Here is a Minnesota Girl's view on the NYC/City/Upstate/Jersey/Philly deal. (BTW, I used to live in Queens...and Brooklyn...and Manhattan at one point!)

NYC (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx....and Staten Island) = The City
Staten Island is often disregarded and called a garbage dump.

Anywhere in New York State outside of the above is 'Upstate'.

And, it's Jersey and Philly.

I have friends that live on Staten Island - and I know it's not just a garbage dump, they live in a very nice condo with a fantastic view! Didn't mean to offend, just stating what people called it while I lived out there. My apologies if I did.
