Wedding photos

Only the OP can gauge this, but also beware the 'friend' as well. I've had many friends on "budget" weddings who still expect the moon knowing that I just starting playing with my old Digital rebel four years ago. I had one bad experience where their own photographer screwed up the shots but I managed to get quite a few nice shots and my "friend" still expected me to get them the nice blow ups, etc... I simply gave them the CD of the finished/PP'ed product and told them to order their own pics from a site I recommended. I've had bride or grooms bug me constantly on whether I can do this or that or provide them with this or that....for free...."as a favor"

I'm also a partner in a DJ company that does close to 25 weddings a year and I often get asked to help out with wedding pictures. I make it a policy to ensure I'm not encroaching on any other "hired" photographer whenever I'm asked to help out. I even have them sign contracts in addition to the DJ contract to ensure they know exactly what they are getting. Contracts are very important...even for a "friend."

Weddings in general are a messy business. My #1 advice is to talk to your friend and make sure what they're expectations are. 90% of the time, they are different than what you might think, so its VERY important to ask. Someone posted some great links of lists of what pictures to take. Copy one of those and go over them w/ your friend to make sure those are the pictures they want. You also need to decide on how you will charge and who will provide the pictures.

Are you going to print them out and then give them the CD? Or are you going to just give them the CD? I ALWAYS provide a set of prints first from my favorite online printing company ( I use adoramapix.com) and then give them a CD. That will ensure that the pics are printed the way you want them to be printed and in good quality. The worst thing is to give them a CD and then they take them to CVS or Rite Aid and then they complain to you that the pictures came out lousy.

Try a few places to print pictures to make sure they do a good job. I've used adoramapix.com and mpix.com in the past and they've had great quality and fast service. Adorama even lets you set up an account that you can link people to so they can pick out their own photos and purchase the photos themselves. This makes it easier on you AND ensures that the photos are of good quality. You can be the best photographer in the world and take the best pictures, but if you get a BAD print shop, those photos are worthless.

Good luck and be sure to tell us how it went!

I shoot JPG Fine, I did the math and it's probably closer to 400/card.

really.. hm I guess I just figured you'd be shooting raw for something as important as a wedding..

:offtopic: Not meaning to highjack this thread but...pxlbarrel...the person asked for help and opinions on what to do and we all pitched in to help..none of us expect the person to do everything we said.

It is just weddings, even a second, third etc etc..tend to be highly emotionally charged, and many unrealistic expectations are present. I would hate to see this person unprepared for this duty they have accepted.

Now that being said if you go to your local Futureshop and I know you have a few to choose from in your area..there are some great deals on digital memory this week..once high speed CF card in particular is $24.00 CDN, a moderate speed Sony 4 g for $29.00 and if you really want performance and have a D300 or similar there is a 16g ExtremeIII CF 166x for $199.00 ..or better still go down the road in Richmond hill to the TigerDirect store and the memory cards there - CF style ( for reference only) 2 g for $18.99..:thumbsup2

Sooo..maybe that is not the $15.00 USD that Geoff_M is talking about, but it is close...

BTW..the 16G card Extreme III @ Tigerdirect is $249.99 so it pays to shop around...::yes::

If I weren't turning the whole take (minus the OOF images and other mistakes) over to the couple, and instead creating a custom select album for them, then it might be worth going RAW. But at 12mp, there's enough resolution for the sake of enlargements that JPG Fine is more than enough. They also aren't paying me enough for me to spend the time to PP every image into the JPG that they'll be given in the end. I do plenty of test shots, look at stuff mid-wedding, and such to know that I got stuff that's plenty usable.

It's been pretty easy to find SanDisk Extreme II 2gb CF's around here for $14.95. I've bought a total of 6 of them on three separate occasions since Christmas. They may not be the fastest cards around, but they are plenty fast and work great in my D300.

good point, now I follow you...:thumbsup2

Actually, I'm flush with compact flash cards at the moment but if I can score SanDisk Extremes and Ultras or Lexar Pros for a good price, I stock up... like I have in the past. I don't really want A-Data CF cards for $19... that's not what I shop for. But that's just me. I've purchased cheap CF cards before and they were a disappointment in my terms of speed on my camera. I never really believed in CF speed until that cheapo card.

My whole point of my post wasn't that she shouldn't pay attention to what's been said but how far does somebody go in achieving a friend's favour. Even a few cards, if she chose to shoot in raw, more than a few cards can add up. Add a lens to that, maybe a tripod, etc. etc. Then add a wedding present :rotfl2: As the advice was being made, the cost of this favour kept going up. One usually acquires these things in time.... not all at once.

I think the most important think the OP must do is learn to use her camera and all that it can do AND learn about how the flash performs... especially since she is apparently relatively new to the camera (and please correct me if I'm wrong.) You can have all the great equipment in the world and the greatest poses you can think of and it'll mean nothing if you don't know how to best utilize your camera or if all your photos end up being under or over exposed.

