Weight limit on umbrella strollers?

While looking online for cheap umbrella strollers to take to WDW for my 4 1/2 yo DS, I noticed most have a 40 lb. weight limit. My DS is about 45 lbs. I didn't want to buy something expensive since he will only need it for Disney, but what do all you parents use for older kids? I don't want to rent a stroller b/c I do think he'll fall asleep, and the plastic doesn't look very comfortable.

Sorry, no advice, but I am looking for the same thing... my son is 5 yrs. old, 45 inches tall and about 50 pounds. He definatly needs a stroller for the trip. He seems too big for the umbrella strollers, but I don't want to rent a stroller every day either.

I know that many jogging strollers are designed for older children. I know there are other strollers out there that are as well, but they cost more money.

However, I looked FOREVER to find a good used jogging stroller for ds to use. At least in our area, they are in high demand. If you bought a macleran or another expensive stroller, I know they sell very good on ebay. Maybe you could consider spending 75-100 bucks on a stroller, and then selling it for 40-65 after your trip? Your children would be comfortable, and you would have only spent about 50 bucks tops?

Hi! I have a 2 1/2 and a 6 year old. We went to WDW back in March of 04... Granted my then 1 year old was in the umbrella most of time, but on ocassion when he was out streching his legs - DS then 5 was in it - It worked just fine.... didn't necessarily steer as well as when younger brother was in it, but worked OK. Even if they are not in it a majority of time, it can be convenient for those moments of weakness, nap time, or when you need to move faster than those little legs can handle. Not to mention a great coat rack. I am in NH an they sell for less than $30 at Wal-Mart. They are also great and compact for traveling, especially great in the airport to boot. Those bigger strollers are easier to steer, however bigger and bulkier, they are a big item to check if flying or may take up valuable cargo space if driving. We also have the jogger style strollers but find them too long for crowded areas... seem to run a lot of ankles over... You wouldn't believe the number of umbrella strollers at the parks, be sure to have something that sets yours apart from others.. there tends to be seas of those suckers outside of the rides in the stroller parking section. DD will be 6 1/2 when we go to WDW in Dec. We are going to use an umbrella stroller for her. She is 42 pounds, so she's over the weight limit, but I don't think it will be a problem. We used it for local amusement parks, etc. this summer and she was fine in it.

I just went to K-mart yesturday and bought a pooh umbrella stroller for $13 my 4 year old fits in it great and she is 44" tall and weights 46 lbs. It is very easy to stear. Hope this helps and have a great trip.

I have the Chico umbrella stroller and it works great.My daughter is also 41/2 and I use this one all the time. I have taken it to Disney and will be again this dec. My sister also has this one for her 4-1/2 yr old son and has taken it to disney.It is very lightweight(I think 11 pds) has a strap that is easy to put over your shoulder to carry on the buses and such and has tall handles so me and my husband can also push her without our backs hurting.It has a small basket undereneath and I put the hooks on it to hold packages and things.I have put alot of extra weight on it using those hooks and it has held up fine under all that weight.I researched alot of strollers when I was going to Disney last year and decided on this one and have only used it since.I got it at Babies r us for 45 bucks.I have seen them on line for around 40-50 dollars.It comes in red or blue and has a small canopy on it.This is the only thing that is not good for my daughter cause she is to tall so it sits close to the top of her head and she doesn't like it so I took it off-very easy the fabric slides off the 2 metal arms.I highly recommend this stroller over any of those hundred plus stroller especially because our kids won't be in them too much longer!!

I got an umbrella stroller at a garage sale for $5.00 and we used it in May for our son who weighs 45lb and is 6 years old. Because he is slightly autistic, he needed to feel safe in a very loud and busy park. We used it the entire time when he was tired of walking or just needed that extra "hug of comfort" an umbrella stroller gives. It was also great for holding snacks, drinks, our misting fan, etc. Because he was over the weight limit, it only lasted through the week, (tires gave out) but for $5 and 5 days at Disney, it was worth it. I wouldn't have gone without it.

I've found the cheap umbrella strollers are generally fine even up to 50 lbs or so...beyond that, the rentals really are the best option if you're not going to buy a specialty stroller for larger kids.

We do have a Maclaren that is rated to 45 lbs....but we bought it knowing we'd get long term use out of it. For one trip it wouldn't be worth it. As it is we've had it for 5 years and will probably use it for another 2 or 3 years.

Just thought I would point out that according to Maclaren.com FAQ their strollers do go up to 55lbs.

How long can I use my buggy—up until what age and/or weight?
Maclaren buggies are designed and tested to hold up to a 55lb child; the twins are tested to hold up to 55 pounds each side. Most children determine at what age they no longer want to be in a buggy—some children want to walk when they’re 2, others when they’re 5. We suggest you let your child guide the usage of your buggy, while keeping within the weight limit.

We actually bought a Kidco LS2000 stroller that is rated up to 50lbs. I figured even if ds outgrows the need for it around home we will still be using it for our trips to WDW so it was worth getting one that was a little nicer with a higher weight limit. We bought the Kidco off of ebay and got a fairly good deal on it.

DD5 was slightly over 40 pounds when we went in April. I bought a $10 umbrella stroller at WalMart assuming if we wore it out we'd pitch it. We used it constantly all week for everything from a luggage cart at the airport (probably held ~100 pounds) to getting around the resort and parks. It held up just fine and we plan to take it again in early 2006.

DD thought I was nuts for expecting her to ride in a BABY stroller- she hadn't used one in years!!! However, when we got to WDW she never wanted to get out. We stayed at POR and the cheap stroller probably saved TONS of whining on the long walks to the bus stops and food court. A totally worthwhile investment!

I second the Chicco Caddy. We bought 2!!! DD's are 3 1/2 & 2yrs. Just went to DL and LOVE THE CHICCO CADDY!!! They fold up great, just a bit bigger than a smaller umbrella stroller. Yes they are about $50.00, but I would do it all over again. It has zippers in the back so the stroller reclines just enough if they fall a sleep and it has a great cover for the sun. I added a link so you can look at it. This is not were we bought ours, we got ours at Babies R Us.

Thanks all4fun! Our stroller is now over 5yo, so I probably just didn't remember the numbers right. I do recall that 5 years ago it was very hard to find a stroller that was rated for over 40lbs.....definitely pushed us into the high end stroller market. I think you can get a sturdy stroller much more reasonably now.
