Hey everyone,

I went for a check up today and finally my blood pressure is under control and I have lost some weight, but my Dr. wants to put me on a water pill. Which is fine I was on it before, but when I went to fill it today....holy moly for 30 pills it was $125!!! I told them that I can't afford it and came home wondering what I should do. The woman at the Dr.'s office said it might be a little expensive and I could take on that was over the counter. I told her it shouldn't be that bad now.... I have insurance HAHAHAHAHA yeah right.

Any ideas?

Call your MD and tell them you can't sfford the Rx and what can you do instead.

For a diuretic my DH has always taken hyrdrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), either as a single pill or in combination with another of his blood pressure medications. It is a generic and you can get 30 pills for $4 at Target. You could ask your MD if something like that would work in your situation.

As mentioned there are cheap water pills out there like HCTZ. Call your doctor's office, tell them there's no way you can afford that and is there something with a generic you can take instead. $125 is ridiculous for a water pill, if you don't mind, what were you prescribed?

did you ask the pharmacy clerk if it was run through your insurance? If so, maybe the pharmacist can give you names of similiar drugs and you can check with your insurance (or check your drug benefit info) on which choice is less expensive. Then you can call your dr office and see if you can get a presciption for the less $$ out of pocket drug.
(what is your water pill?)

That's the one I take too, and at Wal-Mart I get a 3-month supply for $10.

I would definitly call your doctor and ask him about it. $125 for a one month supply of a water pill sure seems high to me.

Diuretics are usually pretty cheap.

Ask for a generic. They are usually only a few bucks.

Definitely call the doctor as you should be able to get something to do the job for $4.

I've been prescribed a "water pill" for reasons other than use as a diuretic. My script costs $70, with a prescription plan, at Rite Aid for one month (60 pills) and through Medco mail order it's about $150 for 3 months (180 pills). Unfortunately my dosage is not on Walmart's $4 prescription list.

can you double up or cut it in half? I once had to take a very expensive antibiotic well the dr prescribed me a very high dose of one pill at a time.. the pharm called the dr and was allowed to prescribe me 2 1/2dose pills at a time.. because the dosage was lower and I was getting "bulk" pills the expensive med became a $15 dollar med instead of 150$ med!

I don't think so, but I could ask when I see the Dr. again. Each pill is 100 mg. The 25 mg is $4 at Walmart, and actually would save me a lot, but do I want to take 4 pills twice a day?

See what strength the pills come in.. it might save you some money! :thumbsup2 if they come in 50mg you'd be set!

I took this same one too and if you have the Dr do a 90 day supply it is cheap. :thumbsup2
