Am I the only one who refuses to allow their vet to take their pets (alone) into the back for routine treatments?

Vet I've used for 15 years knows I'm coming with them. Every once in a while I have to take one of my dogs when he's (my reg vet) not there and the Vet on duty tells me I can't go back with them. I tell them "I go where my dogs go".

I have never heard of this. Every vet I go to insists you remain with your animal.

I would never let them take my pet without me being there.

My regular vet doesn't do that. We go in back with our pets. Once we had to take our male mastiff to the emergency vet. We were told OK we'll take him from here and I was like, take him where? I told them he wasn't going to go anywhere with them if I wasn't with him, literally.

My dog won't budge without me and hes 180 lbs. I handed over the leash and Brutus dug in. It looked like he would have to be dragged! The vet quickly said OK mom you come too. Yeah, good thinking!

Every vet I've been to but one will have the owners come back. The only time they don't is the particular vet where I take my bird to get trimmed. I don't mind, I don't want to hear her squawking like she's going to die just because she's getting her toenails filed or her wings trimmed. She has this horrible squawk when she's getting handled.

I go in with Kitty. I'd totally trust the vet alone with her, though...it's just set up so that owners (and care-takers) go in with the animal.

Some vets we have been to take them in the back. Like when our dog Butters got a metal flake in his eye. He took him back there without me to get it out.

Current vet we have has not yet.

I love my vet. Dog loves the vet & the vet techs. Vet and Vet tech love dog.

My 70 pound baby (11 years old) goes to the vet on a pretty regular basis - due to his anal glands. Mom and vet tech get to hold dog during the "friendly" part of the exam.

I have gotten to know the vet, and obviously really like him. I just feel better if I am there.

And, I think my dog is more relaxed if I am there. And...I follow vet's-directions very well!

I have rarely ever had a vet take my dogs to the back. The only times it has ever happened is when they might need to do something like a test for a minute or two or when I have had my dog's ear hairs plucked. Other than that they always do everything right there in the room with me in there too.

Well there is an on stage and a backstage essentially. Backstage is x-rays, lab work, surgery or the animal that got hit by a car and was rushed in. Some animals are more relaxed with an owner there but you very well may be in the minority at that office. People think that cooing and telling their animal that things are going to be okay when someone has their finger up their rear, but really it just makes the animal more anxious for that time and the next.

It's one thing to be in the exam room but it's obviously another if the dog has to have a procedure done, like a piece of metal flake in it's eye!

They take Rink in the back to weigh him, then bring him back in.

I've never had a vet take my animals back without me. That's weird. How can you tell them what's going on if you're not there?

They did take the puppy out to weigh him, but that's it.

I had the dumbest vet tech one day...my elderly dog got scratched in the eye by a cat so I took her to the vet. The vet tech had eye drops in his hand and without telling me what he was doing started to walk towards the dog. This girl had a MAJOR fear of vets and would bite. I said, "uh...she WILL bite you, so if you intend to put those drops in her eye you better get a muzzle first". She may have been 14 years old and sweet looking, but she didn't do well with medical things so she had to be muzzled..

It actually makes perfect sense to me. Always remember that pets don't comprehend things like we do. So when a procedure is being done, your animal isn't thinking "gee, I'm glad mommy is here for me." They are thinking "why is mommy DOING this to me?" It may depend on the pet - my doxie gets real skittish at the vet and she takes him away so that he doesn't associate anything that's happening with ME. In otherwords, SHE wants to be the bad guy rather than me.

Plus, like another poster said, your comforting your pet doesn't work that way at all. To the animal, you are reinforcing and praising their fearful response.

I have recently had to give my kitten fluids and other injections. I am not happy that she has to associate these uncomfortable situations with my smell and touch.

Not for routine things. But, I work for a vet and if we are having trouble with your dog for a nail trim, we will take it in the back. Sometimes they do better without you there.

If we have to take xrays-you are not permitted in the back. Just the rules.
We don't have enough lead aprons for everyone.

I would expect them to take the animal for actual procedures because I don't need to be there for those, but just for the routine exam would be weird. It's not like the dog can say, "well, lately I've had some trouble getting up and down the stairs!"

The only time my dog went in the back without me was when she was spayed. I can't imagine the vet needing to take her anywhere during a routine visit. The scale is in the waiting room and she hops on when we get there. All shots, nail trimming, exams are done in the exam room.

Even when I had to take her to the animal ER, I carried her with me from room to room. She was never out of my sight and they never asked for her to be.

With our vet..they let us all go to the exam room. My dog has butt problems..and has to get her anal glands expressed a lot..they take her to the back stating it gets to be very smelly..I have no problem with that. All exams and everything else is done in exam room.

I take my dogs to a walk in clinic for shots(they only do shots at these places on weekends)Shots are given right in front of owner, no hiding in these walk in clinics.

For those who dont like the go in back thing, is it because you are afraid they are going to really do what is needed? Or do you think they will harm pets?
