I have returned worn shoes one time. This time last year I bought a pair of shoes to wear to my DD's high school graduation. They hurt my foot so much in my very brief walk--my DH dropped us off 1/2 block from the entrance and picked us up about a block away, so I hardly walked in the shoes. They literally cut into my foot. I returned them to Kohl's and the lady started to argue, but I held my ground on that one. I explained how little I wore them and what they did to my foot. In general, though, I've been able to tell if shoes are ok when wearing them around my house and I would either return them without wearing them outside or I'd take the loss.

I have done this as well. But I didn't do it to try and "save" money dishonestly (yes I am a Goody Two Shoes with a capital G!).

The shoe I purchased caused such immense pain that it had to be a defect and upon further inspection of the shoe, they were indeed defective. I stood my ground and got my money back.

I don't do the switcharoo thing though. There are other stores that have much more generous price adjustment policies.

ETA: I love the store where I get my running shoes--I have worn shoes on wet roads that ended up not being good for me and they swap them out. They are very lenient b/c you can't run well with a shoe that hurts you and sometimes this will not be known unless you hit the road running. I had a pair that I ran 8 miles in and returned it. If they are sellable--they mark them down. If not, they return to vendor for credit. They help find a shoe that is appropriate for you and sometimes their suggestions just do not work out. LOVE this shoe store!
