We should make this guy an honerary WISHer.

Just wanted to pop in and say :welcome:

I read your story and thought it was amazing! I'll be at the 1/2 in January and I'll be sure to say hello if I see you. I'm still scared of the idea of a full marathon - maybe one of these days! :goodvibes

Aww shucks, Mr. M......We're just paying it forward. There is NO WAY I could have run 13 feet, never mind 13 miles (OK I don't run it ALL, mostly walking, but I digress...) without my WISH team! :yay:

BTW you might also want to know.....you'll hear LOTS of lime green cow bells along the course....That'll be us! :cheer2:

My brother in law is doing the Goofy this year and I wan't going to go to the half but because so many of you will be there I will make sure to get up and get out there. Don't worry about it, I'm scared of the full marathon too.

Question, how quickly do you walk the half in? Walking or Running it's still 13 miles. Don't forget the point 1.

In 2007 I did it in 3:14. This year I did it in 3:02, I think, but I'd have to look that up to be sure. :upsidedow I was going for a sub-3 last year but well, that didn't happen. For 2009 IT WILL! :thumbsup2

My splits are somewhere around 13-14 min miles for most of the race. I struggle around miles 7 to 9. I have slowed down a bit both times between those miles. Maybe I need a boost around that time. Like a Gu. Or ShotBloks. Or an eggplant parm wedge! (Hard to fit in the fuel belt though.) :lmao:

I'd be happy with that at a running pace right now. Nice job.

Are you following any specific plan?

I know quite few folks on here like the book Marathoning for Mortal by John Bingham. He has plans in the back for Walking, doing a Walk/Run, Run/Walk and Running a Half Marathon and Full Marathon. I'm following his Walk Plan for the Half. I'm walking, but taking run breaks for 2-3 min at the start of each mile. I tried running and was really, really slow. I find that doing this, I'm still about the same pace, but it's a little better on my joints. It's my first Half so my goal is just to finish and really enjoy the experience. I figure for the following races, I'll progress to more of a walk/run then run/walk.

Good luck!

Your story inspires us all and "throws some logs on the fire" for us too. The effort to start is the greatest effort there is. You have done that and then some.

I have run Goofy for the last two years. This year I am running the 5K (Friday), Half Marathon and Marathon. I hope to see you at our WISH meet at Pop Century!

This weekend, there are a small group of us WISHers that are running the Marine Corps Marathon. Next month, even a bigger group of us are running the Philadelphia Marathon. There are other threads for these races, please stop by to say hello!

The WISH team goes on the road, many of us travel to races in other states and run together. Trust me, the support is needed, infectious and contageous.

I do hope you'll hang around to share your journey with us. We are all here for each other. GOOD LUCK TO YOU! DON"T GIVE UP!!!

Again, :welcome:

I'll see you at the finish line! :thumbsup2

I second the Marathoning for mortals plans. I am doing the run/walk plan for the 1/2. I don't always follow the interval recommendations, but kind of just do whatever feels good that day. but I do follow the schedule of runs and x-training each week. I love the MfM book.

Luckily my brother in law is a personal trainer that does marathons so he has been helping me with the training, the training on my webpage is brutal so every now and then if I need a day off or a day to do some other type of cardio I do that instead. For the most part I stick to that training though. I started out walking and then I started a run/walk. I am not to a full run yet, I can do half run and walk right now on the treadmill. On the road, not so much. I walked more than I ran at my last half marathon in September so I decided recently to move my training to the road. I will be outside until Disney and then go back inside for the rest of the winter. For now I need to get some clothes for the chill that is coming now (supposedly lows in the teens this week coming up). I should be okay though, a little cold never scared anyone and plus it makes for a great video. I probably won't be at a full run (give or take a couple walking breaks) until the marathon after Disney, whichever one that will be.

I won't be doing anything else on Friday except picking up my stuff so I don't see why I could show up at the POP thing, I just have to figure out where it is. I would probably bring my dad along as when I had the stumble at Disney last year he caught the bug and began running. He completed his first half marathon in Green Bay at 54 years old. I thought that was pretty cool.

