I find the rates of the big companies online to be VERY high ($400-600 per day and then add gas?). I know thousands of folks buy nice RV's, only to have them sit in the driveway or storage area for 90% of the year. I know of websites where owners of timeshares rent their weeks out .. but I have not found a website where owners of RV's cheaply rent out time in their RV's. Anyone have any insights?

I don't think you will find a site like that. An RV of any kind costs thousands and thousands of dollars. Even used an RV is expensive! The risks of renting an RV are high. Someone with no experience driving/towing, using the various RV features (believe me, the bathroom in an RV is totally different from what you'd find at home!!!), and such result in a high likelyhood of damage to the RV. Heck, we own a 23 year old pop up camper, and DH backed over a stump last trip ripping off the step! He's a towing expert, and accidents happen.

If you're interested in staying in campgrounds but don't want the expense of renting an RV and aren't into tenting, many campgrounds have cabins to rent. They're bare-bones, but you're off the ground! You provide the linens and towels, your own cooking gear, and the bathrooms are shared.

I grew up camping, and it used to be that camping was way cheaper than hotels. However, camping near any type of tourist attraction is getting as expensive as a budget motel. We're going to Hershey PA this summer. The campgrounds near Hersheypark are almost $50 a night for a site. The Motel 6 a few miles away is $41 a night. We're staying there. There's AC, our own bathroom, and we don't have to haul a 2000 pound camper!

We rented through a private owner before. They were local to us. We had gone to a local RV store, and they had nothing available for our dates, so they gave us the guys phone number. I've seen ads in the paper before too. You might try craigslist or something similar. I know the person we rented from had some kind of rental insurance, and he had 4 RVs to rent. We had asked about the insurance because we were worried about it.

No, just RVing in general. I think it would be a great way to travel now with the kids. Video games, movies, cooking, and bathroom all on the road with us. I know that are very expensive, so I figured folks would be interested in renting out for $100 a day or so to recoup some their cost. Even if they only rented out 4 weeks a year, $2800 toward the payments would have to help a ton! Rent out 10 weeks and you are looking at $7G. Better than sitting idol inthe driveway as most seem to do, from what I can tell. I've tried Craigslist, found nothing but sales. Oh well, worth a shot:rolleyes:

Actually the liability would make it cost quite a bit more not to mention wear and tear of someone else using it and not treating it as well as you etc.

You may want to post this on the camping board here as there are lots of people there that own RVs and may have opinions or ideas for you in general.

I have to agree with those who think it unlikely that folks would be willing to rent out their RV. Even a basic bus will cost upwards of $100,000 and I've seen some worth five or six times that amount. Not the kind of property I'd be too willing to entrust to strangers, or friends either, for that matter. It's a different story for companies like RVAmerica, etc., because that's what they are in business for. But for the average Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who have a fortune tied up in their unit. . .nah. . .not worth it. Wear and tear, accidents, liability, all reasons why the big companies charge what they do.

Yes, we own a large RV. It's quite expensive and takes some expertise to drive and maintain. No way would I rent it out. Too risky.