As I said before....all good advice given... I'm not disputing THAT or that she asked for help. My advice is the above.

Where is there? $15 for SanDisk Extreme sounds like the bargain I'm looking for....

Most people have no idea how much work goes into wedding photography. When relatives and friends ask me to photograph their weddings, I kindly inform them that I can be a guest or their photographer, but not both. As a guest I take snapshots, and will gladly share them with the couple, but I won't be in "professional" mode. My snapshots will likely be far better than the average snapshot, and that is usually enough for couples who otherwise wouldn't have had a photographer at all.

Wedding shoot story ::yes::

I was asked by a family member to shoot their wedding I obliged and gathered all the stuff up you might need film, lenses flash, slave flashes filters etc etc and head out to the wedding.
I show up and there is another relative there with his new fancy SLR and he is taking some photos do big deal right.... Well I get set up and start to get people in the positions and this guy steps right in front when I go to take the first shot cause he just had to get a pic also :headache:. Well this went on I finally said look we need to set some rules here. He complained to the couple they opted for him to take over since he had a new camera. I was really insulted and ticked off as you can see its not easy to get all the gear and get prepared.:furious:

So I changed my approach and let him shoot the whole thing his way and I went and shot from other areas on my on and enjoyed the day.

Well a couple weeks go by and I get a call wanting to know if I had any of the wedding pics I said sure I was going to drop them off next time I was in town.

They asked if I could send them the negatives so maybe they could get some print made also I said sure and sent it all to them.

I found out afterwards that the new camera must have had some issues since every roll of film came out blank or blurred. :confused3 :goodvibes

The pics I had taken were the only pictures there were that came out and they were thrilled with the shots and were alot nicer this time around. LOL

I've purchased them at that price from periodically from: Staples, Adorama.com, and OfficeMax. Watch for the sales. I also realized that I have the name a bit wrong... They're SanDisk "Ultra II" CFs.

Everyone missed the

Know your equipment better than the back of your hand. When something goes wrong it is rare to have time to read the manual!!!!

What type of paper do you usually use to print the pictures?

She knows she is going to have to pay for the cost of printing the pictures.

I would not print the pictures at home, 99% of the people do not have a good enough printer for something such as wedding photos that your going to want to last for a very long time.

Use a service such as Mpix or similar.

Agreed - don't bother with printing at home...you have to have a really good printer like a high end Canon/HP with individual ink tanks - and those tanks are expensive...and you go through them really fast...especially when doing 8x10 on high quality.

For a decent 8x10 at a resonable cost your local Costco or Sams club ( if you are a member) does a good job..in Canada (Ontario) they use Fuji processors and of course Fuji paper...I am not a huge fan of Kodak processors like they use in Walmart ( Canada again).

Now, if there is a real special 8x10 that they really want done and if you have a decent printer - like a Canon pixma, then sure go ahead. You can manipulate the pic in Photoshop or whatever you are using to edit your photos, then print in high quality..HP makes a decent photo grade paper - good weigh - fast drying -good colour retention - no smearing..I think it is called premium photo plus, but it ain't cheap in CND it is about $15.00 for 20 sheets 8x11.5..

IMHO I am not a fan of Kodak papers, so personally I would stay away from them...just don't like the way they hold colour...

I think it is called premium photo plus
The top end Canon paper is called "Photo Paper Pro"... and you're right, it's expensive.

I agree with Master Mason.

MPIX is the way to go, you can't beat the quality, and the price is good also..

I shoot raw and jpg at the same time and I don't think I get 500 shots on my 4 gig card let alone the 2 gig one. I have a 10 megapixel camera.

As for a gazillion cards.... I have acquired, over the last year or two, many 2 and 4 gig cards but it took me some time to do that (I only buy when they're on sale). If somebody's just starting out with the camera, I don't expect them to buy 5 or 6 cards all at once.

I must also confess that I've not found 2 gig compact flash cards for $15 either. Is that how much they are in the US? If so, let me know where so the next time I'm down there, I can buy a few!!! Are these the Ultra or Extreme speed ones? I'm always looking for a bargain. :thumbsup2
i got 2 2gb value pack cards at best buy a few months back for $40 total..that was the best buy i could find since i needed them right then. i think those were sd so i use them with my converter since my camera uses compact flash. so i would guess if you look online, wait for a sale etc you could find them in the $15 ballpark...can't you get stuff shipped to canada from places like frys or someplace?
gotta say i agree about the thread though... it's taken on a life of it's own and probably giving the op nightmares by now rather than easing her anxiety :lmao: but $$ for a wedding gift?..hey imo they got the wedding gift with the tramatic stress inducing job they handed her:lmao:
mpix is like $2 for an 8x10 so well worth it.

I have used mpix before when I take pictures of my DD. I have used metallic paper and endura lustre paper. One of the PP suggested adoramapix.com. Which paper do I chose?