You mentioned all the other marathon's you are doing, this is the kind of thing I want to do in the long run (no pun intended). I have even looked at marathons outside of the states. I just don't know where to go next. I'd probably want to do another around April 2009 or so. Any ideas?

Are the forums for the other races on this board too?

Yeah, it's a book. Even though you already have plan (which it's very cool to have personal trainer BIL!) the book itself is just a good read. Good advice, stories and some nice humor thrown in too! :thumbsup2

Mr M - Since you asked and I couldn't remember, I had to go look it up. Here's my results for the two WDW Halfs I've done...

2007: 3:14 14:36 average
2008: 3:03 13:47 average

This is mostly walking with some jogging thrown in, but just to tick off the Pearl Izumi people, let's call it a run. ;)

What it really is, is...."Perpetual forward motion". I forget who here first came up with that, but it describes my training and racing perfectly. I just keep going as fast as I can, no matter if its a walk, trot, jog, run...whatever it takes.

I'm glad you joined us. As Howard said, we're all here to put wood on each other's fires. And so, you've done the same to several of us, including me. Thank you for the inspiration.

BTW, I also follow Half plan. It's a FAB-U-LOUS book! :thumbsup2

I know there is a race in NH called Great Bay in April. We have done it the past two years and I probably will do it again this coming year.

I look for races on www.coolrunning.com
There are more websites out there too, I am sure someone else will come along & let you know.

Are the forums for the other races on this board too?
We do start threads on other races. Howard mentioned Philly & Marine Corps. I know alot of WISHers are headed to San Antonio next month for the Rock N Roll marathon. More are going to Vegas in early December (my hubby Chad included). So, you will find threads here about non-Disney races for sure.

We have a weekly thread where we post our workouts, encourage each other, etc. Please feel free to jump in. I never would have done any of the Halfs I have done if it wasn't for this group! :grouphug:

The WISH meet is at the Pop Century Resort food court - please join us!
We also meet at the Boardwalk Bakery on Monday morning to show off our new bling!
Here's a thread about the meets for the weekend: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1899108

:welcome: Leslie!! Glad you decided to join us!!

Pop Century is one of the resorts at Disney. We usually meet in the food court at Pop Century around 4:30 on Friday. Look for all the lime green!

You'll see WISHers throughout the course during the full marathon. We try to get as many people in as many different places as we can to help motivate each other.

The WISH team is pretty much contained on this board. There are some threads for individual races when we get a group together that's going. There will probably be some folks at the Flying Pig in May in Ohio and I know there's some going to Country Music Marathon in TN in April. Check out the WISH team calendar of events for people who have signed up for specific races.

In addition to being infectious and contagious, we're also addictive, so come frequently and post often!

Hi Leslie (MM) :wave2:

I was the one who signed your guestbook. I watched alot of your videos!! Very inspiring!!!! Your doing a great job training and hanging in there. I thought that the WISH groupd would be a great place for you to help keep you inspired!!

I am a walker and actually do some judged racewalking events. (yes, racewalking is an olympic sport!!)

My first Half Marathon was the WDW 2007 Half. I finished in 3 hours 17 mins and some seconds. My fastest so far was the Miami ING Half Marathon in 3hours 10 min.

The goal for me is to just keep moving forward, no matter what it takes!! I like Disney race events because it is also for the fun!! I had a great time this yeat at the Disneyland Half and hanging with LynnG for the first part of the race, catching up with Michelle and then passing Jim towards the end. We help, support, cheer each other one and we don't let anyone give up!!

Keep up with the great work and look forward to seeing you at WDW and waterstop #11!!!!!

Tracy

Thanks guys for the support, I made it to mile two last year before they picked me up. It was a humbling experience. If I'm picked up this year it will be at mile 26.2. I'll be ready. If no one remembers me (I'm sure I wasn't hard to spot) I still remember the support I received over those two miles. It stuck with me and I will never forget it. Once again thanks for the support, the more I get the stronger I seem to get.

MM

Welcome to the WISH Team Leslie.

Looking forward to seeing you out there in January. Stop by for the WISH meet on Friday afternoon at POP Century food court. We'll all be taking over the place.

Thanks for bringing me here. Thanks for checking out my vids.

Are you doing the Miami ING half this year? I believe that is going to be my dad's next race.
