Let me start by saying DLRP is great!! But what a trip....

Can't believe I managed to get back in one piece. But glad to be home. Purely because travelling in a group of 13 is a definite no no.

Had a great time, didn't get to do all the rides, because half the group couldn't keep up and didn't want to split up. I would hate to think what the group would have done if I wasn't there, maybe stayed in the hotel. I had to organise everything. They couldn't seem to read the map, kept asking me "what should we do next, where should we go", etc. etc.

Just as I suspected before I went, I did get the blame for everything. My sister did nothing but argue and moan about not getting autographs and pictures of the characters with her 10 month old daughter. Yet when she did see one she ran off and left the daughter with us to get the autograph. Yet on the last night I got roared at because she didn't get enough of them. I mean for the love of god, she's 10 months old, she's not going to remember whether or not a character signed a book. It's not the end of the world. But you'd think it was.

It rained solid on Monday, but we stayed out all day, just going back to the hotel to change & went back straight away. Got soaked through my shoes and everything. Now I am on antibiotics.

Not a great food choice, chips with everything. My mum had mashed potato in Planet Hollywood (it was Smash), so after that it was chips, chips, chips. None of the adults cared what we had to eat, but for fussy children it is very difficult to get them to eat (yes believe it or not, kids who don't like eating chips).

We stayed in the Holiday Inn which was great. Rooms clean, towels changed every day, etc. Only gripe was that one night my sister needed bottled water (the tap water was a funny colour when boiled for the baby's bottles). All the vending machines were empty of water and she went and asked the bar staff for some water, they refused, saying they were closed. Even after explaining why she needed it, they wouldn't serve her. Bloody ridiculous.

On Halloween we left the park after the Once Upon A Dream Parade (fantastic) to go and get changed into our costumes. There was a huge crowd waiting for the bus and every other time we queued for it, it was orderly, but not that time. There was a huge crush for the bus, kids fell under the bus, etc. So be careful when queueing for the buses (maybe even get a taxi). Hold on tight to your kids!!!

My sister had the baby in the buggy and was half on/half off the bus when these 2 men and 2women, pushed her out of the way. The buggy went sideways & only for my uncle catching it, it would have fallen back out of the bus. The smaller kids, were being stood on, squashed, screaming, one was pushed off the foot path & went under the bus. It was extremely scary, the kids were absolutely petrified.

We managed to calm them down in the hotel and persuaded them to go back to the park (the younger ones didn't want to get on the bus). The fireworks were fantastic. But paying 29euro for a "party" that turned out to be any other night in the park except for the fireworks at 12.20 am was a bit much.

And to top it off, my mobile phone was stolen from my bag. Thank goodness my wallet was in a different part. I was so upset, not because of the phone, it can be replaced, but because I was the person who, on finding park entry tickets on the ground (I found 4), bothered my a*se to hand them into the City Hall (could have just left them or thrown them in the bin).

I did it so the people who lost them could get them back (names were on the back and the hotel they were staying in). For my trouble, my phone was taken. And they say no good deed.... Ha yeah right.

Oh dear!! Hope it wasn't all bad for you. We got soaked on Monday aswell but enjoyed that day the best as it was so much quieter than Saturday!! :woohoo:
Looked out for your gang with nappies trailing behind [hope your sis manged!]:lmao:
Will be writing a trip report myself in the next few days about our big adventure to DLRP in our motorhome. Very surreal sitting in your pyjamas in the car park having your morning cuppa overlooking the park!!

Maybe next time go on your own!!
Regards
Annie

Sounds like the rest of your party put undue expectations on you. Sorry to hear that the trip was made so difficult :)

I am sorry to read you had such a bad experience, a party of 13 sounds definately too many to me, it was already too much difficult to make everyone happy in 1996 when we were a party of 6!!!

Such a shame you had so much put on you, i hope it didnt ruin your trip too much.

Lisa

Oh dear - sometimes people are so unappreciative. I don't think it matters whether you're organising a trip to Disney or anything else, with that many people if you're the organiser you get the blame for anything which goes wrong - speaking from personal experience - then you wonder why you went to all the trouble.

