Hello everyone!

OK, here's my story.....
I called Westgate directly to get a quote... Got $64/night for a 2 bedroom suite. Yes, yes...I have to assist to one of their sales presentation.

But the odd thing... I had to give a deposit, which they don't guarantee after the 14 days after we booked (I only booked 3 nights for now...) ... and then, she told me that if I called back to take the next 7 nights, I'd have to pay the total price at the booking...without being able to get a full refund....

I really don't like the feeling of this.... GRRRR
Anyways, i took the 3 nights for $129... in the end, if I lose it, I'll lose $129.

I don't like Westgate - sorry.

the rooms are okay - except as I have say - there is always something wrong - or you won't go to their maintence meeting.

I am probably the wrong person to ask about Westgate.

Alot of people dont like Westgate and their practices - I wouldnt advise doing their tour at all..

I stayed at Westgate Lakes a couple of years ago taking the sales pitch/tour to get a good rate. During their sales pitch I told them that the place was nice, but I wasn't interested in buying. Although they have an answer to almost all of your reasons for not buying, I had one that they couldn't defend. I told them that I already owned a timeshare at the beach and that I love the beach and would not buy another unit anywhere else but on the ocean.

I told the salesman upfront that I was obligated to take the tour, so I was taking it. I told him I had no desire to buy, but go ahead and give me his pitch. When he was done his pitch and I said no thanks, he sent over a guy to sign off that we had been there.

This guy offered us a 'deal' where we could pay $1400 and have the use of unit for a week sometime in the next year, and if we chose to buy then, they would apply this money as a downpayment. When I politely declined, he gave me a look of surprise and said "most people take advantage of this offer because it is such a great deal". I told him that I didn't think that it was a 'great deal', and I believe I mentioned sky auction at this time. He got a little huffy, signed off the paperwork and stormed away. We had fulfilled our end and left.

Its a bit of a pain to attend the sales pitch, but I did it the morning of our second last day when we were just going to hang around the resort anyway. It was March break for us, and in exchange for the good rate that we got, I was willing to put up with it. I would do it again to get the rate.

It's so weird to hear everyone's stories - we booked Westgate Lakes through JetBlue for 12/2003 - we loved it there and had no one bother us and we didn't have to go through any sales pitches - and it cost only $67/night.

Westgate - where do I begin?

First I love Westgate Lakes- it was very nice, clean, roomy, and exceptionally affordable. With that said let me tell you that Westgate Sells Associates are there to sell you a timeshare. They are not going to be polite or nice about. They can be rude and down right offensive.

I've taken their tour twice and have even come up with strategies to beat them at their own game. Oh yeah, its a game. Would this game prevent me from taking advantage of their accomodations in exchange for 90 minutes of my time - No! I'd do their presentation again and again!

Here are my tips that get us in out within and sometimes under 90 minutes:

1. NEVER EAT THEIR BREAKFAST/lLUNCH/DINNER!!!! Almost always they offer SOME KIND of meal. Your presentation time does not begin until AFTER you finish your meal/coffee, etc.

2. If you already know what resort your touring, do some research on it!!!! Find out how much "resale" prices are off of different websites. And most importantly BRING IT WITH YOU!!! Nothing gets under their skin more than an "educated" buyer. Some will say not to buy from other resellers because you loose the resort "star" treatment!!! I simple say, "I wouldn't want to buy from a company who does not treat ALL its owner with the FULL respect they deserve"!!!!! Just because some have since enough not to end up paying 17% in interest they should be punished!!!

3. DON'T BE AFRAID OF BEING RUDE!!!!! Some people are afraid to be rude to people who have no problems being RUDE to them!!! I have gone so far as to bring materials to read!!! A friend of mine laid her head down and went to sleep (AFTER A FEW HOURS OF BEGGING from the Salesman)!!!!!! Our first presentation lasted well over 4 hours!!! TRUST ME BE RUDE!!!!!

4. If you know for sure that your not interested in buying (obsolutely sure) and you didn't eat their food - make it CLEAR from the beginning that you have to pick up your family or friend at the airport within 2 hours!!!!

5. If you have been thru a presentation before tell them you have!!! That way you don't have to go thru that speech of how good of an investment the timeshare is, and how much money you'll be saving.

6. If you have ANY complaints about the property (particularly if you are staying on that site). Bring a list of every reason why you would not buy from that property.)

7. Show your disinterest in your face. These people are trained to "pick up" on those interested. Let me give you an example. My first tour was at Westgate (VERY HARD SELL - if you can survive a Westgate presentation you can survive any of them), anyway, A friend of mine (who had their presentation before ours) bought a Timeshare there ( a 2-bedroom) for around $13,000. The next day, when we had our presentation, the same 2 bedroom lock out was offered to us at $7500. Because we really were not interested and the price kept getting lower. During August 03 we were offered a 2 bedroom at Westgate Palace for $5000 (we were almost tempted!!!) If you look on ebay right now I'm sure someone is selling a 2 bedroom (at Westgate Lakes) for every bit of $3000-$5,000. You do the math!!!!

8. If you are doing a timeshare at a world wide chain like Marriot or Starwood, they are usually low pressured but still do your research!!!! These are the most expensive.

9. Let them know that you are maxxed out financially (including credit cards) and have NO means for a down payment!!! NO ONE will let you leave without some kind of down payment.

10. If they get you to buy and you immediately realize (after leaving the parking lot) that you don't want it or can't afford it. Immediately send your letter to the resort within I believe 3-4 days (it could be more or less) to cancel because after that grace period - ITS GOING ON YOUR CREDIT REPORT!!!! :guilty:

11. If you don't own a home yet you have to perfect excuse, Why would I buy vacation property before a home, I must prioritize and right now its not even a option!!!

