Wedding Thread Spin Off - Black Dresses

Australian here - no issues with wearing black here. Pretty much white is the only No-no in my experience.

Not wearing black to a wedding is just a superstition. As the mother of the groom, I wore a black dress. Our son and daughter-in-law have been happily married for 15 years now and we have 3 beautiful granddaughters.

I would say black is fine for a night wedding. I would stay away from it for a summer, daytime wedding.

Yes, I had heard “no black for a wedding” before too but thought it was a superstition thing. That’s why I was surprised to see some post here that it’s considered an insult or snub where they live and not just a bad luck thing.

I got married on a Friday the 13th and would not have had any issue with guests wearing black.

I hadn't thought about this in years, but as a young adult my mother made me change clothes before visiting my grandparents. I was wearing a black sweater and my grandfather firmly believed black was for mourning so if he was still alive, I would not have worn black to any wedding he was going to be at. These days I'm more likely to wear black to a wedding than any other color.

My wedding dress was ivory. Light pink & light peach wedding dresses were also popular, when I go married. It's seems I only see white in windows now, but I haven't actually been in a bridal shop in decades to see if they sell other colors.

It's a lot easier to keep a stranglehold on just white dresses. A fancy dress in different colors could be for all sorts of occasions, how do they know to price gouge for a wedding?

This happens with a lot of other wedding related industries, too. Venues and vendors will charge more if they know it's for a wedding.
Like this makeup artist, for example.

Me too. Also not a first marriage and I was in my 50s. I'd looked for a dress, but couldn't find one I liked, so I just wore my favorite black dress with a black and maroon colored rose headpiece. My kids said I looked goth, but I was just trying to wear clothes I liked. It was winter, so dark colors looked fine.

In Downton Abbey, all the women wore different colors of wedding dresses, ivory, peach, other pastels, etc. The tradition of white wedding dresses hadn't come about back then.
