I am probably not allowed to post this on the TR board, because it was a trip to the Times Union Arena in Albany, NY, not a trip to WDW. But I figure the mods will move it to where they think it belongs!

Our trip began when I read on DISboards about the HSM Concert Tour. :disrocks: Boy would my DDs love that! I checked the schedule and the closest the tour was coming was... Albany, a three hour drive away. And the concert was 7 pm on Sunday Jan 7. I reasoned that I love road trips and the effort to get there would simply add to the excitement. Before tickets went on sale, the start time was briefly changed to 4 pm. That would have been a lot better for us. But it reverted to 7 pm. Well, the kids would just have to sleep in the car. They'd be missing 5 days of school when we went to visit my brother for the holidays, and they couldn't miss another day! We'd drive back that night.

Next I waited for the tickets to go on sale. Finally you could buy, but it was the presale and you had to have a code. Luckily, a quick search at the DISboards revealed the code! :thanks: :disrocks: I bought seats at the middle of the three prices. The fees for four tickets cost the same as one of the tickets! Our idea of the big day out is a matinee at the movie theater, so it seemed quite pricey to me, but I knew this was the ultimate gift for DDs.

I'm going to post this & continue in follow-up posts. Please let me know if you are interested!

In the weeks leading up to the concert.....

*the tickets arrived. I made color copies and tucked them in envelopes to give to the girls on the last night of Hanukah, putting the originals away safely.

*our 12 year old station wagon died. The trip to Albany would be much more pleasant in our beautiful new minivan!

*I gave DDs their tickets as planned. They were not as excited as I'd hoped. Turns out they didn't really know what the event would be. I explained that Zac Efron was not part of the tour. "Are the others going to be there!?" they asked. "Vanessa Hudgens?" We speculated what the concert would consist of. We decided that there would be other music, because all of the HSM numbers would not take up enough time. We also figured that someone would take Zac Efron's place and sing Troy's part, because Troy couldn't be left out.

*My brother and SIL gave the girls each a HSM shirt for Christmas! (You will see these in upcoming photos.) That was a great gift.

*I decided I did not want to drive directly from our house to the arena. It would be too nerve-wracking to be on the highway and wondering if we'd make it on time. I decided to leave midday and go to a mall first. I don't know Albany at all, but I looked online and found the Crossgates Mall right off the highway, with loads of good stores. It seemed pretty easy to get to the arena from there too. This would be the perfect place to relax after the drive and pass the time until 7 pm.

It is WDW Highschool Musical Review right? I don't have a problem with it being on the TR Board.

I'm in solgent! Good to see you back writing :)

DD13 requested and received the DVD for Christmas - can't wait to hear all about it.

OK, I am happy that the TR can stay (the concert was a Disney event!) and that I got a nice message from blue_river!

First, let me show you my DDs' spiffy shirts:

Lots of kids were wearing HSM shirts, of course. I was amazed at the variety. I mean, of course there will be shirts. I'd be shocked if there weren't. But I didn't think Disney would necessarily whip up 4 dozen different designs to tempt the public! I've just got to be impressed with their ambitious marketing and their "No Dollar Left Unspent" approach!

But I am getting ahead of my story.

We let town at 11:30. I asked the girls if they wanted to eat first or start driving. They chose driving.

But after a couple of hours we were getting pretty hungry, but there wasn't anywhere to stop to eat the lunch DH had packed for us, unless we just ate in the car, but this was our brand new car that I didn't want to eat in.

Finally I said we could eat some of the food very carefully. I didn't stop and we arrived at the mall at 2:30. Actually I missed the exit the first time, but we made it there OK. This mall is enormous. It has a a lot of stores, six or so large "anchor" stores, a 18-screen movie theater, a fitness center, a full-size Borders. We went to the food court and scarfed down the remainder of our lunch.

