What are the Odds?

I have read in previous years that during FD times, Disney sometimes overbooks Value Resorts and have offered a FREE UPGRADE to a Deluxe Resort to some people. But with this year having FD throughout the year plus having other new package deals out that also fall in the same dates as FD..do you think they will yet again overbook the Value Resorts between FD, Kids Stay and Play FREE and the % Discounts? I know its hard to know this..but just wondering what everyones thoughts are on this?

I didn't seem that the number of upgrades given out in 2010 (during Fall free dining) were as numerous as in 2009-well, at least based on what was posted here on the DIS both years.

My thought is that maybe the values didn't get as booked up because it only offered the QSDP for free and some that had booked that in the past, may have chosen to upgrade to a moderate instead.

But, some guests got an upgrade so anything is possible.

Don't ever book a vacation hoping for an upgrade. The odds are so much greater that you will be disappointed. It's almost like buying a car on credit, because Publisher's Clearinghouse told you you might be a millionaire.

Reading these boards, people assume that upgrades happen every day. They don't; they're rare.

Book the vacation you want/can afford, forget about the upgrades, and if you get one, it's icing.

I am wondering if with the new system of the computer assigning the room at the time of booking if perhaps "overbooking" and people getting upgraded will be a thing of the past. :confused3

I would never book hopeing for an upgrade especially if going during a busy time as there would be little chance to change and pay to upgrade at a later date and end up disappointed.

The computer system may help a bit, but it can't prevent overbooking. Every system has to be set up to allow a certain percentage of "bleed" - those people who book and then cancel. But that's looking into the future based on historical trends. A resort or hotel becomes overbooked when that anticipated "bleed" doesn't occur - fewer people cancel than anticipated, and there aren't enough rooms. And this is especially true for a place like Disney, where people book so far in advance. There's only so much a computer system can do about that.

Just as the computer can't calculate the exact bleed that will occur, neither can we. Counting on overbooking and an upgrade is a fool's endeavor.

We were lucky enough to get upgraded from an All Star to the Yacht Club (they even gave us a water view room) in March of 09. I think it helps if you're just going for a few nights. We got a call a day or two before departure asking if we were interested in the upgrade and of course we said YES! They totally knew what they were doing though because we loved the resort so much that we've stayed at the Yacht/Beach club two more times since (going on three)! Good luck...ya never know...
