I know there are a lot of Wal-Mart haters here, but I think there are a lot like me who like the store too so I just wanted to say that we're finally going to be getting a supercenter!! I'm so excited!!

They talked about one when my DH worked in the receiving dept. for 3 years, and that was 6-7 years ago.

But now it's finally going to happen. They bought the property a year or two ago, and it has all now been leveled. Our DD is a zone supervisor at our local one, and she said ground-breaking will be in June and it won't open until next June so I've got more than a year to wait but it will be SO NICE to have one close by. As it is now I have to drive about 45-minutes to get to one.

And it will be nice to give the big local grocery store some competition. I'm sure they'll have to lower their prices to keep in competition somewhat. Like with the coffee beans we buy, the bag is over $16 at the grocery store, and just over $11 at Wal-Mart. Quite a difference!! :scared1:

Like the old Pointer Sisters song, "I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it..." :woohoo:

Yay! Although, I'll warn you to still keep an eye on the prices at W. There are certain items I can save a bunch on (MILK!), but others that are a good bit cheeper at the local Food Lion.

How small of a town do you live in? It actually took us a long time to wait for our Walmart, and then even after they broke ground things kept coming up that stalled it for another couple of years. It was ridiculous. It finally opened last year. By that point, people had lost interest and grand opening was a bust. It wasn't even a full-size supercenter, just a scaled down version.

Also, like the other poster mentioned, prices aren't even that great. :sad2:

We still basically drive 30 miles to get to a decent Walmart with good prices. We don't use ours any more than we do our local grocery store.

i was at a walmart supercenter today and i could'nt believe how the company is pushing it's generic branding.

so many of the brand name items are no longer carried b/c walmart has their version instead. this was especialy apparant in the dairy section. the brand name stuff like milk and sourcream were only available in the smaller container/higher price per unit packaging while the walmart brands that expire sooner ate up all the shelving space.

since the supercenter is'nt super convenient to us i used to only go once every couple of months to stock up, but after today i think i'll be looking at the ads for these items at the stores closer to home.

I notice this too, I refuse to shop there, but I have noticed a lot of their new commercials are pushing their Great Value brand.

the other thing i have noticed-since safeway stopped allot of their programs (air miles and such) their prices have dropped dramaticly. there are some items i never bought at safeway before b/c they were so much higher than walmart. now that they've come down in price they are close to matching walmart's price, and if it's on sale beating it like crazy.

I am so jealous. I want a supercenter but I dont see that happening here.

I don't like meat injected with 12% solution and fruit flies around aging, overpriced produce so I stay away. My parents used to be loyal WM shoppers but had switched to ad shopping and double couponing last year. They went into SWM for the first time this year last night and about fell over at how high the prices had become at WalMart.

The only plus I see is Michigan needs jobs, and this will add a few. I'm not seeing other grocers going out of business, mainly because they are cheaper anyway.

I used to shop at SWM until I realized that I spent 30 minutes waiting to check out each time I went. My time is more valuable than the few dollars I saved! Besides, I do OK with Publix BOGO sales and coupons. :thumbsup2

Oh, I do agree with you about the meat and produce. I don't buy those at Wal-Mart, but everything else I do when I get the chance. Our Wal-Mart has a few food aisles, but will of course have so much more once we get the super center. So, for now I buy what I can at Wal-Mart, plus go to our regular grocery store but most of their prices are much higher than Wal-Mart, for now anyway. It will be interesting to see what happens when the super center opens next year.

I hope you do not shop for clothing there. The one by me which is one of the non super walmarts in my area, has a much better selection on clothes, toys, anything that is not food. If you go to the super walmart, the clothing selection is at least half of what our non super walmart is. You can find good values there (example 2 liters for $1 vs. 1.59 at Kroger). So I go to the super walmart a town over when I am out that way and my walmart for everything else. They have talked about making ours super for about 8 years, so I know it will happen eventually. Maybe it is because it is by Sam's Club it is taking longer.
