I use IE Explorer BETA or something like that. You can use tabs and stuff, it makes looking at the Disboards REALLLLY easy.

Sometimes I use Firefox or MSN Explorer.

I tried to get beta, but it wouldn't let me install it. They're FAQ is too hard...

We have internet Explorer but my dad has every security thing in the world on this computer, so I think we're good. He's a computer wiz.

I'm guessing you use norton too?

I use all 3. IE for school, Firefox for the internet and Opera for torrents.

Firefox, there is not real alternative, ive tried them all and firefox is the safest and has the ease of use that the avg computer user is looking for, but really safety is a relative term on windows lol GO LINUX!!

with a well educated user, which seem to be fewer and farther between (I think you should have to take a test to own a computer) but yes, windows can be a safe opperating system.

There are several things that you need to do that the average person just doesn't.

These include
removing Norton (god I hate that program)
turning the firewalls off, and setting up your own.
Refusing to let IE access the internet.
Download Zonealarm.(Love this)
setting up a router password.
Disabling the semi hidden account and changing the password (nine times out of ten, this is how a hacker gets in)
Preforming regular virus checks.

I've used macs and I've used PCs, and I just like how a PC runs better. Macs are no better, nor are PCs. a machine is only as good as its owner.

norton ugh....AVG FREE!!!.....i also recomending turning off auto updates they are so useless and they bog down your pc...i agree with the no IE thats a must...i do like zone alarm....and as far as saftey programs go i use Spybot S&D, Adaware and Hijack This (only use if u know what ur doing)....i do use a router password but i know people who dont and they still do ok as long as they have other safety features....i also recomend leaving off netframework but for some videoediting and multimedia programs you have to have it...go figure. but yea the reason i said that about linux is u dont have to do any of this stuff its just geniuanly safe :thumbsup2 and i have a mac and i dont really care for OSX decent but not my cup of tea :confused3

but sparx it sure sounds like you know your stuff and imo you pass my imaginary computer owners test! lol :thumbsup2

Norton is okay in my opinion. My dad hates subscriptions, so we stick with the freebies, AVG, Zonealarm, Spybot, Adaware. My dad stressed scanning for everything alot. Before we can use the internet we have to scan all the computers.

firefox is the safest

Actually, Firefox isn't. Opera is the safest. Firefox had about 3 more holes than Opera, but Firefox is def. simpler than Opera.

Internet Explorer, and hey Munky, the Wii will have an Opera web browser in it out of the box I believe. :cool1:

Norton isn't really much of a virus protector. Remember, its made by the same people who made IE.

I preform a weekly scan, and if I'm feeling like there is a problem, I'll scan daily.

Defraging can help you out a little too.

Im not sure if I've stated my problem with IE.

Internet Explorer was a nice idea in its day. I remember when thats all there really was for pcs.(and god that thought made me feel old)
But as technology advanced, IE didn't. Sure there were updates, but nothing changed with it on a noticable scale.
IE is a hackers dream. But to understand that statement you have to understand hacking.

Hacking is when a third part enters your computer without your permission. There are bots that do this, but the really scary ones that you need to worry about are the malicious people.

A person hacking your computer does so by "pinging". pinging is when they create this program that fires a signal at random IP addresses (an IP is what your computer uses to get online). When it finds a real IP address, it pings, and fires a different signal back at the hackers computer.

He knows you here then. He then starts to open up your router, if youre lucky. if your not, he could already be inside if he doesn't have a router to worry about.

It is near impossible to open up a router from a third party, but if someone wants in bad enough, I'm sure they could do it.

He then follows the signal to your computer. I've seen a hackers computer and it looks exactly like your desktop.

Now there are three kinds of hackers.

malicious, word pad, and shutdown.

a malicious hacker destroys your maching.
a word pad hacker opens up word pad and talks to you. (this is so scary. I've seen it happen to my cousin before)
a shut down hacker just turns their computer off. They just wanted a challenge.

You never know what hacker is going to want into your machine.

Now the reason that IP is a hackers dream, is not because of human hackers for the most part, its more of a virus writer problem when concerning humans. But bots can get to your comptuer through the same way a virus does.

A bot is adware, spyware, and anything like that. and they get in through wormholes in a program. and speaking of holes and IE, it looks like swiss cheese.

all i can say from experience is to NOT use Norton. it's probably the evilest thing we've had on our computer. the same thing has happened twice. we get this virus from somewhere (I think it might be the same place) and it pretty much destroys Norton. & it does. literally. so Norton doesn't work, so we're not allowed on the internet because we're just the perfect target, no firewall, no virus protection. you think the perfect thing to do would be to just take Norton off, and re-install it. Naw, Norton won't uninstall. So we have wipe EVERYTHING off our PC. Clean it completely. This time my brother saved things of importance on cd's (mostly my pictures from Disney, my graphics, etc.) and we only lost things of minor importance. It sucked, It felt like starting all over again.
But now we use McAfee which was a pain at first, but it's fine now ^_^

can someone tell me the difference between Mozilla Firefox & Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode) ?

Ahhh, don't remind me! My dad never cared to update our Norton for a year so of course we got the same virus. Norton started to claim everything was a virus. Even MS Paint! We uninstalled Norton but it was too late. We had to reinstall Windows. AND we didn't back up anything...

Safe mode is launching Firefox with all the security it gives, but without the extensions and themes you installed. I can't remember anything else.

What happened for me with Norton was, when I turned my computer off, Norton automatically disabled...heh and because I'm so computer literate  (yeah right) I didn't realize the program was not detecting viruses.

Now...lucky me, I have 6 viruses infecting that computer along with 50 trojans (not sure what that is, I'm just saying what a scan report told me lol)

Currently that computer is "dead" until we buy some $90 removal thing and unfortunately, that isn't happening soon (as we have three other operational computers in the house).

Heh, I pray nothing gets lost on that computer (appears to me that might be a miracle). I have saved well over 100 of my writings on that computer without saving anywhere else (yes, I was extremely stupid) and I also have pictures saved to that computer that isn't saved anywhere else.

If everything gets lost, I don't know what I'll do.

Then upon using the computer I am now, I couldn't log my sister out of the Dis for a week...just added to my frustration... :badpc:

Anyway, to stop my digression, heh, I am not happy with Norton right now. lol. Maybe after things cool down, lol, I'll forgive it.
