I'm trying to find out what advantages there are for buying DISNEY GIFT CARDS. How much savings, discounts, where to buy them, etc. Thanks for your help

At target you can get a 5% discount if you have a target redcard or target debit card. They also give 5% discounts if you use there pharmacy. It can be a good way to budget along the way and buy the gift cards when you have extra cash. If you are staying on site you can charge stuff to your room and then go to the front desk and pay your balance off with gift cards before it is charged to your credit card. Some people buy them at stores that give you fuel points so you can save on fuel.

Target gives you a 5% discount off of the face value of the Disney GCs when you use your Target REDCard or debit card. You can stack a Target Pharmacy Discount coupon (another 5% discount) on top of the Target card discount to get 9.75% total off the face value of the card.

If you absolutely know for sure that you will be spending that money with Disney (I have DVC dues to pay every year), then it's a great way to grab yourself a decent discount.

Other than earning free GCs via rewards websites, this is the biggest discount you can get on the gift cards. There are other discounts on tickets, rooms, packages, etc.
  • Some of them are dependent on who you know (Military family member? Cast member friends? A convention at Disney that you could attend?)
  • Others rely on you spending money to save money (purchasing DVC, an AP or Tables in Wonderland card), where the perks include discounts on merchandise, food and rooms.
  • And then there are the discounts available to the general public, which are simply a matter of keeping your eyes open and jumping on the deal as soon as your plans are certain.

I purchase Disney gift cards for our upcoming trips. I purchase them with my Disney Visa, so I get cash back there. I purchase them at Safeway. Each $50 gift card I buy gets me .10 off per gallon.

It's not much but savings is savings...

Basically it is a 5% discount if you buy Disney gift cards at target with a red card (debit or credit) there is a additional discount if you use the 5% pharmacy coupon stacked onto the 5% red card discount.

There are a few threads about this on the budget board.

I purchased Disney gift cards at Target last Christmas season when they were offering a $10 Target gift card with a $50 purchase. I also used my Target Red Card so I saved 5% on each purchase as well. I was able to turn right around and use the $10 gift card toward the next $50 Disney gift card purchase and also get 5% off with my Target Red Card, essentially paying about $38 for each $50 Disney gift card. I'm hoping they offer a similar deal this holiday season. :thumbsup2

Did they run that sale in late November or closer to Christmas?

It started in early December and ran for 2 (maybe 3?) consecutive weekends. I heard about it here and on slickdeals.net.

BJ's also sells them at a discounted rate - I think $95.99 for a $100 GC, and I believe Sam's does as well, if you or friend/family are a member at either of those. One of the sites I use to earn $$ for our trips does not offer Disney GC, so I get Paypal and then can buy discounted GC to make the $$ go a little further. I will put them, as well as Disney Visa Rewards towards OOP meals, PL reservation, souvineers, tips, etc. Every little bit helps me get back to WDW as often as possible!

I bought $500 gift cards when my local grocery store Fry's (Kroger) has the 4 times fuel points. I get 2000 fuel points for each one and save $1 per gallon (35 gal max) twice. So basically, I save $70 for each $500 gift card. (14% savings). For me, this seems easier and a better deal than the 5% Target deal since I can get 1 $500 card instead of numerous $50 cards. Much easier to manage for me.

I'm hoping the run the same deal this year as well. My parents and brother's family are going to Disney in April and everyone(parents, nephews) is getting Disney GCs from me for Xmas.

If you spent $100 would you get 2 $10 GCs?

If you separate the transactions and have 2 coupons, yes
