My parents have a big five-acre yard, and in the back there's a fire pit, where my dad used to burn trash. A few years ago he was told he couldn't do that anymore, and as far as I know he hasn't. Until tonight.

He had cut down some branches, and had taken them, as well as some trash, out to burn. I didn't even realize he had been bruning anything until after I smelled smoke, and heard sirens, which was then followed by cops and firemen coming to the house. My neighbors had called 911, thinking that a house was on fire. :rolleyes1

Long story short, my dad acted all "I didn't know I could burn it here," and didn't get in any trouble. He didn't even get fined. What upsets me is he had, (unknown to me,) that he had the dog out by the fire pit with him, and when I heard that I had to make sure the dog was okay.

It was really smoky outside though, and there was ash flying around everywhere, and I only went right outside the door.

My mom wasn't home when all of this was going on, and when she got home, she wasn't mad at my dad, she was mad at the neighbors for not minding their own business, and the cops for bothering a fire that was "in control." :sad2:

Oh, and also, my dad wasn't exactly sober. He wasn't completely drunk, but he had had a couple of beers at this point.

Depending on the weather (assuming you aren't in burn ban because of drought) burning things in a fire pit isn't inherently dangerous. So it is likely your dog was perfectly fine, if a bit smokey smelling afterwards. Or at least in the short term it's not dangerous. I would think breathing in that smoke can't be great for you long term.
But if it is illegal in your area (which it apparently is since your dad has been told to stop doing it) then, of course, I don't think your dad should have burned anything.
I know we have a fire pit and we burn branches, garden debris, and other stuff like that in it all the time when we aren't in a burn ban because of the weather. We are in one right now though, aren't even allowed to use the grill outside right now.

Whenever we have a patio fire, in the little fire pit, we mist the two dogs with the hose. Even though one usualy scurries back inside. He is afraid of everything....

This happened once to us but it legal in our city heres the story

OK so we didnt know if it was legal or not to have a firepit in your back yard and burn things so we called down to the FireStation to ask them and they said it was tottaly leagal and to go ahead and do... so my dad put wood in the firepit and we were having the fire. Well our neighbor who eaves drop on our family due to shes like that and heard it was legal but since she is rude and has nothing else to do with her life calls 911 and makes up this story and they come out to our house and were like this is tottally fine and legal they just called about it. Then they say your neighbors next door called which they were out on there deck when we made the phone call and heard it was tottally fine since my dad talks loud when we started to do it called 911 so my dad wasnt very happy at all because they just called to try to get us in trouble but that if it illeagle where you live should not happen. If the neighbor thought it was a true fire would call. So yes there neighbor did the right thing

So, did you WANT your Dad fined?!:confused3 We have a fire pit in our back yard and we use it all the time. You don't seem to LIKE your father AT ALL, you already had issues with him using your "discount" at the place you work.

Why do you live with your parents if you loathe them so much?:confused3

not trying to be rude but that story was hard for me to understand,It is just a big run on sentence. Do you think you could edit in some punctuation so it would be easier to read?

Is this one of David Hasselhoffs girls :lmao:

I wanted to read this story too, but it's difficult to read as it's written now. I'm probably showing my age, but maybe it's easier for the younger folks to read this writing style than old folks like me. I'ld love to try again with some edits.

LOL, everytime my FIL builds a fire inhis back yard, he just keeps some hot dogs cooking over it. It becomes perfectly legal at that point.

Why on earth do you want your dad fined? It seems to me that is your primary gripe. Pretty pathetic, imo. If you find him and his actions so reprehensible, move out.

I suspect your dog would have left the general area, had breathing been an issue. 5 acres is plenty of space.

::yes::

Seriously, OP, you seem to have absolutely no respect for your parents. Why don't you save yourself some drama and get your own place?

Great advice. OP please follow it.

I totally hate burning garbage, not only is the stench nasty, its one of the worst things you can do to the enviroment,

Having a small fire in pit and roasting a hot dog is one thing, but if your told not to burn trash, then you shouldnt,

Yes you should stick up for your parents, but her dad was wrong here and if everyone here would read about how bad burning trash is for the enviroment they would have reported him too.

I just hate burning garbage with a passion:mad: , if it were my dad i'd been out there with the water hose long before the neighbors got a whiff.

I agree. :thumbsup2

OP, you absolutely kill me. :sad2: Get off the drama llama and get your own place.

Okay first of all I don't loathe my parents. When he was using my discount for stuff for personal use, I was fine with it. It was when he started using the discount for his friends, and his office, which isn't allowed by company rules, that I had a problem with it.

And I didn't "want" him fined. I just think it's BS that he had a fire, and it was big because you could see it a road away, and he knew he wasn't supposed to use the pit anymore. I mean it's a big pit, and it's always been there, and this is the first time in years it's been used as far as I know. It's just I know he knows he was doing something he shouldn't have been, (the same with the discount,) and he doesn't see anything wrong with it. He's one of those people that the rules don't apply too.

So since it's my dad I'm supposed to be okay with him breaking the rules, and the law, just because I live with him?

All I said was "he didn't even get fined." How is that saying I wanted him to be fined? :confused3

Thank you. Everyone else here seems to be flaming me because I think it's wrong that my dad broke the law.

And to be clear, this wasn't a litte BBQ thing going on. This is like at least a ten-foot wide fire pit, and people could see the flames from the next road over.
