I think 12 has been our cut-off. I have always set the budget and included my kids in the planning. In fact, it helps them understand better why we can't have the moonwalk, the ponies AND the rock band
Seriously, I give them a budget of $100. Out of that comes the cake, the favors, the entertainment and the gifts. I have one kid who is a party planner SUPREME. He can erally plan a shindig--but at a price! So the budget really reined him in. One year he elected to forgo the store-bought cake, the movie tickets for 6 friends, the Dominos pizza, and decided on a sleep-over with
all-night videos, homemade cake & ice cream sundaes. We allowed him to keep the extra, which he put toward a much wanted Gameboy.
DD, on the other hand, is all about the party. Give her $100, she'll spend every dime on her friends at a BuildA Bear party.
This year she elected to take her best friend camping with us. We took their bikes and gave them free rein of the mountain(they had walkie-talkies and we know this area very well.) She had so much fun, we didn't even see her for the rest of the day.
