What are the chances of "critters" (bugs, snakes, lizards etc.)getting into your ground floor room?

I have had frogs, a duck and a turkey in my ground floor golf course facing room.

In the turkey's defense it WAS pouring down rain and there was a lot of lightening,.

no elevators at POFQ

I'm used to CMs passing wrong information but I'm surprised when a Moderator on this site does so! I tend to give more credence to what a Moderator says, especially when one is so sure of their answer. I guess that's not the case.

At the very least, @RustManFan would you consider going back and correcting your reply? You being a Mod and all.

I don't worry about it but I'm from Georgia and live in the country so am pretty used to critters around. I don't think I've ever asked to have my room changed at any hotel much less Disney. My thoughts are it's Florida and it used to be a swamp, as long as a gater doesn't crawl in the room I'm pretty much o.k. I'll admit if I saw a snake in the room there would be some screaming and I wouldn't go back in the room unless someone proved it had been removed.

It's Florida so yes the likelihood of you getting a palmetto bug is moderate at least (all floors are susceptible). They are harmless as are the lizards. The only thing i would worry about are bedbugs.
Bedbugs come in on people's luggage. So check your luggage if you fly.

Exactly this. It's Florida and WDW is smack dab in the middle of a giant swamp and surrounded by nature reserves. There are all kinds of flying, jumping, creeping, crawling and wriggling forms of wildlife all over the property. However 99.9% of them are NOT lurking in the bushes just waiting for Housekeeping to prop the door open while they clean the room.

No wonder I never have a problem getting my request for a ground floor room. My 4 year old grandchild doesn't make this much fuss.

If I found any type of living thing other than a human in our room, I would call the hotel main desk and ask for another room.
If it was a palmetto bug there's no reason other than get someone to remove it if you don't want to. They don't want to be indoors because they want to be around foliage. They have nothing to do with cleanliness and won't be an infestation in the room. It would most likely be one that flew in when the door was open. And yes they fly.

well this thread is making me glad that I asked for an upper room.....
Which brings us to the second quote. That's how we got one in a third floor room so being on an upper floor isn't a guarantee. Anyway, open your outside doors only long enough to go in or out and keep a lookout. In 25 years we've only had 2 occasions and just got rid of them like any bug. Not a big deal.

Im not worried about us holding the door open too long. I would think it would happen when mousekeeping is cleaning the rooms.

Ive had almost a dozen resort stays and the majority of those on the first floor, and never had one bug (palmetto or otherwise), snake or critter in my room. The only critters I had seen were in the actual grass/woods/planters.

I am more worried about getting them in our house. We haven't had any snakes in the house. Thanks goodness. However, there have been rattle snakes in the greenbelt behind our house, maybe in the backyard too. Bugs are to be expected, as long as they aren't huge or fuzzy spiders, I am fine. The scorpions are what we have to worry about, but none of us have been hurt yet, knock on wood. The one that showed up while I was rifling through my son's dirty laundry scared me pretty bad though. It got very close to my hand before I saw it. Luckily, the ones here are pretty small. I think I have better things to worry about than the critters at WDW.

This is my DW if she sees any kind of bug or creature in our room. :scared: :car:

Eh, I like having a bit of wildlife around. Last time we were at Yacht Club had a second floor room and there was a lizard always hanging out on the balcony. And there are lizards all over the place in Epcot. Haven't seen a snake yet but if I did would just pick it up and put it in the bushes. And bugs are just a fact of life in Florida

Partially true - they can also already be in a room and live without feeding for several months so it's always best to check your room as soon as you arrive.

This thread is too funny. BTW, lizards love to crawl up walls and palmetto bugs can fly, just something to think about.

THIS. On a trip to Mexico we had a lizard in our room on the third floor, and i've witnessed (in pure horror) a snake crawl up my house (outside but still nasty) on a smooth wall. So the lesson learned is to still be vigilant for reptiles and insects if you're on an upper floor!

Do ducks count? lol when we stayed on the first floor at the Poly we would open our sliding door and in came the ducks! too cute! all kidding aside, with all of the rain that Florida has had this summer I'd be more inclined to take an upper floor! lots of critters and snakes around...YUCK! I also worry about the mosquitos later on in the summer and fall! lots of spray!

In 2012, we had a ground floor room at the WL. While there was not a snake in our room, there was one curled up right outside a door that led out to the courtyard/pool area. That door was just right around the corner from our room. A CM blocked off the area until they were able to remove it. Needless to say, we left our patio doors shut after that just in case it had any family members in the area!

OK kids. As is traditional every time there is a "critters" thread, somebody has to post the story of the Famous Contemporary Snake. Yes, it is a true story. You can find a link to the original blog here:

Here we go...... if you look closely you can see the snake wrapped around Elias's arm.
The snake was found at 11:45 p.m. We had turned down the air to 50 degrees to smoke him out.
3 foot of black snake. Please zoom in.
Complete story: Scott and Clay were at Epcot. Most of the time during this trip Clay and Scott were at Epcot. So no big news there. Amy and I decided to wake the girls up from their afternoon nap and go over to Downtown Disney. They were sleeping in OUR hotel room. Woke them up and Bethany did not feel well. She threw up and decided she felt ok so we went down to the bus. Get on the bus with about 20 other people and Bethany throws up everywhere. Bless her, we all evacuated and she was sick again all over the bus stop. Poor thing. She was terrible. Amy and I decided there was not a lot I could do to help her so LG and I went ahead to DD. Scott and Clay did not even know what was going on back at the homefront. While LG and I were at DD, Amy continued to text that B. was still sick and housekeeping was coming every once in awhile with new sheets, towels, etc.
Next, I receive a text from Amy: NEED YOU TO COME BACK TO HOTEL ASAP
ME: sure, R U OK?
AMY: SNAKE N ROOM
ME: WHAT?
AMY: bethany in hallway with trashcan. manager coming. some guy from wv helping.

of course, LG and I scoot back as soon as we could. The snake was in the room and had slithered away. There were SEVERAL people in the room looking for it. However, when they were on the hunt, they found a NEST!!!! WITH EGGS IN IT!!!!!

Finally, the Gledhills were moved to an absolute Rock STar Celebrity Suite!!!! Super duper cool. Elias found the snake around 11:45. We all ran in minus Clay, LG and of course, Bethany. Elias was the hero of the night.
