What apps are a must for the droid?

If the open beta is still available, try getting the Swype keyboard. It's getting installed natively on some of the latest phones. It allows virtual keyboard input a lot faster by sliding your finger around the keyboard. I have it on my regular Droid which I got because of the physical keyboard, but for most purposes I now use Swype.

I have one of the Flashlight apps that turns on the display as a total white display (and there are color and pattern options - I can make it a strobe light if I want to go disco :) ) which came in really useful after Toy Story 3 when DD#2 couldn't find something she dropped.

Car Finder is always useful for finding your car in the MK parking lot, or back at your home airport after a long trip to WDW :)

Galaxy Domination is a neat little real-time strategy game that exists simply to kill time and batteries.

I've got a Bubble Level app so I can keep things level :)

The aforementioned Google Sky Map and Shazam are cool.

Layar looks cool, but haven't really used it. It uses the camera and gives you a heads-up data overlay to show you where businesses are located.

K-9 Mail is a much-improved email app based on the native one, but it actually works when using it against a POP/IMAP mail server that has certain spam protection features enabled.

Google Translate supports voice input in several languages, for when you REALLY need the bathroom... :)

Virtual Vuvuzela for annoying the non-soccer fans during the World Cup - guess I can delete that one now though...

And did you know that most Android phones can work as a metal detector?

I use most of the above.....all good apps.

However, the one I'm really looking forward to is the new Live365 app due out this fall. Then I'll have 24/7 access to all my favorite Disney music stations!!!

A little off topic, but was wondering if anyone knows if you can use the 3G network to access internet when on airplane?

No, you can't. But many planes are now equipped with WiFi (for a fee). Rumors are that WiFi on planes will probably be free by late next year.

I had a new samsung droid for a week. worst phone I have ever used. Dropped calls like crazy, apps running constantly even after using the app killer to turn them off they would be back on in 5 minutes, using the gps it wore out a fully charged battery in less than an hour. It was horrible.

What phones have people found success with. My first taste of droid was horrible but willing to try again if I can be convinced that they can actually deliver. Any help would be great. US Cellular user here if that makes a difference.

It normally holds true that most motorola phones have AWSOME RF capablities. I loved my old RAZR and am enjoying more signal with my motorola droid than with my blackberry curve.

My wife had the Samsung instinct and it was a big pile o junk. I love my HTC incredible.

Looking at the US Cellular web site, I see the only Android phone they carry is Samsung. Too bad. The best Android phone out there right now (IMHO) is the HTC Incredible. Motorola (expecially with the Droid X) comes a close second.

I must cause the curse on phones. RAZR was the second worst phone I have ever had. Maybe it was just not working on my provider. The battery never lasted 8 hours and when it went through the washing machine I did a happy dance and got a different phone.

the one thing I do like about my Blackberry is the fact that it shows my multiple e-mail addresses for work, family, etc. (I have 8 of them) under the one "messages" application. Then, when I go to reply to each message, it automatically sends from the correct e-mail address, with an appropriate signature.

Any thoughts on what comes with the Droid X, and if there are any better applications that we should search for in this arena?

TIA for your help.:thumbsup2

try Droid lite live...I am listening to mouseworld radio right now...

"WDW monorail- TTC to Epcot (2002)" is playing at this moment.

I found another app that I really like. It's Picsay and I am loading up my FB with all kinds of neat pics now. Pics can also be loaded to Photobucket too.

which is really good. How do I shut down the mail server that comes with the Droid?

Also, now that I have facebook and twitter installed, how do I shut down the Motorola social network widget?

TIA for any responses! :thumbsup2

Set it to never update you mailbox, exit and then kill the app (using Advanced Task Killer which you have of course installed :) ) - it should never run again.

I like radiotime. You can get local radio stations and don't need to use headphones like you do with the radio app for droid incredible.

I am getting all my mail, but also getting K9 error messages about "Push error" and "socket is not connected".

Do you know of a reliable site for the less technically-inclined to solve issues like these? TIA for any help.

The official site is here:

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/

although it can be pretty technical. Those errors tell me more that it is having trouble talking to your mail server though.

Your mileage may vary, but here are some of my relevant settings I could find:

Folder poll check frequency: 30 minutes (I manually poll if I need to)
Folders to check with poll: Only 1st Class
Folders to check with push: Only 1st Class

I don't see any settings that would tend to matter other than those specific to your server.
