Hi Everyone,, I had a few general questions I was wondering if you could help with-we're renting points, moved the trip from Aug until the end of Oct. I know I can check with the girl I'm renting with, but was hoping some of you Disers will help me out-She said most of her points expire at the end of Nov. Now I don't have her use year, or really other information, but my questions were-first, if we feel mid Sept that Oct we still couldn't go (we live in NY), do you think our only option at that point was try to reschedule 1 more time until Nov? Do we have to let her know 30 days in advance if we do want to push the reservation out to Nov? I've heard talk about points going into holding, what is that? So basically, if the points do expire at the end of our Nov, what would be our options?
Thank you!
If her points expire end of November, she probably has a December UY. Assuming those points are from her December 2019 UY, that means she must bank those points by July 31 of this year if she's not going to use them by Nov. 30. So if you wait until mid-Sept. to decide to change your dates, the last night of your stay would have to be Nov. 30 or earlier, or else she'll lose them. If those points are banked from her 2018 Dec. UY to 2019, she can't bank them any further and will lose them if they're not used by Nov. 30.
Holding comes into play when a reservation is cancelled or changed 30 days or less before check-in. When points go into holding, they expire at the end of that UY (so Nov. 30 of this year again) and can be used only to book a new reservation that checks in 60 days or less from the date the new reservation is made.
At this time DVC is not enforcing the holding rules - but we don't know how long that pause in the rules will last, and by Sept. it may only be a memory!
So, yes, if you wait until Sept. to let her know, you need to let her know at least 31 days before your Oct. checkin date, and you'll have to rebook for Nov. (last night of your stay could be Nov. 30 at the latest) - and hope there's still availability. Otherwise she'll lose those points.
If you're really uncertain, the kindest thing to do would be to find out from her whether these are 2019 December UY points that could be banked, and then make a decision before July 31 as to whether you're going or not. As of August 1 and later, you're looking at whether to rebook to Nov. or keep Oct., otherwise her points are gone.
I know that's confusing and complicated - please ask if you need further clarification!
