Pirates is a ride I always loved. The original message of "piracy will not pay in the end", was circumvented by the addition of a successful Captain Jack Sparrow wallowing in loot, alluding capture and putting one over on the local populace. I was a bit bothered by the bride auction scene. I am more bothered by the change of focus to "piracy pays off" instead of the previous ending " pirates blow themselves up in the end".

Apparently, we are supposed to root for the pirates at all times now.

As a company, if you're doing something that 13% of your customers don't like and you can make a change that enough of the 87% remaining are not going to be turned off by that you come out net ahead, you'll do it.

I do not doubt that there are a lot of people that love the iconic scene and line, but this reminds me a lot of when Maelstorm was closed. It was almost never spoken about and the wait time for the most part was relatively low, but suddenly when it's announced that it would be replaced, there was a huge public outrage, everyone was crying out how much they loved and adored the ride, and suddenly everyone was riding it.

Now do not get me wrong, Frozen I feel may not belong necessarily, however, I couldn't help to honestly roll my eyes at how many people suddenly came out of the wood work and were proclaiming their love for the ride and how great it was! If it was truly the case, it would have a higher average wait time and due to that Disney would have found motivation to refurb regularly, which it almost never did. And this is coming from someone who did enjoy the ride, not hated it.

That being said, there is no denying how much people love the scene, but I feel that there a lot of this is the bandwagon effect. Especially since those few who do have a different opinion, are either ignored, or argued with. There is no denying this is a classic scene, but honestly, is it really that important and crucial to the storyline? Is it really? The character is going to remain and not only that, but in a more substantial role as she herself is a pirate, but is the line "We wants the red head!" really needed, or that important? Is that one line really that loaded with nostalgia that you need it? Nostalgia is something that is important to all of us, but if I need a nostalgia fix I find a way to get it. Watch old Pirate videos. I do that now, as I prefer the look and feel to the Old DL version to the WDW version. The fact of the matter is, is that things change and move forward. I do not feel it necessary to be upset about change unless it's something offensive, which I do not find this change to be at all.

Yes, it sucks that slowly Disney is sanitizing the pirates ride, but at the same time, at least they're trying to sort of stick to the same element, with it being objects instead of people, while also keeping the classic character alive in the form of a pirate. I always loved the look of the red head while growing up as a little girl unknowing of what was going on, but now that I've grown up and known the true nature of the scene, it's just something I accepted, as a means of a history lesson, but now that I've found out that there were female pirates and now she's going to be included as a pirate instead? That makes me very excited. While being a pirate isn't something necessarily to celebrate in real life, it is in the world of Disney, and it will finally make other little girls feel included.

I think they wouldn't have had to change the scene if they weren't making billions based on the idea that pirates as actually good guys

I don't know if anyone else on this thread has little kids who watch Disney Junior, but they do show good versus bad pirates on there. Jake and the Neverland Pirates features three kid pirates who are the good guys, and Captain Hook, who is the villain of the show.

I find the suicide in the HM quite disturbing, he felt his only way out was to kill himself. That is way more obvious to children, even the voice tells you so.

Yes. As someone whose stepson hanged himself this is of particular distaste to me. I am aware that the HM is beloved, and we love it too... but we are definitely not looking up and it's a momentary reminder of a horrifically painful part of our lives.

As for POTC...

I have never been offended, but I have always felt the scene was crass and in poor taste. I don't have a problem with the update.

the insanity of political correctness. Are there really that many people insulted by this scene? If you are that offended by a Disney ride, exercise your constitutional rights and AVOID it. This classic deserves to remain as designed, until the popularity of the ride decreases enough to replace the whole area with something else.

do you also have a problem with disney updating rides for non-pc reasons? Obviously the POTC that exists now is very different from the original and you state that "the classic deserves to remain as designed"

I would prefer to have disney gradually modify rides to modernize them (POTC) rather than leave them stale and let them die a slow death (Carousel of progress)

It's ridiculous, but this is the world we live in today. Everything must be PC.

It's a ride folks. A ride that briefly takes you into the world of Pirates, with songs and memorable characters.

If you go into these things looking to find something to nit pick or something to upset you, you're probably going to find something.

It won't stop me from enjoying the ride, but it does make me wonder whats next. There's always something on the agenda.
I agree. This is just ridiculous. What is this world coming to?! Sad to change a classic because someone feels it's not right. Wake up folks!!!! There are many things in this world that people think are "not right". Enjoy the ride for what it is or just STAY HOME!!!!!!

Love the Carousel of Progress. Hope they don't demolish it. One of Walt's original concepts. They need to keep some classic rides to remind everyone why they are able to walk through such a great place today!

and now we all need to make a decision if we will enjoy the new version of the ride or stay home- personally such a minor change hardly seems like something to get so worked up about.
...and yes you are entitled to your opinion I do agree with you, but true Disney fans just like to see some things remain the same for the value of the ride.

I love it too I do it every time I go- but the parks need to continue to grow and evolve wdw is not a museum dedicated to our nostalgia as much as i wish it were

Well, that can go both ways!

That was my point

What I have seen play out in these few threads is that if you must split it into two groups ...

1) Group A is not bothered by the scene, would like the ride to maintain it's "classic-ness" as we lose more and more of Walt's original input, sees the full ride as a story but is certainly not getting upset, going off on tangents of society behavior, getting political etc. We will all naturally live with the new ride, even if disappointed.

2) Group B is very bothered by the scene, reads all kinds of ill will into it, is getting political and sign carrying upset. They want it gone to right the wrongs in the world and simply can't understand why anyone, especially women, aren't protesting it's existence. Group B is the one getting "worked up".

It's funny, I am Group A, I have kept saying I'm fine if it stays and fine if it goes, after all it's just a theme park ride. Of course without Walt - none of this would be here at all. So I'm sad because it's classic, but WOW ..... given all the indignation by Group B .... makes me want to dig in tighter. And again ......... I think it's time we let the dwarfs go, especially Dopey. Funny, all that stuff I listed much earlier that is offensive, inappropriate and harmful to others ....... I think only one person has verbally agreed to one of them. So what? we are cherry picking what offends us and what doesn't. :confused3

I really would have loved to be a fly on the wall inside the Disney boardroom for this decision.

As a child the scene never bothered me. I understood that pirates were bad people and women were not respected. I personally wish they would leave the scene.

When we last rode POTC My seven year old daughter asked me "What are they doing to those girls?" I explained that pirates were mean to women and would sell them. And reminded her that pirates are not good people. Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the nicer pirates, but most are really mean. I also added that as girls we are lucky to not live in that world.

It's the same way I explain anything in history or "lore" to my kids that is wrong or evil.

We all see things differently- personally I find all the indignation by the disney originalists calling themselves "true disney fans" the true irritating part. I'm really ambivalent to little changes like this but people getting so upset about minor changes to modernize old attractions makes me dig in deeper on the opposite side.

I really appreciated your post as it made me think about how different people see conversations differently

I was not attacking you in anyway- I had written and posted another two paragraphs and felt I had gone too off topic so I deleted it

a reminder that no political terms or comments will be allowed on these boards
I just reread the guidelines - is the term "pc" really not allowed? The Cambridge Dictionary definition of the term is "avoiding language or behavior that any particular group of people might feel is unkind or offensive." Unless the reminder is referring to another post.