Next stop was the Disney store! We don't have one near us so we seize any opportunities we have to visit one. Actually we did stray into Brookstone on the way, but we all really wanted Disney. Post-Christmas sale was in progress. I noticed some cute kids t-shirts for 25% off and began to search for sizes and designs that I thought DDs would like. I showed them my choices and asked for their opinions. They surveyed the other options and each agreed that the shirt I had selected for her was her favorite. DD12a's shirt is a Lady and the Tramp design, DD12b's is Tinkerbelle, and DD8's is Stitch. Hers is actually a boy design (different cut and sizing than the girl shirts), but she said she didn't mind. Stitch is her favorite. She chose the larger of the two possible sizes so she'll be able to wear it for a long time. DD12b showed me a Grumpy mug that she wanted us to get for DH. It was marked down from $9.50 to $4.99 and 25% off that! Good find!

Since we'd eaten our lunch so late nobody was very hungry. I got a latte from Starbucks for myself, and from Auntie Annie's pretzels, a large lemonade for the girls to share and two original salted pretzels for us. We didn't even eat all of the pretzels. I packed up the remaining half for later.

It was about 5:45 and time to head to the arena.

This was incredibly stressful for me. The map showed that Rte 20 (Western Ave) went more or less straight from the mall to the arena. But there were no signs at the mall directly me to that road. I decided to get out of the mall and work it out once I was on the surface roads. I'm great at finding my way around. I followed signs to Washington Ave and turned the way most cars were heading. The compass on my new car said we were going east. Perfect! I looked at the map (not a very good map, only major roads were named) and decided that Washington Ave must be the orange road above the mall. It's parallel to Western and we could get to the arena just by staying on it. Hurray!

I was driving but self-doubt had set in immediately. Were we going the right way? What if we'd come all this way and couldn't find the arena!? Why didn't I get a good, detailed map? Why didn't I ask at the mall about Western Ave? I've been right before but that doesn't mean I'm right now. Should I stop and ask if I'm headed in the right direction? The kids were peacefully reading. They had no idea of my inner turmoil. I checked the clock and it was about 2 minutes later than my previous check. There was still plenty of time. Everything supported my theory that we were going the right way. Why not wait until I got some evidence that things were wrong before looking for help. We were going east.

Finally, I saw tall buildings and knew we were in the downtown area where the arena is located. I chose to turn right, but quickly decided it had been too soon and went around the block for another pass. This time I saw the street I was looking for (Pearl St) and groups of people heading for the show. There were parking lots but I'd also seen street parking, so I decided to look for a space. We found one about 3 blocks past Pearl Street. We'd made it!

We walked to the arena and were in our seats before 6:30.

Plenty of time to visit the restroom and soak up the scene.

I was happy with our seats. The stage was directly in front of us & we were not too high up.

7 pm rolled around with no sign of the concert starting. People were still taking their seats.

Finally, at 7:10, the lights went down. Massive excitement in the audience.

(By the way, I did not take notes, so am not 100% sure of the accuracy of my reporting, but this is what I remember.)

A performer emerged and a big banner proclaimed that it was Jordan Pruitt. I didn't remember her from the movie. I deduced that she was a warm-up act and wasn't actually in the movie. She sang 4 songs, I think. I think her music videos have been on the Disney Channel. We don't have cable so we were not as clued-in as most of the crowd. Her second song, "Miss Popularity" was pretty cute.

Her last song was "We are Family" which she tried to get everyone to stand up and sing with her, but most people didn't know the words.

After she left the stage, the screens announced a 20 minute intermission.

20 minutes!! Somehow there was enough to see that we passed the time until the lights dimmed again.

Then a big picture was projected behind the stage. It showed the basketball scoreboard, with the Wildcats 67 and the other team 68. (As you know, this was the score in the championship game before Troy made the game-winning shot at the buzzer.) Sixty seconds were on the clock and the seconds were counting down! This was a very exciting start to the show. I wish I had gotten a photo of it. Everyone chanted the numbers down from 10!

As the music began, two people came forward onstage, backlit so that only their silouettes could be seen. It was "Troy" and Gabriella. Four more people came out, two on each side. We knew it was Ryan, Sharpay, Taylor and Chad. When the music hit a climax, they jumped up the way that they are on the HSM DVD box and many other publicity items such as DD12b's T-shirt. They sang "Start of Something New."

