My Skye Terrier-mix has this weird-looking thing growing on her back between her should blades. It reminds me of those things that baked potatoes grow if you wait too long to use them.

I noticed the place a couple of weeks ago- right before we left for vacation. I thought at first that she had a tick, so I hunted through her hair to find it, but it was just something sticking out of her skin. I thought I'd just kind of watch it and maybe it would be gone by the time we got back from WDW. Well, the derned thing has grown (gotten taller), so we will take her to the vets in the morning.

I wasn't too worried about it, but then a coworker said she hopes it is not cancer. I am so worried now :sad2:

Has anybody ever had anything weird like that on their dog? Please pray for my sweet little Honey.....

It is sort of squishy and can you move it around? It is most likely a lipoma or fatty growth and nothing to worry about. One of our labs has one on her side. We had it tested but it is nothing and would be more difficult to remove than leave.

Have the vet look at it but don't worry too much.

If it's actually coming out of the skin and not covered by the skin (I hope this makes sense) it could be the doggy version of a pimple (zit). My golden retriever had one and at his check up a number of years ago I asked about it as it appeared to be getting larger and the vet said that's what it was. He did push out the white stuff and then had me put antibiotic cream on it for a couple of weeks. But then he got another one on the top of his head. That one we just let go and it didn't seem to get any larger. It was still the size when he passed away a couple of months ago.

He also had the fatty tumors all over his body - these were alway under the skin though. Poor guy - he was just one big lumpy mess. But what a sweetie.

Thanks, guys! I'm trying not to freak out to much, but I'm such a worry-wart when it comes to my kids and my dogs.

It is actually growing out of the skin. It really does look like she's sprouting a potato. Its really gross.

I'll try not to worry too much...........

KJ Luvs Pluto- sorry to hear about your furbaby.......

My dog has the same thing. He's 11 yrs old and they are all over his body. it's disgusting. The vet said as long as they stay pink we have nothing to worry about.

Histocytoma? My dog has one on his muzzle. It's pretty fugly. The vet gave it a cortisone shot, but it didn't help. They are almost always benign, but we will probably have it removed soon. GL!

Our basset hound had something like that growing off the top of her head.
Took her to the vet, who immediately said it is not cancer. It was a lipoma. They shaved the spot, gave her a local injection and then with a scalpel she cut it off.
When it was shaved and we could see the whole thing it looked like a red stalk
growing out of her head.

She is just fine now and it has not come back.

Update- the vet said it was a wart. He said it would not spread and might go away on its own. He said I can put hydrogen peroxide on it once per day followed by some aloe vera. If it hasn't gone away in a month, he said to call them.

So thank the Lord it wasn't cancerous. I was so worried for my sweet girl.

Thanks, Everybody!
