Weather question for locals:

Here is a question for the locals, OR frequent Disney guests: What type of clothing should I pack for our trip to 'the world' in January? Shorts for day and long pants/jackets for evening, or does the weather not fluctuate during the course of day/evening/night? My kids want to swim--is that dumb for this time of year there? Also, are rain clouds frequent during the afternoons like they are in the summer by the beach? As you can see, I'm pretty far removed from Florida, so I need all the help you can give me!

I'm not a local, but I can tell you that January weather is completely unpredictable. You oculd have warm afternoons with cool mornings, or you could have mornings near freezing with afternoons stuck in the 40s or 50s. And of course you could have anything in between. So you'll need to pack a little of everything.

Rain is not as frequent as it is during the warm months.

I'm sure you won't find many Floridians swimming in January, but you'll find lots of tourists swimming, especially those from the northern tier of states and Canada.

Weather in the "winter" is pretty unpredictable (as said above).

For instance Christmas was like in the 80s or something crazy. It could be in the 30s or 40s or in the 70s or 80s.

It usually is on the warmer side during the day and drops to a nice chill at night. The best thing to do is to watch the weater about 5-7 days before your trip, and pack accordingly to that.
