Weird Request for 1BR Section of Non-Dedicated 2BR

So, for our stay in January 2022, we had wanted 4 nights in 1BR but because of availability, we're in 1BR 3 nights and 2BR one night. We're on a waitlist for the 1BR for the 4th night, but I have to bank points by Nov 30, so it's not looking hopeful.

My question is this -- should I call and request a 1BR that's part on a non-dedicated 2BR? My thinking is at least we won't physically have to move on our 4th night.

The stay is actually at Vero Beach, but I'm thinking this question could apply to any DVC resort.

There are no dedicated 1-bedroom units at Vero Beach, they are all part of 2-bedroom lock-offs. Your 2-bedroom reservation needs to be for a lock-off, if not you will definitely have to move.

If the 2 bedroom is a lock off, then certainly put in a request to see if it can be kept so you are not moving rooms. However, because the studio portion of the 2 bedroom you have booked may need a cleaning, they still may require you to leave the 1 bedroom part and come back after check in. There have been reports of that over the years.

If you are booked in a dedicated 2 bedroom, then you won't have any choice but to move.

Look at your reservation, if it says two bedroom, it’s dedicated.

Because BWV only has lock offs, what you are asking could apply to that resort.


I don’t think we know how many of BWV’s units are saved for two bedrooms. Maybe none? Maybe they actually will book all studios, one bedrooms and two bedrooms, until they run out of ability to actually book a two bedroom. This is a “problem “ for me at BWV, that I didn’t realize when we bought in 2003. Recently, I have not been able to get a two bedroom there during December even during the 11-8 months home priority period.

In Vero, unlike at BWV, they actually have dedicated AND lock off two bedrooms.

What's been seen since the online booking tool came about is that they do not hold back 2BR lock-off inventory at locations that only have 2BR lockoffs. If you see a 2BR lockoff you'll also see a 1BR and a studio available too. And from what I've seen it's the same everywhere in regards to 2BR lockoffs.

ie - if the 1BR was waitlisted 1st then it would go to them.

I think it depends on the date and waitlists and whose request was first. So, if you are on the waitlist for 1 night in a 1 bedroom, and someone else is on the waitlist for the 2 bedroom lock off, I think they will go with whomever got on the waitlist first. Without that, those wanting the 1 bedroom would never get it.

Ok, this is very relevant info for my question. I am traveling with neighbor friends. He currently has a studio booked for his home resort for 8 nights. We have a 1 br booked for our home resort for 5 nights. They arrive 3 days before us. We were talking about at the 7 month mark booking a 2br lockoff and saving points between us (we have the logistics of a points transfer figured out to do it). So....my question (since BWV is one of the resorts we are considering) if the first 3 days he had a studio, and then we booked the 2br on his 4th day there and our reservations are "linked" with Member services....would he be able to stay in that studio for the entire trip and not have to move rooms. Like he has the studio part ahead of time....and when we arrive they just add the 1br next door and we share the whole 2br lockoff?

This is all contingent on availability at 7 months, and we are a few weeks from there, but if the availability is there,can they do this?

It would be like any request so not guaranteed. Plus at BWV there are both dedicated studios and 1BR's so if he were placed in one of those it wouldn't be possible. Whether you're able to rebook to a 2BR lockoff or not you still could have DVC put a "traveling with" note on both reservations and to request to be next to each other. And then your friend should follow up with the front desk at check in and outline what you are hoping to have happen.

And it depends on when the guests assigned to the 1 bedroom side check out. They may not be checking out the day your 2B reservation begins.

I mean, yes you are correct, but in theory, if they planned it out someone is checking out of a 1 br that day......so they would have to plan those rooms ahead of time. No idea what the scheduler looks like for that kind of stuff (nor do I want that job) but we have traveled together in the past. We have never had a problem getting rooms across from each other or in the same building on the same floor (at like SSR or something). Our kids are good friends....and traveling together when kids get along......parents have a better time too

We have traveled with people too and several times not been close or even the same floor. But, getting rooms close is a bit easier than those who want to stay in a room that is connected.

But, its not just the person checking out of a 1 bedroom that would be needed, it would also mean that other people booked in a 2 bedroom during the time you are there have two rooms open up next to each other. They may need that studio part a few days later so that another family can get a 2 bedroom in a different part of the resort.

It really is a game of chess. But, as mentioned, all you can do is request, and when the friend checks in, ask if things have been secured that way. If they have not, its possible they can change it then!

I resemble that remark Couple of years ago at AKV had a 1 br. booked for 3 or 4 days followed by a 2 br. for 7 more days. Noted ongoing reservation beforehand, asked at desk on check in if we could stay in same 1 br. & just add studio next door & were told no. Ran down to desk before packing up on the morning of first stay check out to see if we could just stay in original 1 br. & add studio next door - told no again, packed up, schlepped our luggage down to bell services, went off to a park, got our text & learned that we were back in our original 1 br. + the studio next door - so collected our luggage from bell services & schlepped it back to our original villa.
Based on my experience I’d assume that OP’s friends would have to pack up mid stay & move (or not move as in my case) and be pleasantly surprised if they got to stay put.
