My friend and I just got back in Sept from DL, and flew NW, and for me being 6' tall, the legroom was practically non existant, luckily I was sitting in an aisle seat, I had to extend one leg into the aisle at times! I was wondering what airline that flies out of DTW has the best legroom? So far, I've found Southwest to have great legroom, but I'd love to try other airlines, as long as the fare isn't too high.

Any opinions out there?

I think it varies more by the model of the plane rather than the airline itself. I know on USAir the 737's are really cramped, the airbus is better.

I am a loyal Skyteam flyer and fly out of DTW all the time. I agree with DebbieB and WDWshopper. It depends on the type of aircraft and the carrier. www.seatguru.com in which wdwsnopper stated is a great webiste to check on the dimensions of the seats, legroom, and seat recline. SInce 65% of the flights out of DTW are NWA, its hard to get another airline out of there. BUt if you can get a continental or United flight, those would be the best. NWA has one of the oldest fleets flying in america 2 day. United is one of the best for legroom and Continental has some of the newest aircraft. I just flew continental to WDW (MCO) a few days ago on continental and coach was very comfortable and the aircraft was clean and new.

There are three airlines that have direct flights DTW MCO: AirTran, Spirit, and Northwest. I'd start there. Get a few different flights and check the specific equipment to see what the seat pitch is on seatguru.

If you are flying in winter, and find you have to connect for price reasons, avoid connecting through ORD---it's runway layout makes snow operations difficult. Most of the other Northern candidates (CLE, EWR, MSP) handle snow reasonably well.

Since American removed it's extra legroom, United Economy Plus has the best pitch/legroom in general outside of Business or First Class.

HOWEVER please note that United has really started to enforce this section for their frequent fliers only; they will allow non FF to move up to Economy Plus at checkin, at the gate, or on the flight for an average of $29-45.

The flight attendants and gate agents have been really diligent about enforcing this in the last month, even if the Economy Plus section is almost empty.

(And that's why United continues to keep me as a very loyal, very frequent flier!)

When did airtran start flying out of DTW? Has anyone flown them and how was it. We normally do Spirit, but will do NW is the price is better (it happens sometimes.) However I would like to give Airtran a try if their price is right too.

I agree it really depends on the airplane more then airline for seat room.

AirTran just started flying out of DTW in November...they took over the old Delta gates in the Smith terminal because Delta moved to the new McNamara terminal
