Has anyone ever not added a member of their family to the dining plan because they were only staying with them in the unit for a day or two? We have a kid who may spend just a couple of nights with us and then go off to stay with a friend. We'd like to do the Dining Plan, but he won't be with us for most of the vacation so it would be a waste of money to put him on it. Will Disney allow this?

No, if he is staying with you for any night, he must be listed on the Reservation, and must pay the Dining Plan, as per Disney policy. The Dining Plan was designed (and operated by) the cash reservations arm of Disney, and most of their clients do not have guests arriving and departing during a trip. Plus imagine how people would abuse the system if they allowed this. It really wasn't designed with DVC in mind.

If the rules of the plan don't work for you this trip, then it may simply be best to not have the DDP on this trip.

Also a reminder to all who may be tempted to suggest work arounds, suggesting/advocating ways to bypass published and established Disney/DVC policies is not allowed on the DIS.

As Chuck said, you must have him on the plan. Having said that, you will be allowed to use the credits for the days he is not there. It might be a great opportunity for you to do some of the signature meals.

Good thinking!