Back-up singers and dancers came out and they brought a round cafeteria table. The group performed "Stick to the Status Quo." The way this was done, the movie was projected on the huge curtain behind the stage for the verses and the live performers did the chorus. They ended up posed on and around the table.

The guy who played Ryan said he would be the MC for the evening. He said he would tell us what was going on and make sure we had an amazing time, "and I know you will, because we are going to do EVERY SINGLE NUMBER from High School Musical!" Cue wild applause. There would also be three "showcases" with Corbin Bleu, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens performing songs from their new albums. He said that he had to talk to us about something. "You may have noticed that one member of our Wildcat team isn't with us." He explained that Zac Efron (Troy in the movie) was filming a movie ("Hairspray") with John Travolta, and that taking his place was Drew Seeley, whom we might know from his music video that had been on the Disney Channel.

Then everyone left the stage except Vaness Hudgens, who sang, "When There Was Me and You" without much theatrics (see photo below).

Lucas (Ryan) came back and said we would see much more of Vanessa later.

Drew Seeley did a song of his.

A row of red lockers appeared on stage. As the music started, the lockers opened and performers stepped out in basketball costumes for "Getcha Head in the Game." DDs were excited because one of the players was a girl. They had real basketballs and there was was a real basket attached to the top of the ramp. You can see it in this blurry photo. Troy took a long shot the way he does in the movie but he missed.

92108IMG_5400_800_x_600_.jpg

This number really impressed me because they did the dance from the movie with the basketballs. I thought that dance was really cool, with the dribbling in unison and fake throwing the ball along with the dance moves, and I had assumed that multiple takes and editing had been required to achieve it. But the performers did the dance (or at least a good bit of it) and nobody dropped a ball. As you can see in the photo, various images came up on the big screen, such as a large basketball and the song lyrics.

After the song, a large number of beach balls that looked like basketballs appeared on stage and the performers threw them out into the crowd. At some events I've been to people try to keep a beach ball in the air and hit it up when it comes to them. But in this case I guess people wanted the balls as souvenirs because they didn't go anywhere! They were quickly grabbed and stowed away by people in the audience.

The performers exited and then Lucas ran on in a track suit with one of the beach balls acting as if he was ready to do the number with them. "Come on, guys!" he said. "I thought we were going to do "Getcha Head in the Game."" He pretended to be disapppointed and said that instead he would challenge someone to one-on-one. He picked out a young boy up front and ask if the boy wanted to take him one. The camera crew showed the boy on the big screen and he said yes. Lucas found out the boy was 9. He said, "I'm 22. Do you still think you can take me?" The boy said yes. Lucas then said he was scared of the boy. Rather than play basketball with him, he signed the ball and gave it to him.

I think at this point Ashley Tisdale did three songs from her new album. Lucas said the album is not out yet, so nobody has heard the songs, but she was performing them just for us. Often during these solo performances, the screen would show the person live as they were singing so that everyone could see them very well. Here is an example of what I mean.

92108IMG_5398_800_x_600_.jpg

One of her songs was the title track "Headstrong" (Chorus: "Headstrong, can you feel the beat, Meltdown, can you feel the heat). Her third song was "He Said She Said." I don't remember the other one. At one point she skipped up and then down the big ramp.

Then I think Drew Seeley did his song "Dance With Me." Lucas said that Monique (Taylor) had been on "Dancing with the Stars" (which we had never watched) and that she was going to recreate the dance from the video. So while Drew sang on one side of the stage, Monique and a male partner danced.

After their numbers the performers would go have little chats and interactions with Lucas. I'm sure these were scripted but for the most part they were very natural and seemed relaxed and spontaneous. Monique said that her dance partner was one of the Wildcats. Lucas said she had disappeared for four months, refering to the "Dancing" show, and she said that she had loved it and she appreciated the fans for voting for her.

