We paid $4 million for a cabin on a cruise ship

You know, lots of people skeptical on how this would work for doctors, school etc., but let's be real, if you had this kind of travel/vacation home budget and Disney offered this for its concierge cabins, would any of us say no?

I was thinking the same thing. If I had the money, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

So many assumptions. Slow unreliable internet at sea is about to be a thing of the past with Starlink and its competitors. At launch they plan to have O3B satellite internet, which is what Royal Caribbean uses. It's very fast and reliable in my experience, even for video streaming. 133/67 Mbps is what they are saying is typical.

A quick look at the ship's website shows they have teachers on board and offer "worldschooling", as well as accredited online school.

Even without Starlink, in the last year I've done Zoom calls from the Celebrity Edge, the Celebrity Beyond, the MSC Seashore, and the Ruby Princess. I was able to work just as effectively from sea as I could from home. Disney is the only cruise line I routinely sail that has terrible Internet (although I'm sure that some ships on other lines are bad too). That seems to be improving, but I canceled my EBTA on the Disney Magic last year specifically because I couldn't rely on having decent Internet access.

All of the ships except for the Wonder have been upgraded. Unfortunately, the connection on the Magic was still pretty bad when I used it last fall (after the upgrade). Maybe you have to pay for the premium package to get something more useable. For me, even surfing news websites and checking email felt like a slow satellite connection. DCL needs to improve their WiFi network, too. There are too many dead spots and places with weak connections on the ship.

I would assume he has a contract to buy the unit with a nice sized deposit but until the ship is built he’s not out the 4mil. If I had the money and ability I’d wouldn’t hesitate to do something like this.

Well, it's not just $4 million. You also have to pay thousands every months in maintenance fees. I'd bet that those fees go up every year, too. Overall, it doesn't seem like a good investment. But, if you have more money than you know what to do with, sure, it looks fun.

Yes, but even if you have the money would you give it to a company with no credentials and led by a man with no experience in this industry?

It seems like a big risk and I wonder if there are any get-out-clauses.

I think this sounds amazing! Traveling the world would be such an adventure!
He served our country, began another successful career after getting out, and now he gets to spend his time and money however he wants to. Good for him!
My assumptions would be that I couldn't possibly know all the details - but he and his family have it planned out to work for them.

Millions of kids homeschool or do online school. I doubt wealthy people worry about the occasional medical bill. They are only in their 50’s they look fit and may never go to a doctor.

There are a lot of wealthy people that got that way trading especially over the last 8 years. I think it’s great. Good for them

My internet was really good on Royal. My son is taking a online class so hopefully if he’s a couple of assignments to submit he has no problem. He was able to submit a quiz when we were on the Wish. It’s hit or miss on Disney ships. If your in port everyday you could make trades on a cell phone using data. Millions of people do that everyday.

Agree about RC’s internet. We’ve sailed at odd times with them since 2017 and my university schedule never matched up with my kid’s’ schedules. I taught distance learning classes while on board with no issues.

Well, but it's still the same clinic, though. You don't have one surgeon ordering an implant guide and having it shipped to some other country, where they fit the guide and order the implants, which get sent to yet another country, where they actually do the implants, then send you to another country for follow up care, then yet another country to get the crown fittings, then yet another country to have the crowns installed. That's just not practical.

Not practical? This is how many military families entire lives are. Not practical at all! They get by with this and through many far more not ideal situations. I know you meant no disrespect, but be careful calling out how others, especially military families live their lives. This retired sailor can understand and is very happy for that Marine and what he can do and how he and his family makes it work for them (which may not work for you, and that’s ok)