12. If you have children, BRING them!!!! Children especially impatient ones (that includes about 99.9% of them)!!!! Let them cry, encourage temper tantrums, and most importantly let the toddler future track star (you know the one that keeps running away from ya) Let them do their thing!!!!

Sounds like a lot, I know but still it can be worth it, if the stay is nice. I have a friend and her husband who get a kick out of getting something for "nothing" (if time is nothing). While in Orlando last year they bragged about their $200 cash in 3 hours ($66.66 an hour doesn't sound so bad now does it!!) Their presentations NEVER went over 90 minutes. They did Tip #4 and said they had to pick up her mother at the Airport. Each time leaving with $100 bills. Another friend of mine did a presentation recently for (4) 4 day disney hoppers for $135 a piece!!!! Hope this helps! It was at Orange Lake and they said the presentation was not a hard sell! :flower1:

I didn't stay at Westgate, but I did take one of their tours for option to purchase time share...it got me 4 WDW kids tickets for $80. so it was worth it!! A little drawn out when I knew I didn't want to buy... but the place seemed like a good deal....

I just booked with Westgate Lakes yesterday. I paid $325 for 5 nights. She said I would have to do a tour until she saw that I was from Wa. state. She then said it wasn't legal in my state to obligate me for a tour but she still qualified me. I paid up front and I was told that I had 14 days to cancell and receive a full refund.

Which Westgate did you go with?

jdmWhich Westgate did you go with? Jenn

Do the Westgate Lakes near I-Drive, Universal, sea world

or if you are trying to be near Disney go with Westgate Villas off 192.

Here is their website with tours, in my experience the rooms look exactly like this - even the bedspreads!

Jenn,

Please let me know how much they pressure you during and after the tour since you are from Washington state, we might want to try Westgate Villas in December.

We stayed down the road at Celebration World via SkyAuction and decided to take their tour after they offered us $150 cash...our tour only lasted 45 minutes and was very low pressure...Maybe because we were from WA state?

Have fun...

Yes, I'll definitely post when we return. I'm not too comfortable with this and am still hoping to get a II trade. I have 14 days to cancel this present setup. I wish someone knew specifically what this whole Wa state thing was about. I honestly don't think the reservationist was suppose to tell me as much as she did. She just reiterated that it wasn't legal to obligate someone from Wa state to do a timeshare tour. But, then how come I'm getting the rate? Not adding up. Also, in reading another post about Vistana Villages, it seems they were promised one property but put up in another. I dunno, have to wait and see. DH wants to go for it, has no problem saying no etc. but I'm feeling uncomfortable just in my gut about the whole thing......

We are going for Lakes, and I have to say I got a huge kick out of you little touring list above. Kinda put a light spin on somthing that is really weighing me down. Thanks!

Really great advise! I would also add that you time the sales person. Tell them thay have 90 minutes of your undiveded attention and that's it! Let them know when they have 30 minutes left so they can wrap things up.

The salespeople at Westgate are known sharks. I have been to many timeshare presentations and they are the worst, hands down. Practice saying "no" a lot before you go. Think of the commercial with the guy who answers "no" to all the questions on the phone. Be him. Don't try to be the salesperson's friend. S/he isn't your friend. S/he wants a commission, pure and simple and will pull every dirty trick in the book to get it. Be aware that once the salesperson is done with you, they will then call the manager in. The manager is the "bad guy" of the group and will exert the most pressure. When he's done, they will call in one final person in to "make sure" that all the bases were covered before they sign you out. S/he's the "good guy", but still wants to clinch the sale, so don't let your guard down.

We were at a Westgate sales presentation for over 3 hours. My silly DH kept on asking questions  and I kept on kicking him under the table. I'm amazed that his shins were not black and blue by the time we were finished with the tour!

I really like all the advice. Thanks!!!

I was at Westgate Lakes 2 years ago. We didn't know about what was going on, and said we'd like breakfast before going out. Were we ever wrong. I didn't think we'd get out.
My question is, as timeshare owners in The Pocono's in Pa., we exchanged to go to Westgate Villa's in March. Do we have to go to a presentation? We're going there on Vacation. We didn't book it through them. We went through Interval.
Both my wife & I work at the same place, and we're not sure about having our jobs after May. I'm sure they wouldn't want to hear that, but I was just looking into if we "HAVE TO" go through it, or not. Thanks again for all your help!

AFAIK you don't have to take a timeshare tour unless you participate in a promotion. That won't stop them from calling you to make an appointment, though!

Just be sure you don't accidentally book into the Westgate Palace (Carrier Drive), officially known as "the ugliest two buildings in Orlando", lol!

If you're familiar with ugly ol' Pepto & Bismal, you'll be jaw-droppingly stunned by their new, inexplicable paint job. I have no idea why on earth Westgate decided to paint them like a cheap Greek restaurant (complete with strange "columns" that mysteriously appear in the middle of the building for no reason at all), but they are truly a thing of ugly beauty. They're actually worth a drive past, and a quick picture, lol! :rotfl2:

Just to let you know that I've cancelled my reservation with a full refund (should get my statement soon) and booked with Cypress Pointe Grand Villas. Much better experience there!!

Chantal

I think you made the right choice. My tour with Cypress Point was painless. I enforced the 90 minute rule, told them "no" (politely) all along the way and I got along great with the salespeople and mangers.

See with Cypress pointe, i don't have to attend a sales thing...but maybe we will if there;s freebies involved - we'll see.
