What age do kids stop wearing light up shoes?

My DS is going into second grade and has fallen in love with a pair of shoes from sketches that light up like police cars. My DH swears that he is to old for them and says kids in second grade don't wear light up shoes. He's worried that he will get made fun of. I have to admit I've not paid to much attention to the kids feet when I am at school! Any advice?

I'm with your DH. My 5 y/o wants those shoes but I think he is a little old for them. My husband never liked the light-ups but he wore a couple of pairs over the years. If they weren't so expensive I'd buy them for kickarounds but not school. Watch for them to go onsale.

I don't think have a problem with a second grader wearing light-ups, but not like a police car. That screams toddler to me.

I also agree with your husband. My DD is 5, going into kindergarten and already hasn't worn light up shoes for about a year now.

unfortunately kids grow up quicker nowadays. I don't agree with it but you don't want you son being made fun of either.

on the safe side. You could keep an eye on the shoes in the store, wait until school starts. Ask your son if others where light up shoes, and what he thinks about it. If he says no one where them, then maybe skip them. If however others wear them with no teasing, then make the purchase then.

If they are on sale now, find out what the return policy is. Can you go without your son wearing them until school starts. Then after you find out what the other kids think, then let him wear them. else return if they haven't been worn.

Do they make them in his size? I thought most Sketchers that light up were only made in small sizes. The last time I tried to buy some for my ds4 we were told they didn't make them that big . He wears an 11 I think.

Otherwise I would say he is probably too old. I teach first grade, and they would be pushing it with my students, but could probably fly depending on the confidence level of the kid.

My DS is 8 and he wore light up sketchers last year. He loved them! There is nothing wrong with them in second grade.

My great nephew said light up skechers are cool. He's going into 3rd grade.

My DGS wore them until he was 7. He now wears his Heelys...everywhere!

My 8 year old loves them, but won't buy them because he doesn't want to wear them. (If that makes sense.) If he did not KNOW that kids would make fun of them, he would like to wear them. I hope that makes sense.

He is going into 3rd grade and will start the year with a pair of Nike tennis shoes and a pair of Vans.

I was surprised at how large the light up shoes went. I think that I could probably buy a pair for myself!

I really hate for kids to get overly into trends, fashions, etc... especially when it is imposed by adults. In this instance though, I would just tell him that those shoes are the kind that most younger kids wear.

I saw them also and though ds would like them. He is going into 2nd grade also. dh wouldnt agree with me since- they light up and 2nd they are velcro... That is a big negative with dh at ds's age of almost 8. so I ended up buying him some shoelace tie addidias type of skateboard sneaks.. ds likes them so its a win win..

I saw those shoes when we took Jonah shoe shopping on Friday. They do NOT look like a baby, or a toddler. Jonah is in 1st grade and he's 7. They weren't cartoonish or anything. Buy the kid the shoes he wants if they are within your budget. Jonah wanted the other ones that light up, but he gets distracted by the lights and watches his feet when he walks, resulting in tripping or running into things so I can't buy that kind for him. If it wasn't for that I would have.

They make them up to a boys 3 or 4.

my son hasnt wore them since he was 4.. i wouldnt dare send him to school wearing them.. they scream toddler. and they are a distraction.

i have never let him wear character shoes.. i have always found them annoying.

My 7 year old, going into the 2nd grade, has a pair of light up Skechers, but they are made like skate shoes. The police car ones do look like they are for younger kids. I would probably find something else just to be safe.

talk about letting peer pressure get to your kids...

if the kid likes them, then let them wear them. why do you worry or allow your kid to worry about what other's are wearing??

I wanted to wear filas in middle school, and didn't get my first pair till like 8th grade, that was my first name brand shoes. I didn't get name brand clothes till 10th grade.

and he thought twice about light up shoes for school. My older ds, who will be 7 next month, will only wear Sketchers b/c they are the "cool" shoes. Thankfully we have an outlet nearby.

I think Sketchers are all the rage so even light up ones may be cool. But my almost 7yo and 5 1/2 yo won't wear them if they light up.

I would buy them if my going into third grader wanted them. I hate to see children falling to peer pressure in second grade. I taught my children from a young age to treat their bodies with respect and wear what they like. That being said, I tried to buy my son who is going into middle school Aeropostale and he took one look and said "I don't want to be a clone like everyone else, I'll pass on Aeropostale!".

My son was in 3rd grade and had that same pair of shoes. He is much smaller than most in his class so he still fits into those kind of shoes. They were made by sketchers too! His classmates loved the shoes and all wished they had them.

When I read this post this am I asked my ds8 (going into 3rd grade) if he would wear light-up shoes. He said "absolutely not, those are for babies". He loved them when he was little but I think the last pair he was in 1st grade and he tore them up trying to get the battery out so they wouldn't light up. I asked him if anyone had light up shoes last year and he said no. If your son wants them and he doesn't care that he might get made fun of, buy him the shoes. I got my kids both Stride Rite shoes for $14.99 and $19.99 yesterday.
