What are the generic image icons?

Just noticed this:


In the black bar on the right (after "subscribe") what are those for?

on my screen they're social media links. Little gray squares, one for facebook, twitter, youtube, and instagram

Hmm.. something must have changed. I used to see those, but now I've got the broken GIF icon (thanks for the proper term ).

They are hosted on the images.wdwinfo.com domain, which "images" is typically a word used in ad blocking software as a catch-all. I was receiving the broken gifs too but when I whitelisted the url "images.wdwinfo.com" in GlimmerBlocker (the ad blocking software I use) the images showed right back up.
