at 16, let alone 11! I don't really like piercings anyway, but I really don't care for tounge piercings, I can't imagine how annoying it would be.

I don't see it any differently from another girl wearing 'sexy' or 'cutie' on the butt. It isn't appropriate, especially at that age!

I've seen tongues that have become infected, and its nasty! Hopefully that won't happen to her.

It was, but it was also one of the "cleanest" piercings I've had. It's just cartiledge so it hurts going thru but it heals quickly and cleanly as long as it's taken care of. Mine was fine in about 2 weeks.

Funny how people can pick out what they want and dont want to hear, or read.

I say I have come in contact with people with tongue piercings and I can't understand what they are saying and it becomes, "they can't understand anything people are saying".

The most "COMMON" place I run into people with multiple piercings and tattoos are when they are bagging my groceries or washing my car. Sure, there are exceptions, but that's where I run into these folks the MOST.

I never see a guy with a face like a tamborine sitting behind the desk at my bank.

So sorry I didn't go back and reread or quote your exact words. I was letting you know what my personal experience was in that particular area. Maybe you need to get out more, I have seen many bank tellers, cashiers, servers, even my AAA receptionist with facial piercings. Of course most are tongues, noses or eyebrows but I have seen a lip or two as well.

A couple of years ago it was a news story here in Indy that 2 5th graders had had sex in the classroom, in front of everyone, when the teacher went out of the room, so yes, your kids know what sex is.

I just happened to see a headline today about a 22 year old man that died from an infection from a tongue piercing.

As for being able to take them out, ear piercings can't come out for awhile after piercing so I would imagine tongues take even longer.

Even if the girl is innocent about it, the teenage boys she's about to be surrounded by aren't gonna be, and teenage boys aren't known for their respect, discrection, and caring when it comes to getting what they want.

Tongue piercings heal within 2-3 days of taking them out. DBF decided he didn't want his anymore, took it out on a Saturday and by Monday it was closed enough that he couldn't put the barbell back in.
That's sad about the guy who died.

Yes, I meant that if you didn't want to lose the piercing I didn't think you could just take it out for an even longer time than earrings, when you first get them pierced.

It is sad about the guy that died. I didn't read the article so I don't know specifics.