All of them constantly thanked the audience and the fans. They said, "You put us here" and "I love you." To be honest, I really thought it was too much. It's good for peformers have some humility and realize that they would be nowhere without fans, but they laid it on so thick that it did not come across as sincere. But I'm cynical.

Then I think it was Corbin Bleu's time. He did a song from the new Disney Channel Movie "Jump In," that was nicely choreographed with him shadow boxing with and knocking out each of his four back-up singers and then they all got jump ropes and did some simple moves. Then he tossed his rope away and the four of them held their ropes in such as way as to form a boxing ring around him, and he did some moves inside that. Obviously, the boxing and jump ropes are themes from the movie. The lyrics were simple but catchy-- "Push it to the limit, if you're in it to win it" or something like that. Then he did a song from his own album about marching to the beat of your own drum. He had a marching band vest added to his outfit and the back up performers had similar outfits and drums, and he went up the ramp to the band and did some mock drumming.

Lucas came out in a marching band hat and teased Corbin about his hair and how he would look funny with a hat.

Next came "What I've Been Looking For." Troy and Gabriella sang it standing together at the top of the ramp. Then Ryan and Sharpay sang their version on the stage below, with all their fun moves and concluding with Ryan saying, "Everyone loves a good jazz square."

Vanessa Hudgens then performed three songs from her album. I think my DDs were a bit taken aback at how sexy and vampy she was. So different from studious Gabriella! A huge glittery purple V descended from the ceiling during her first number and the big screen showed large diamonds cascading down. Between songs she told Lucas that she had been thrilled to unexpectedly catch her song on the radio and she had taken her mom, dad, sister and pet on tour with her. Lucas asked about the first single from her album and was she up to doing it for us. "For my fans, of course I am!" she warbled and ran back on stage for her final song. This is another instance of the fake humility I mentioned before. Of course this song was part of the program, so why pretend that it was something extra to please her fans? I guess, as they say in HSM, "That's showbiz."

Ryan and Sharpay performed "Bop to the Top" the same as in the movie except they did not have the ladder. Sharpay wore the same frilly electric blue dress.

Then Troy and Gabriella sang "Breaking Free." (They didn't act the part where she was nervous about singing.)

Finally, "We're All in This Together," a great finale if ever there was one. At the end, there was confetti and fireworks-type effects. The back-up singers melted away and as Ryan called, "We'll see you next summer in High School Musical 2!" the six main performers took their leave, waving goodbye.

92108IMG_5402_800_x_600_.jpg

The HSM phase of the show was about an hour and a half. It kind of came across as a massive commercial for HSM, HSM2, Jump In, Dancing with the Stars, and everyone's albums. But at the same time there was a lot of effort and care and energy put into the staging and the dance routines. Everyone on stage was clearly working hard and giving his and her all, and it was entertaining. Overall it was definitely worth it to me.

DDs were very happy and excited. They said, referring to the HSM stars, "They were right there!" They thanked me for getting the tickets and making the trip. They said their friends were jealous. I felt I had continued to enhance my reputation as an awesome mom. :)

As we walked back to the car, I figured I'd study the map again and figure out how to get back to the highway. Then we passed a uniformed doorman in front of a building. He gave me very clear and simple directions. Thank you so much to that doorman! We finished the leftover lemonade and pretzel before I started driving, and then we were on our way back. I encouraged the girls to try to sleep. Unfortunately this meant I probably shouldn't listen to the radio, so I just let my mind wander. We stopped after about 2 hours to fill the tank and for me to pick up a snack, and we were home before 1 am.

I hope that if you were not able to go to one of the concerts in the tour, this report gave you an idea of what it was like and gave you a little taste of the thrill.

Thanks for the report! We'll be seeing the show a week from today in Chicago!!! It was my kids "big" Christmas gift, and to make up for the fact that DH and I are going to WDW without them next month!

Solgent, it sounds like your girls had a really great time and glad you received easy directions for the drive home. I should check if they are coming our way because I'm pretty sure my DD13 would love to go.

Thanks for taking the time to share your report. :thumbsup2