The situation with the buses is what has always put me off staying off site as I don't think I could cope with it, I prefer just a leisurely stroll back to the hotel.

Hope you had a great time though.

Mags

We too thought the party wasn't worth the money - it was great to see the fireworks and Fantillusion but we expected unique shows etc not the ones we had already seen during the regaular park hours. It was mega busy and lines on the more popular rides horrendous - queues of 2 hours on BTM and Space Mtn _ they stayed like that the following day as well!

We also got soaked to the skin on Monday - we only managed to 2pm and left for the hotel - didn't wear my trainers again during the holiday they didn't dry out. But the weather was great the rest of the time we were there thank goodness.

Your pretrip worries did become reality then - how rotten of everyone to expect you to organise them, I really feel for you I would be absolutely evil if my holiday was ruined by unthinking and selfish people.

You obviously loved the park and the Disney experience or would've given the opportunity, so I would say when you next get the chance, book for yourself and immediate family in an onsite hotel ( I hate shuttle buses for the same reasons as you've mentioned, my DH had to lift a child over the heads of everyone to pass him back to his dad, as they got pushed out of the way whilst they tried to negotiate getting a little one and pushchair onto a shuttle bus :sad2: )

You deserve another break to get over the stress this one caused you.

Hmmmm, is this the Halloween Party you are talking about?

My DD (15) is desperate to go to this next year, as she says everyone dresses up, etc... Is it not all it's cracked up to be then?

I personally didn't think it was worth it (neither did the rest of our group). I was expecting more. As Pigby said, it was the same shows that were on during the other days we were there. The fireworks were great, but I am sure if you were outside the parks in Disney Village you would have seen them anyway.

We all dressed up, it was hilarious. Alot of people dressed up but the majority were not. The queues were crazy on the rides and there is no FASTPASS on Halloween night.

When you enter the park that night with your Halloween Party Ticket you are also given an orange wristband. This is checked for before going on any rides. We saw some people being turned away from rides after queueing for over an hour because they didn't have them. They had been in the park all day and thought if they didn't leave they would be alright. But not so. They could remain in the park but not go on the rides. As the evening went on they had barriers up at the entrance to the lands checking for them as well. So if you were in the park without the party ticket, you were limited to Main Street for the night.

I will definitely go back. The queue for the buses would not put me off staying off site, it was only that one time that it was manic. You still have to queue for the Disney Hotels and as I said earlier some of the hotels looked a bit old and tatty. Would have no problem staying in Holiday Inn again.

I know we were on holiday and we would eat in restaurants. But with younger kids, it would have been great to have a shop where you could get things like milk, bread, something to nibble on in the hotel in the evenings for them, etc.

We needed bread to make "soup & bread" for the baby and had to take bread from the breakfast buffet every morning (it was hard by evening) but we had nothing else. One of the other kids, drank ordinary milk in a bottle going to bed & we ended up having to buy 4 small glasses of milk from the bar every night, they wouldn't sell us the carton (even though they were pouring from it anyway).

But as I said already, I WOULD GO BACK.

Well that's good to know but -as Kevankiki - i had already started planning our next trip for Halloween 2008 and now i wonder if it will be worth the money :sad2: .
I mean: we could see the same shows and the park all dressed up someday in October and save the money (and the hassle) of the 31st night.
Or not :confused3

I thought it was possible to buy milk and snacks from the garage by the Sante Fe, possibly also the shop in the train station? There would have been nothing stopping one (or even all of you) jumping on the shuttle for the Sante Fe and paying a visit to the garage to buy these things either ;)

Not sure what to do about the Halloween Party now, though I believe we should get tickets for half the price, but what is to be gained other than queuing for the rides? Bearing in mind standing for long periods of time can be a problem for me, I might have to give this whole idea careful consideration! :headache:

Hi gcmcmsa

You obviously enjoyed the holiday inn, and would recommend it again (my DD also loves the look of this hotel, and would like to stay there sometime). Also, with such a large group your first time, it probably did make quite a substantial saving being offsite, and paying room only then buying park tickets separately.

