I was so looking forward to Ken Follet's new book, Fall of Giants so imagine my distress when I logged on to Amazon and discovered the cost is $19.99!! :faint: Ah well, I refuse to pay that much for any book so I guess I will check Costco and/or wait for it to come down in price. I can put my name on the library list but I may be old and gray before it gets to me!

DH and I talked about how Amazon would hook us and then gradually raise prices. I really hope it doesn't sell well in Kindle form so Amazon will see the error of its ways, but somehow I don't think so.

Unfortunately from what I understand its not amazon determining the prices, its the publishers...sad but true. With that being said there are SO MANY free and very inexpensive books that keep me occupied, and I am now reading many other authors I would have never known had it not been for my Kindle, so I will keep with it and continue to enjoy my Kindle!!!

Amazon isn't setting the prices. If you look at the tiny print, it will say "price determined by publisher" or something like that.

As previous posters have mentioned the prices are determined by the publishers. Jeff Lindsay who is the author of the Dexter books told fans at a convention sometime back that he was glad that the Kindle versions of his books were being sold at reasonable prices set by his publisher.

The new Danielle Steele book is close to $14.00. Her last one was $9.99.
I can wait until it comes down in price or comes out in paperback.

The Steel book will likely drop to $9.99 pretty soon. It is a Random House book so Amazon will be allowed to discount it. I expect to see it drop within a week and thankfully it is supposed to be much better than her last couple of books.

The publishers want to cash in on the popularity of e-readers.

I have a Sony and I found the same thing. I wanted a book when it came out but it was $14.99, within a month it went down to $9.99. I still didn't want to pay that much and continued to read books I downloaded for free or really inexpensively (under $3). I finally bought the book the other day for $7.99. Keep watching. It will go down.

I saw that and thought it was expensive but it's $25 at Target....

Give it a few months. The price will drop.

I wondered if the e-books would get to be as expensive as real books. It looks like they're going in that direction.

I have a bunch of books on my Nook's wish list, I'm just waiting for the prices to drop before I buy them. I really don't see why electronic books cost so much but I'm willing to wait for the prices to come down. Does Kindle have a wish list option? If so just add it and watch for the price to drop.

No they don't. They want the e-readers gone because they are afraid that will completely replace hardbound books which make the most money.

My new Kindle died on me today. :( I guess a software update was automatically downloaded and it got corrupted. But customer service is AMAZING. They are sending me a replacement right away.

So far I haven't paid more than $9.99 for a book. Most books I have downloaded have been free. :)

I compare it to first run movies. If you have to see it now you pay more. Or you wait for it to hit netflix or comes out on DVD.

This is one convenience of the Sony Reader. You can access libraries and download books free.

Maybe she actually wrote her newest book!!;)
