Almost anything by Mariah Carey.

There was a time when that was true, but it ended sometime in the late 90s.

That is true. She isn't my favorite artist, but in her hands that mezzo soprano is a killer - just about everything she does has a big high end crescendo to show that off, and it always falls right before going into the refrain (which is her sneaky little contrarian trick - most pop songs are written with that peak in the middle or end of the refrain!)
