What are my options with renting points that expire in Nov?

Hi Everyone,, I had a few general questions I was wondering if you could help with-we're renting points, moved the trip from Aug until the end of Oct. I know I can check with the girl I'm renting with, but was hoping some of you Disers will help me out-She said most of her points expire at the end of Nov. Now I don't have her use year, or really other information, but my questions were-first, if we feel mid Sept that Oct we still couldn't go (we live in NY), do you think our only option at that point was try to reschedule 1 more time until Nov? Do we have to let her know 30 days in advance if we do want to push the reservation out to Nov? I've heard talk about points going into holding, what is that? So basically, if the points do expire at the end of our Nov, what would be our options?
Thank you!

If her points expire end of November, she probably has a December UY. Assuming those points are from her December 2019 UY, that means she must bank those points by July 31 of this year if she's not going to use them by Nov. 30. So if you wait until mid-Sept. to decide to change your dates, the last night of your stay would have to be Nov. 30 or earlier, or else she'll lose them. If those points are banked from her 2018 Dec. UY to 2019, she can't bank them any further and will lose them if they're not used by Nov. 30.

Holding comes into play when a reservation is cancelled or changed 30 days or less before check-in. When points go into holding, they expire at the end of that UY (so Nov. 30 of this year again) and can be used only to book a new reservation that checks in 60 days or less from the date the new reservation is made. At this time DVC is not enforcing the holding rules - but we don't know how long that pause in the rules will last, and by Sept. it may only be a memory!

So, yes, if you wait until Sept. to let her know, you need to let her know at least 31 days before your Oct. checkin date, and you'll have to rebook for Nov. (last night of your stay could be Nov. 30 at the latest) - and hope there's still availability. Otherwise she'll lose those points.

If you're really uncertain, the kindest thing to do would be to find out from her whether these are 2019 December UY points that could be banked, and then make a decision before July 31 as to whether you're going or not. As of August 1 and later, you're looking at whether to rebook to Nov. or keep Oct., otherwise her points are gone.

I know that's confusing and complicated - please ask if you need further clarification!

Thank you so much, you explained it perfectly! Really appreciate the time you took to explain it, I think I get it now! I think we're going to hold off and I'll mark my calendar for 31 days prior to our check in. We'll have to make the decision then if we think Oct would be ok, or it there is too uncertainty we'll push out to Nov, if there is anything available. I wish we could just take those points, and say, just book us for next summer, but I know that's not how it works! Thanks again!!

You might want to mark your calendar for 32 to 35 days prior to your check in, just to allow time for you to notify your owner and for her to make any desired changes. Actually, that might not really matter, since it sounds like mid-September might already be within or very close to the 60 day period for booking with holding points that have to be used prior to November 30.

I dont know what type of room or resort you are renting, but trying to move it to November in September may be very difficult.

Things are already pretty full and while things change daily, it might be difficult so keep that in mind,

I would also double check with the owner now to be sure she is even willing to move it a second time. Not all owners will.

If you think you might hold off then just change it now to give yourself an actual option. If you wait until September there is a good chance you won't get anything.

Right now you could give the ask to have them move the room if at all possible to November and they can check possibly a couple times over the next week.

I can't give availability (against board rules) but will just say right now if you don't want to be hopping around to 2/3/4 resorts over the course of a week you are going to be at SSR in November likely. If you book now possibly you can get a split stay at two places you would prefer (as I doubt that its SSR).

ok thanks everyone. All very good points, we would be fine at SSR, and realize it's a busy time of year. I think at this point, we're not too picky where we stay, lol! Thanks again!

If those points are 2019 points that need to be banked or used by Nov 30, as an owner, one could bank those points by July 31 and use them next summer. However for the owner that could be a gamble too. We may be losing 36 points due to cancelling a Nov trip that used banked, current and borrowed points. Right now our DD has a trip in Oct planned , so she may use those 36 points.

But I would try to contact owner and see what they might be able to do. If they do move the trip and you can't take the trip, you may want to be prepared to lose the cost of those points.
