Today my mom says i need to sell my drums and at first whe asked she said becasue your bad which i replyed with then help me pay for the lessons i've been asking for for well 3 years. Then she says you only want them for a boy...NO MOM I want to play drums. Then she says no your not playing them they are not a girl instrument. Well then what in the world is a girl instrument. I don't like flutes and stuff i like loud drums. I just think its terrible that people view instruments as being one gendered only...It makes me really really upset actualy.

That kind of stuff really pisses me off. Like you said, what is classified as a "Girl" instrument? Playing an instument allows you to express your self and its something you really enjoy, why the HELL would someone try and take that away from you. Im not sure about anyone else, but if someone took my guitar away I would damn near die. Tell her to check out Skillet, Jen is an AMAZING drummer, plus she is cute :).

Its really gotten to far though. First my guitar got taken away which I was told drums would be okay and lessons would be provided...Well here i am no drum lessons and having to sell them...

My mom thinks i'll get $50 for them...

HELLO mom the cymbals alone were almost $300 and the drum kit was on sale for $600.

Honestly, Its absolutly no question for me. I would NOT get rid of them! I know your mom is the leader of the house but try and make her understand that this is something USEFULL not a waste of space like video games.

Wow I cant believe I just said that...

I tried to convince her...but she just stormed off to her room. GAH

Did you pay for them?
Not saying disobey your parents, BUT I know if I had paid for them and were taking lessons I would absolutely not sell them. Or if they were a gift. Whoever bought them, if I wanted to play them, I'd keep them. Maybe you should tell your mom you really want to continue playing?

If they bought them for you, they should expect that you would play them.

I bought them...After I traded in my guitar...

You paid for them, I wouldn't sell them. I don't think I would've even traded in my guitar in the first place. That would really really bug me. Maybe give your mom time to cool down and talk to her about it tomorrow.

maybe...but really even when i had someone offer free lessons she still said no. And it wasn't like it was some creppy stranger either. the guy was in my brothers band.

Well, then tell your mother all guys that play the flute must be gay.

my best friend is in an international indoor drumline. she plays synth.

instruments aren't sex based.

thats what i told my mom...She's all for me being in drum line but sadly i can't make it on my schools becasue i have no experience!

If you bought them then I wouldnt get rid of them.

Try telling her that you would be in drum line at school if she would pay for lessons.

I'm really sorry about that  since you bought them you should be able to keep them. And your mom should get a clue and look around her! People everywhere are playing every instrument! Instruments aren't sex based. And I think that you should tell your mom that it's legally your property and therefore she can't force you to give it away

I'm reallly sorry. It sounds like your kind of stuck here. What I would do is just one day bring your mom over to the computer and show her pictures of people like Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart, Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hayley from Paramore, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and anyone else like that. I hope you get to keep your drums.

Tell her about Meg White! She drums for the White Stripes and she's my favorite drummer!

My mom's cooled down about it now. Hopefully she doesn't bring it up again...
