So I was watching Encore & Rosemary's Baby came on. I was like "cool, I've heard this is a good thriller movie." I was pumped, primed & ready to go!

Mia Farrow has a devil baby...the end.

I'm so glad I didn't waste the cash to rent it at Blockbuster, but there's a couple hours of my life I'll never have back.

The book was better :)

Denise < --- shudders when she thinks of hours wasted watching bad movies. Shudders MORE when she thinks of silly movies she watches over and over and over...... ;)

If I were the author, I'd probably sue to have the title changed, fearing that people that saw the film will have no desire to read the book.

That was a very scary movie in its time. I can imagine it would not translate into today's scary movies very well. The Exorcist is the same way, what once was scary is now kind of funny.

The thing is the movie database has it listed as over a 7 (out of ten). I'll check to see Leonard Maltin's take on it.

LOL, it scared me. But I think I was 10. :teeth:

Don't get me wrong, I love classic films. I love Frankenstein & think Psycho is about as good as it gets, as well as suspenseful flicks like Rear Window.

To be fair I'm not into possession movies (especially since I don't believe in it, which I assume is a needed element to add to the fear?), so I'd probably dislike The Excorcist as well. However, it wasn't even the concept so much as the delivery. The climatic moment of terror is a bunch of people saying "woo-hoo, Satan Jr., yippee" & Mia Farrow sees lizard eyes.

Now if the lil' bugger started biting people or choking the twits or torched the place it might have been cool or even if Mia acted like she was gonna be all motherly to the creature & instead smothered it or snapped the mini-devil's neck. Or even if she did something awful like that & it turned out she had been halucinating or had dreamt it while she was sleep-walking & then had to locked up in a looney bin because she tweaked a crainal circuit when she realized what she had done.

LOL, no there are good, classic scary movies and then there are the others. Rosemary's Baby, isn't a good one.
I don't know much about the more recent ones. I haven't really seen any that wasn't just plain gory. Those kind don't impress me. I want a little more effort taken in the writing.

The Sixth Sense was pretty good. Also the original Halloween really isn't all that bloody, especially considering it's technically considered in the slasher genre. Final Destination wasn't too bad gore-wise (save one scene).

I've also heard that The Ring isn't real gory & it's really scary - I hope it's true. They said the same thing about Blair Witch & that was a major stinking poop-fest.

Well thank you. Since you seem to know what you are talking about with these movies, I'll take your recommendations. :teeth:

Hey, I'm not defending the movie...but via the book, I found it chilling that Mia "motherly accepted" this imp, allowing my overactive imagination to wonder the RESULTS of this unconditional love....

Denise < --- wholly agrees with your Blair Witch opinion ("Just kill off these annoying people! ;) )

I guess. I just think the other scenarios I laid would have been much more interesting &/or scary.

I know some people don't like the movie version of the Shining since it doesn't accurately capture the spirit of the film (ie: Jack is a jerk instead of an ultamately sympathetic character).

I feel the same way about Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's lot closer to the book's plot than Dracula with Bela Legosi (which is the superior film IMO), but loses the spirit of the book. I think the original Dracula is the only vampire movie I've really liked.

Rear Window is one of my favorite suspense movies!! I love that one!!

Halloween scared me more than anything, I was little when I watched it and had nightmares for a year... :p

LOL, I have to admit to loving to watching any Dracula and vampire movies.

Can you say poop-fest on the DIS???? I'm glad I only paid 4.99 for the DVD at Blockbuster, it woulda been a waste. Well, it was.... ;);)

Jeff, I wouldn't say Rosemary's Baby is one of the best, not by today's standards.

But back then, (way, way back, possible before you were born ;) ) it was considered a good suspense movie.

I saw the Sixth Sense on DVD. I had heard so much about how great it was blah blah blah that when I finally did see it, it fell kind of flat. I was very disappointed.

I agree with Snoopy on The Exorcist, it would be a comedy-horror if released today!

The book was much scarier. The movie really dropped the ball. The ending with the devil baby in the bassinet was just too campy for words. I'm not much of a Mia Farrow fan anyway.

<font color=navy>I remember seeing Rosemary's Baby when it first came on tv (was that in the 60's?) and I was young, and remember being scared when I saw it. Of course, the Exorcist scared me, and the book was even more scarier - I had to throw it away & the Ouija board was put in the garage (yup, we had one & I think it's still out there - or maybe I threw it away by now?)... anyways, the original Exorcist was on tv, and the signs were just starting & I could feel the hair on my neck start to go up, and my ds said, "This movie is kinda boring" (What?!), and my dd added, "Yeah, it's kinda slow." By today's standards, that movie isn't scary.

Halloween was the scariest movie I saw - I told the kids it was the first of those kind of movies (if I remember correctly), and it scares the kids when they watch it ...

Also, Jeepers Creepers scared the bejeebers out of me - I couldn't watch it in the theater - just sat with my knees up & my purse perched on top to block my view. The kids came out of the theater w/goosebumps. We now have that movie, and it loses a lot when you watch it at home.

& Jeff... my ds saw the Ring last night & said it was a good scary film. :)

This is all so subjective. I'll be brave and admit that I liked Blair Witch and didn't understand why The Sixth Sense was considered such a good movie. It was OK but not the least bit spooky IMO.

As for the Blair Witch thing, I could have done without the shaky camera and bad language but I liked the premise. The forest at night is VERY scary to me.

Maybe it all depends on what we consider scary? I can see some people thinking that bearing the child of the devil would be frightening.

I'll throw in my two cents and agree that The Ring is eerie. However, it's more of a mystery than a spook film IMO and more suspenseful than out and out terrifying. But again, that is VERY subjective. :)