There are advantages to being onsite though - one being that you don't have to get the shuttle bus at all from the hotels to the parks - you can walk it, even to the Santa Fe and Cheyenne hotels, in 15 minutes (and its a pleasant walk). As has been said the Santa Fe is right beside a filling station that does sell bread, milk, water and snacks etc.

Also, as far as price goes, it depends on when you book and what offers are available. My whole package at the Santa Fe (2 nights bed and breakfast, plus 3-day hopper tickets for one adult and one child) was £159 when I went in early October this year, because I booked early with Disney direct. My sister was there last September, 2 adults, 2 children, 2 nights at the Cheyenne, 2-day hopper tickets for everyone, plus crossing on the Eurotunnel included, for £88 each.

I would agree, the outside of the Santa Fe and Cheyenne don't look as impressive as the Holiday Inn, but thats due to the theming of the hotels - the Santa Fe is supposed to represent a Mexican barren outpost, and Cheyenne a typical Western one-horse town. Inside, these hotels are lovely, warm, brightly coloured, and clean. And for the children, there are regular (and some surprise) visits from their favourite Disney characters.

I hope you enjoy planning, and going on, your next trip (its addictive :rotfl: )

Great that you would love to go back.

When we stayed at the HI I took DD in her baby grow ;) down with me and her bottle each evening and the bar staff happily gave us the milk for free so that she could have a bed-time drink :)

On our first ever trip we made the mistake of catching the shuttle bus to Santa Fe and it was AWFUL. It wasn't until the second year that we discovered the lovely short walk along the canal to the Santa Fe :headache: and we never ever used the shuttle again. One year I did consider staying off site to save money but found the Holiday Inn, Explorers and Dream Castle far more expensive than the Santa Fe :confused3 so actually couldn't afford to stay off site.
I also love the convenience of the hotel charge card that you get when you stay in a Disney Hotel - that way only one payment goes through on my credit card and I find it easier to keep track of my (extensive) spending.
I have seen places in the Santa Fe that could do with a lick of paint, but as OP said, it is just somehwere to lay my head so I'm not all that bothered about a couple of shabby corners. (mind you, having lashed out on Sequoia Lodge for our last trip I may have trouble going back to SF)
For me, this year, the addition of EMH has meant I wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else unless I had a Dream AP - those 2 precious hours in the Park before most people are allowed in, had a worth beyond mere money (see- they even made me wax lyrical!)

I'm sorry that the group you went with were expecting you to make all the decisions & then moaning at the end of the trip.

Hopefully when you go back, it will only be a small group so yo can enjoy it more.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at the Halloween party. We went in 2005 and 2006 and had a great time. The park was closed to anyone who didn't have a ticket to the party (there were no wristbands) so even though it was crowded, it wasn't so bad, as only the party-goers were in the park. Most of the guests were in costume, and the atmosphere was amazing. There were also lots of shows and entertainers which were only present on the party night. 2005 was a lot better as the party night was held on 2 nights which made it much less crowded, there was also a parade which the costumed guests took part in and a fatastic light and firework show.

It sounds as though the party is going down-hill a bit, which is a shame, as I was initially gutted to miss it this year, but now feel maybe I didn't miss much! I plan to go back in 2009, so I hope things improve by then!

sorry to hear that.

why don't people queue for a bus???

i am mean to be going on sat - i am worried now!

I'd not worry. We have been a number of times and if you know what to expect you'll be suitably forarmed for your experience.

You will be visiting one of the prettiest Disney parks so have a lovely time :goodvibes

We booked at 3 different times. I booked for myself and 3 kids back in March and the cheapest was Holiday Inn. Another group booked in May and the last group booked in August and each time Holiday Inn was the cheapest option. I would love to see prices like you have quoted, but couldn't get these either on the net or with Disney direct.

I would love to try the eurotunnel, but coming from Ireland, what airport in London should we fly to, cheapest for us would be Stanstead (could go there for a cent each way), where to from then to get eurotunnel??

Didn't know about the station near the Santa Fe.
