We have been considering it for DDs 9 & 10, but I think we are going to put it off another year.

My DD will be 18 when she gets hers for graduation. I bought it last week!

Do you mean one of their own or one for them to use. We got our first "home" laptop last summer. DS17 will get his own when he goes off to college next fall. Until then none of our kids will get their "own" computer.

DD14 has one. It's a hand me down. I won't be buying her a new one any time soon.

My BIL gets a new laptop every year, so he gave dd13 his old one for her birthday. Maybe he'll hand one down to me - I've never had one!

My dds got theirs when they entered freshman year of high school, because their high school requires every student to buy a laptop! (not a public school) When they graduated high school they got a new laptop for college. Youngest dd (not in high school yet) now has two hand me down laptops!

DS, 18, got his for HS graduation this past May (to be used in college), and DD, 14, will get hers when she graduates. Makes a nice gift.

We have a family desktop and laptop also that DD can use as needed.

I'm just one to make mine wait for some things or either there is nothing left to give them when they are older and can appreciate it more.

We bought a desktop in '01 (still doing great today) that is for the kids' use. DW and I each have our own laptops. We bought DD20 her own laptop when she went away to college last year. DS18 will continue to use the family desktop until he goes away to college, then we'll buy him a laptop.

Gave it to DD for her 11th bday last year, when I got sick of sharing my computer! She has to do a lot of online research for school, plus loves to video chat with her summer camp friends. Prime time to do both of these is also when I want to be online or working at my desktop.

We have set rules about when/where she can use it, but she's been very responsible so far.

My sister and I both got laptops as our high school graduation gift (in 2005 and 2008). Prior to that we shared the family desktop

We didn't. My DD's bought their own. The oldest bought one right before she transferred to ISU after community college and the second one bought one about a year ago, shortly after she started at community college.

We've have a desk top that they were able to use without fighting over it.

IMO- sharing the family computer was fine..

No one in our house of 7 has their own laptop. (my DH's work laptop doesn't count). We have one desktop that we use as a family. My DS 18 will get a laptop when he starts college in the fall.

Well we just ordered an inexpensive laptop for our kids for xmas this year, ages 10 & 8. We plan setting up a lot of parental controls on it and only let them go to certain websites, like Disney and such.

My parents just bought my DD12 her own laptop, but she actually has special circumstances for getting it. She is having scoliosis correction surgery on the 14th, so they got her one to keep up with friends and family while she's recovering, and of course, to help with homework. She's the only grandchild on my side of the family, so my parents spoiled her, and really loaded it up! I think it's better than mine! It's a Dell, and they even let her pick her own custom cover. She got the OPI Teal the Cows Come Home cover, which looks like someone spilled a whole bottle of blue nail polish on her laptop. Really cool!

DD16 got hers for her 16th bday. Its a netbook. She uses it for school allthe time and I'm glad we got it , because she is going to start taking classes at a local college next semester (youth options program) and will really need it then.

My younger 2 kids use my laptop (full size). But they just play games mostly..no need for them to have their own.

I ordered one for my DD 10 for Christmas this year. She has a lot of school work that needs to be done on the computer, and I'm tired of sharing my laptop. I don't have a desktop anymore.

DD14 will be getting one for Christmas this year. DH made a deal with her that if she saved $300 we would pay for the rest. She is almost there and will be getting some $ for Christmas from grandparents so he went out last weekend and bought one for her. She doesn't know yet and we will have it under the tree.

I bought my DD8 a laptop for her b-day, it was a Dell mini 7 and she loved it! It was great because I could be on my laptop without her pestering me for hours to use mine. My DD6 got the desktop to her self but she was never big on computer use like DD8, so it was fine for her. Unfortunately my house was burglarized and both of our laptops were stolen so it'll be awhile before she gets her own laptop again.
