weird pizza toppings

We recently found a locally owned mom and pop pizza place that is delicious. The only problem is that for some reason they put turkey on a lot of their pizza combos.

What's the weirdest pizza topping(s) you've seen/eaten?

A local place near us has cream cheese. It’s become a staple in our family.

I guess one person's weird topping is another person's normal. I guess pineapple, anchovy, garlic, etc. can gross some people out. Living in California I kind of marvel that some people think that all the weird combos at California Pizza Kitchen are somehow really "California pizza".

We have a local place (Cheeseboard Pizza in Berkeley) that does a single pizza every day. Some of what they put on can seem strange. I've seen lots of different things, including potatoes, peaches, pine nuts, salsa, lemon zest, broccolini, etc. Some pizzas get arugula sprinkled on top. I got thrown for a loop the time they had tomato sauce. The cheeses can be really exotic too, like bleu, ricotta, or feta.

But one thing [edit] I'll never try is durian pizza. This is a thing in certain parts of Asia like Malaysia.

The broccoli pizza in Inside Out was inspired by Arizmendi Bakery in Emeryville. It's based off of the Cheeseboard model. I heard they didn't have a broccoli pizza before, but did one to commemorate the pizza in the movie.

Scrambled eggs is the strangest I've seen.

My husband lived in Japan for a year last year and he said pizzas always had carrots or corn on them.

Hands down the winner for me is bananas on a regular, not dessert, pizza (which was loaded with other toppings). Saw that in Germany. The guy did seem to be enjoying his pizza, though.

Pizza places in rural Ireland routinely add canned corn. IME, it comes standard on every pizza unless you tell them NOT to include it.

DH & I have a tradition of seeking out local pizza joints when we travel in the US; the quirkier the better. IME, California *does* have some really odd varieties available. However, I will grant that the one thing I really enjoyed about pizza joints in California was the wide variety of flavored crusts that we encountered; lots of herbed breads that were excellent.

I often put roasted veggies on my pizza at make your own type places. Even Brussels sprouts. Also, fig sauce. That would have seemed weird to me years ago.

I'm trying to find some photos of Cheeseboard Pizza.

This one is peach with bleu cheese and arugula on top.

Sometime they come with a squeeze of lime.

Can't remember where I had it, but I tried some Crab Rangoon pizza. Exactly would you'd expect: The cream cheese filling from Crab Rangoon on the pizza. It was pretty good, but I think it's best to stick with the standard toppings. Disclaimer: I like anchovies on pizza.

IMO, pizza is cheese sauce on a dough crust with acceptable toppings of mushroom, pepperoni or sausage. Anything else and you're making a sandwich.

In Chicago, I don't know why they call lasagna, pizza, LOL.

They don't.It's only one variation of many.

I think anything goes on pizza. We have a local place - QC Pizza - that likes to do "different ones"....their dill pickle one went viral, but their pizzas as of late have been lettuce wrap, jalapeno popper, chicken wild rice, lobster roll, etc.

I love arugula on pizza - with some lemon.

Sauerkraut is a big one around here - Mn style pizza with good sausage and some kraut.

On Disney cruise line, Palo used to have a grapes and feta pizza. ( not sure if it is still on the menu)

ETA: Double checked it was grapes and gargonzola.

I thought Cici’s had some unique toppings. I liked their cheeseburger pizza with cheese sauce, burger, onion, pickles, ketchup and mustard. They don’t make it anymore.



They also have a Mac and Cheese pizza.

I know lettuce isn't necessary weird, because it's a staple of "taco pizza", but I don't like it. Spinach or arugula is fine, but iceberg lettuce, ick.

That's how they made pizza in rural Russia, too. The sauce was a BBQ sauce and there was ham and corn on the pizza. It wasn't good, but at least we tried it. We were sick of eating the food in the hotel's cafe (they served bread with every meal, but only got a delivery once a week) and cake. The cakes were beautifully decorated and to keep them moist longer, they ground up walnuts into the cake. They tasted good, but we ate a lot of cake because there wasn't much else that was good until we got to Moscow.

A different type of pizza that I love has ricotta cheese, pulled BBQ pork and fig jam on it with arugula on top. The flavors sing on the crust.

My husband and I got a 1/2 sausage (him) , 1/2 grape & gorgonzola (me) pizza. It's really pretty good.

I love ricotta on pizza -- who knew I was being exotic!
Those cheeses are standard 'other' cheeses you can get on pizza in my neck of the woods in MD. I'm pretty sure my husbands has had feta on his.

I don't remember banana in Germany but I do remember them bringing out the pizza to your table and cracking an egg over it before slicing it.
