One of the gals over on the DVC board suggested I post this over here..... THanks for any insights you guys have...... I am really going nuts about this......

Okay I have tried not to get worked up about the room assignment situation at OKW..... but since we are arriving so late (after 11pm) during the sold out time of early December I am concerned

BUT the fact is.........

If we do not get a 1st floor villa OR a building with and elevator we might as well head home......... No way No how can pops walk up a flight of stairs........

We booked 10 months out........ for December 7th-14th.......

Should I prepare a back up plan...... make cash ressies somewhere else just in case...... but then I would loose the deposit coz we wouldnt need the cash room if we got a 1st fl/elevator building.......... Would the front desk assist us on getting other accomidations if they are unable to provide us with a 1st floor room......... With such short notice could we do AKL or Poly on points? Heck even Widerness Cabins?

I know room requests are just that..... requests and cant be garentted (ack I cant spell! sorry) but do they have any obilgtation to find us a suitable room?

We are listed as needed the 1st floor or elevator for medical reasons, but I have been reading how so many people are not getting non smoking rooms for medical reasons......

UGH I hate fretting about details....... but this is a big one......

I do plan on faxing the requests again a couple of days out..... and I hope that the scooter that should be there waiting for us would help them remember....... but still I worry..........

Can anyone reassure me? Or at least let me know if the front desk could swicth us to AKL/Poly that night?

THanks bunches......

Laura <--------- who is still misty eyed about the trip and is really trying not to worry about this yet cant help herself..... I gotta plan for the worst and hope for the best...... Ya know?

Laura,
I have requested first floor for medical necessity at OKW and have always got it. I never called again after my initial call. If it makes you feel better, call or fax and remind them of the medical need. I wouldn't make aother ressie. What kind of units did you request?
The worst I can think of is you may have to split up for one night so pops could have a first floor unit for that night if, and it is a big IF, you don't get what you need that late in the day. Resolve it in the morning.
Have a great trip.

I have been asking for first floor rooms at OKW for medical reasons for a few years now & have always gotten first floor. I make my request when I make my reservation. I don't bother calling or faxing ahead of time. I have found front desk CMs to be very helpful in fulfilling my requests - first floor & non-smoking, both for medical reasons. Relax & have a good time!!

I suggest that you call and speak to special needs about this. Emphasize that without it you will not be able to remain on property but will have to find alternative accommodations.

I was told that if a request for first floor for medical reasons is noted on your ressie, that it's guaranteed. I've never had a problem. That said, I've been assigned to an unsuitable room twice last year. The "accessible" room at Wilderness Lodge had an unaccessible bathroom- we were moved to the Contemporary. At Coronado Springs we were put in a room that reeked of smoke- we were moved to AK Lodge. So, if push comes to shove, which I strongly doubt, Disney will move you somewhere comparable or above so that your medical needs are met. I agree though that if you're worried, call Member Services and they can make sure you're assigned to the correct type room. ---Kathy

Special needs is appropriate for people who are paying cash for reservations, but not for DVC member reservations. Member Services handles all DVC member reservations, special needs or not. We've actually called the Special Reservations number and been told that.
Here's the phone number for WDW Resort Special Reservations:
(407) 939-7807
(407) 939-7670 [TTY]

I posted on your thread on the DVC board, so I won't add any more here, except to say that we have never had a problem getting a first floor room when our reservation has lsted that it's for medical needs.

What is concerning me is two things.... First OKW(and all DVC resorts) is sold out.... both for us DVC members AND for cash ressies........this is a huge time for DVCrs....... So to respond to Kathy's post..... it will be very hard for them to find us another 2 bedroom villa (something comparable since everything is booked)

The second is I know of a lot of people who have requested nonsmoking for medical condtions and have recieved smoking rooms....... This request was stated first on their requests.......

I will call ahead and write a letter to the manager of OKW restating our requests, for both peace of mind and as a freindly reminder.

Someone suggested I request a handicap room..... I am hesistant in doing so, because I dont want to take that room away from someone who needs it...... as we dont need the accessibilty to the showers etc....... just cant walk up stairs.....

Thanks again for your responces.... I will post an update when I find out more :-)

i sent a rather long email to DVC member services asking if Medical Requests still get priority at OKW. I got a rather short reply:
Hello,

Thank you for contacting Member Services.

Your medical request still gets special attention.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

So, my take on this is that it sounds like nothing has changed for medical requests.

So if I am staying at OKW, I have a scooter rental, I want to be on the 2nd or 3rd floor, I know they have 3 buildings with elevators. So what is the proability that I will get that, I really don't like the 1st floor. Anyone have good experience with OKW?

It would be interesting to see if their confirmation letter stated it was non smoking for Medical Reasons. I do know of some people who listed that first and told MS that they needed it because of medical reasons, but it was not on their confirmation letter that way. If it's not on the confirmation letter, it is just in as a preference, not a need. Also, I know some people who were given a non-smoking room that someone had smoked in.

You can put in a medical request for first floor or building with elevator for medical reason. Make sure the confirmation letter states it that way. At the same time as you make your medical request, let them know that you prefer 2nd floor on the elevator building. We have done it this way the last 2 years and have ended up on 2nd or 3rd floor on one of the elevator buildings. They won't guarantee the building, but you should get either one of those buildings or 1st floor.
