So I just got the news that I should have known was coming -- my kids' school is closed tomorrow, making it a full week, due to the snowstorm in Atlanta.* With the holiday on Monday, that's a full 10 days we could have been at Disney! :sad2: And the worst part is, now we may have to make up the days at the end of the school year, when I have a reservation at VGC at Disneyland!! :scared1:

*Definition of snowstorm in Atlanta: snowfall of any quantity. We got four inches that ended Monday morning, but we are housebound until it melts since we have no equipment to plow it.

Sounds like it's time for Atlanta to invest in some plows and chemicals for the roads. With the climate changes global warming is causing, the prediction is that this is only the start of what is supposed to be a major climate change for the southeast and eastern seaboard. I'm sitting here with a total snowfall this winter already of over 50 inches with much of it still on the ground. It has snowed every day this month with the exception of yesterday. We leave Thursday to drive down to Disney World. I just hope we don't have ice or snow issues in places like Atlanta that have no means of dealing with it.

Hopefully we will have warmer weather the end of January in Orlando than we did the first week of December!

You shouldn't have any trouble next week. I think it's supposed to rain on Saturday, and that should melt the snow and ice. Have great trip!

That really does stink. It is too bad Mother Nature does not realize that she needs to let DVC members know when she plans to do this!:rotfl:

Of course, it is so funny to read about how 4 inches of snow has shut you down for a week. We got over 6 inches overnight on Tuesday, and it didn't even warrant a delay into school!!!

Our one snow day so far came when we got hit with 15 inches of snow--of course, it was cleared in time for school the next day.

I do hope that you don't have to make up those days and miss your other trip.

We're in Cobb County, and they are only talking about having the kids make up a day on a teacher workday that is scheduled for March. I feel your pain though, we are leaving for Disney right when school gets out in May, and I don't want any extra school days ruining our trip! We just need to hope for no more snow between now and May for Atlanta.

Our wasted Disney week also involved Atlanta snow. We had to cancel our reservations for this week and MLK because of the travel woes DD and her hubby had trying to get out of Atlanta! =(

I feel your pain... truly!

I live about 30 miles north of Sandisw...in Fulton NY. Both Fulton and Syracuse NY are known to be the 2 cities in the USA with the most snow fall. There are so many times when i'd tell my wife that "we could have gone sooner...".
And wouldn't it be nice if global warming would shift to the effect that we northerners may just get a bit warmer weather up here in the winter???? I know it's wishful thinking...we'll probably get it even worse. I tend to watch the weather that Diane would get in MN, and double what they get as far as snow fall... and that thought has worked quite a few times.... They get the bitter cold, we get increased snow.
In either event, hope all works out for your trip to Disneyland! :thumbsup2

I grew up in Chicago, so I do realize how pathetic it sounds. But it truly is treacherous here with no snow removal -- it gives me new appreciation for why it's needed even for small amounts.

I hope they do the same here in Dekalb. We have a teacher workday (formerly a furlough day) scheduled the Friday before Presidents Day. I would feel sorry for the people scheduled for trips then, though.

My pain is nothing compared to yours! I am so sorry for you. If it helps, though, you should know that it truly was treacherous here, and they did cancel many hundreds of flights each day.

Thanks, everybody, for the sympathy!

I'm a couple hrs north of atl we got 8 inches on sun night mon morn we didnt even see a snow plow on our street until wed night The main roads arent bad I could have made it into work wed but my daycare has been closed all week too so I've had to use all my vac days for snow. Should have booked a studio on dvc points and left sun We normally dont see snow like this so it's not cost effective to have equipment for a once in a couple if five yrs occurrence My daycare parking lot was still iced over yesterday but would not have made sense to open for today would have cost more in salary and expenses than what they would have been pd

"Global Warming" ? :rotfl2:

Don't worry, there isn't a time in the history of the earth (as far as we can ascertain) when the climate wasn't changing one way or another. Please enjoy the current "temporary cooling period". :thumbsup2

You're right . . .it is now referred to Climate Change. Global Warming is out, especially since the headquarters was closed due to ice in Atlanta.

I am on these boards today because of the Atlanta snow too. I live in Gwinnett County and have already read that all three of the built in "make up" days are going to be school days. This includes the President's Day Monday holiday!

Of course, we have reservations for that weekend! And it is the end of our point year, so I assume if we don't use our reservation, we are going to lose the ones banked from last year, and have restrictions on those we could have banked this year. I got on the boards to see how to go about renting our reservation, and learned about the 50 posts rule.

I can sure understand why they have the rule, since most of us point into DVC to enable us to have more vacation options not to make money, but sure wish I could figure out someway to either use or rent our reservation!

Such a bummer,

Cathy

Let's rewind my video:

Supposed to go to Paris last may, had a connecting flight through.... you guess it ICELAND. Volcano eruption took care of that little jaunt. Rescheduled for this May. I now have a layover in Spain and praying there are no issues.

Went to Las Vegas over the new Years holiday... Coldest weather in the last 85 years. It was actually warmer in NYC then it was in Vegas.

And day after Christmas snow storm closed Philly and NYC area airports for 2 days.

Here in NC, they canceled school on Monday before any snow flakes fell in anticipation of the "big storm" that was coming. It didn't begin snowing until mid to late afternoon, and then it was only a dusting until 6 or 7 pm. They canceled school for Tues. due to the 1-2 inches with an icy mix that was forecasted and did fall. Despite major roads being clear on Wed. and Thurs, the public schools were again canceled. I grew up in Chicago and only had snow days when we had blizzard conditions! I had to stop laughing on Wed. when my driveway, which has a steep incline, was so frozen over that I couldn't get my mini van up the slope and had to wait until the afternoon to get out! I was productive during my idle time and booked some dining reservations for our March trip.

I live in MA and it snowed literally all day Wed. Started sometime Tuesday night or early in the morning ground was covered early Wed. so I stayed home from work (as did most people in the area).

It didn't stop snowing until well after my husband and I went to bed. All the towns around here are used to it though so everyone could still go to work and school on Thursday.

Now I'm worried about tomorrow. We are supposed to fly out at 3 PM and snow showers are supposed to start at noon. I have no idea how much snow it takes to mess up flights as it is the first time I have flown in winter...

Sorry, mother nature said, and all i can think of is that old margarine commercial :happytv:

maburke,

Totally feel ya with the Atlanta snow/ice. I'm on the southside of town and My new job decided to close almost all week also. Right where we live, we mainly had ice and not much snow. My boys did have to return to school on thursday while the county schools were closed. One thing that i keep reminding my friends on facebook and such is that at least we didn't have widespread power outages with all of the ice. I was a small child in the 70s here and remember the huge ice storm then. not fun at all. the dis and planning a trip for early June is what helped keep my sanity. my DH also owns a wrecker service that services the southside of town mainly and we told our dispatch not to accept any calls unless it was Police/emergency calls cause the streets were so bad on monday and tuesday. Hopefully, it won't create problems for your june trip.

I feel for you. Are you a native Georgian? If so, you're used to the shutdowns when the snow flies. If you're originally from the snow belt--I bet you get frustrated, I would.

We experienced something like this last February. We had a one-week cruise booked and the blizzard hit exactly one week before our departure. Our schools were closed down for the entire week (necessarily so since there were downed trees and power lines all over the place).

But then as school was going to start back up, off we go for a full week of vacation. The kids loved it but I felt guilty. My neighbors lucked out, they had a ski trip planned for the week and left just as the snow was hitting. Their kids had a week off and didn't miss any school.
