Should I book low and hope for an upgrade? We have category 7 and category 6 on reserve until Tuesday.

Thanks!
Kim

No. You should book the category you will be happy with, since that's where you'll probably end up.

All of the talk on these boards about upgrades gets everyone thinking and dreaming about that and sometimes it sounds like upgrades are a regular event (not true). It is the luck of the draw and pixie dust only that seem to influence whether or not it happens.

Book what you'll be happy with (and what you can afford) so you don't regret your decision later.

I booked a Cat. 6, because that's what I wanted. A couple of weeks before our cruise I was upgraded to a 4. I don't know why..no one called to ask even. we did book 15 months in advance, but I know lots of people did the same and didn't get an upgrade. don't know how I can go to a lower category if we book again...our room was perfect for us.

I think you should book the room you want, that way you aren't disappointed. However, of the four times I have been, I have been upgraded three. I always book a cat 11 and the last time I went they upgraded us to a cat 7. It is completely luck of the draw they say, but I think that it is different. I actually spoke to a discruiseline manager and he said that if the ship is not full, then they will upgrade the people already booked and open the lower catergories at a discounted price to fill the ship. Who knows.

Four DCL cruises ... no upgrades. We book what we want and don't expect any changes. No disappointments .... ever

Hi there

I think it would be best to book the catagory that you want - so that you won't be disappointed. On our last cruise we booked a Cat.9 as we had been in one for our first cruise, then a week before our cruise DCL phoned us and gave us a Cat.6 free upgrade. We were totally thrilled and excited as we had a veranda. Now our next cruise is May 2005 and we've booked a Cat.6, cos we just loved that veranda and didn't want to risk just booking a Cat.9 and living in hope for an upgrade.

Been on 6 cruise 7 and 8 booked ,

We book what we would like to have ... No upgrades yet From Dcl

We However did upgrade from cat 10 Secret porthole room to a Cat 4 on deck 8 at the Port on the day of the cruise and we feel we got the room for less than what u would have paid for it if u had booked it prior to the cruise date... Cat 3 was not available !! this was paid for...

But we are hoping for a Upgrade on the 14 day cruise
we are in cat 11 inside stateroom ..Yicks no window / no verandah
this will be one we either upgrade at the port or pay the $1200.00 to Get a window .... will be watching room availabilty very closely... it is still a year away..
And when we Sail in October We are going to inQuire with the onbard booking agent... never hurts to Ask... worst they can say is No..

I've cruised on the Magic 10 times, and have been upgraded on 3. In each case, the upgrade was from a cat 11 (this is the most common upgrade as they want to have "entry level" pricing available.)

Book a category where you will be happy....any upgrade is then a bonus. If you book low and hope, an upgrade may well not be available to purchase later if the freebie doesn't come thru.

We have booked a 6 down to an 11......for 2 of us, an 11 is adequate, although DD really likes the window. Only you can decide where you need to be for a magical cruise! Book the lowest level that meets your needs (wants), then hope....but don't book a 9 if you really want a verandah. You don't want to be sad about your cabin.

We've been on 6 cruises, and were upgraded from Cat 9 to cat 5 on each of our last 2 cruises....both of these were on the Wonder

4 cruises, our most recent we were upgraded at the port from a 6 to a 4. Preferred the location we had originally booked better, but the extra space was nice.

We booked a category 10 and got upgraded to category 6 the week before we left. The rooms are identical in size except the category 6 also has the verandah. According to the price the category 6 room would have cost the 4 or us $1,600 more.
We LOVED the Verandah, but not enough to pay $1,600 more to get it.

How do you check the room availability? I'm also on the 14 day CA to FL cruise in cat. 11. I booked the first day. I inquired about changing to cat. 9 at the first day prices and the price increases $1200. Is that worth it for cat. 9?

I'd also say book what you'd be happy in. We booked 2 connecting Cat 8's and 3 weeks before we were to sail we got upgraded to 2 connecting Cat 4's. We've done several cruises on different lines (just did our 14th I think) and this is the first upgrade ever. It certainly does happen but I definitely wouldn't count on it. We booked our cruise through Dreams about 13 months out.

Has anyone been upgraded from a wheelchair room to a higher cat wheelchair room?

MM2U2,

The price of 1200.00 was what I was told By my TA.

worth it I dont know as we have never had cat 11 before..

We also have first day prices..

And when Disney comes back on line after there system upgrade on May 30th.. u can look on travelosity

just go through the motions of booking a cruise and it will give u up to 8 staterooms for each cat to choose from , If there are that many in a certian Cat.

I still think there is a lot of uncertianty with the reservations that are in place and feel that 59 days before the cruise will tell the whole story.. final payment due 60 days out..
But if u think u would like to up grade i would just go for it..

however we are going to wait ,
1) To see if disney upgrades us..
2) How long current job holds out..
3) Will check at 59 days out
Last option Up grade at the Port...

Can't convice DH to upgrade so I'll be in cabin 6039 8/20/05 to
9/3/05. See you there! Our TA also quoted us $1200 to upgrade to cat. 9 based on the orginal day prices.

We booked early and were upgraded from a CAT 12 to Cat 9 with a porthole.:D

2 cruises, 2 upgrades. One from 11 to 8 and the other from 11 to 9. The first on the Wonder, the second on the Magic. Both times booked 30-60 days out and both times in the off season at rates that were about 50% off full price.

cruised once with Disney, upgraded from cat 11 to cat 8. Like others here I booked way early so I guess that helps. I looked at the rooms across the hall from us that we would have had (cat 11). It is easy to peek in while they are cleaning each day. I don't think it would have bothered me at all to have been in my original cat 11.
Have fun!
