I stand by my assertion that nobody really reads these things. I can ramble at length or keep it brief, and really, my buddies from other threads might pop in just for kicks, but it basically just serves as a way for me to pass the next 50 days.
So there you have it.

We are going to WDW in August. So are millions of other people. We aren't special. We aren't particularly engaging or exciting, either. "We" are DH 40, Me 37, and DS12. This is our 8th trip since 2005.

I like to plan Disney trips. I started planning this one last October. Or somewhere in there. The timeline so far has been like this:

October 2007 - Found out I would have the second week of August off in 2008. We were already planning WDW for the first or second week. Thought it might be nice to do a week with all 3 of us, and a week with just DS & me before our APs expire. Started planning a week at AKL and a week at Pop.

November 2007 - Booked airfare on miles for 2 of us. Figured we could buy DH's tickets once we knew which week he was planning to join us. DH's vacation bid day rolled around, both weeks were available, so he took both weeks. Now all 3 of us are going to WDW for 16 nights. August 1 - 17. That's a long time. Hmm. Okey dokey, then! Nix the week at Pop because the 3 of us plus 16 nights worth of luggage won't fit in a room at Pop. But hey! We'll be there for my birthday, so might as well plan BIG! I booked 3 nights of concierge at AKL so we can do the Sunrise Safari. No AAA rate. No Disney Visa rate. It's rack rate. That's not good. DH bought a dSLR camera. Must do the Sunrise Safari.

December 2007 - We went to WDW for a few days. I had all 16 August nights booked at AKL, but decided to do the last 7 nights at Beach Club on a bounce back deal. Our first split stay! No bounce back rates for AKL concierge. It's still rack rate.

January 2008 - I spent copious amounts of time getting ready to call for ADRs. I figured we wouldn't do DDP, but that DxDDP keeps pulling me back in. The numbers do not support doing DxDDP, but I keep looking at it anyway. E-mailed IPO with my safari request. Spoke to Don at AKL IPO to confirm everything - he is very nice.

February 2008 - Called at precisely 7 AM EST for my first 10 nights of ADRs. Got everything I wanted. Good. It's all coming together. Booked a flight to Orlando for DH because the prices weren't coming down and I was getting fidgety. Kept calling for ADRs until I had all 16 nights finished.

March 2008 - My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was not good. In fact, this was catastrophic. :( I felt guilty planning a trip to WDW. I booked 2 trips to see her, bringing DS both times. Luckily airfare wasn't THAT high yet. I started researching breast cancer. I decided not to stay at Beach Club for the second week. I modified the ressie to AKL. No bounce back and no AAA for a NON-concierge room. Booked it at rack rate.

April 2008 - DS and I went to see Mom. She was doing OK. She was on medication to shrink the tumor. They were supposed to schedule her surgery towards the end of May. I kept feeling guilty about the trip. My boss said I shouldn't feel guilty because they are 2 separate issues. If there is an emergency I can leave from WDW. If things are fine then things are fine. That made me feel a little better. Bit the bullet and booked DH on the same flight home that DS and I are booked on, even though it was expensive. In the event that I DO have to leave WDW I can't have the 2 of them going home on separate flights.

May 2008 - I bought a laptop so we can load the photos from the memory cards to the laptop on our trip. AP rates came out for the first 2 nights of our trip, but NO discounts for AKL concierge. Rack rate. DH said we should look at DVC again. Hmm. OK. So I called and bought 160 points at AKV. Booked 4 nights at OKW, 3 nights at AKV (but not concierge). Thought about it for a day, called back and switched to 6 nights at SSR, 3 nights at AKV. Got on the waitlist for another night at AKV. Thought about it some more. Switched over to WL for 4 nights between DVC ressies. No discounts for WL, room is at rack rate. WHAT IS IT with all these rack rate rooms? Booked a fishing excursion out of WL. Added DxDDP to the SSR nights. Changed most of our ADRs. Went to visit Mom over Memorial Day. Not only had they not scheduled her surgery, she hadn't even had the surgical consult yet! WHY is it taking so LONG? :headache: I don't like to wait. To kill time I researched airline baggage policies. I love luggage. Luckily we are grandfathered in so we'll each get to check 2 bags for free. As it should be. I couldn't possibly pack for 16 nights in one paltry bag!

June 2008 - Mom's surgery is scheduled for June 17. That is NOT the end of May! In fact, that is only 6 weeks prior to our trip. :worried: I booked flights to go up. Mom told me for the 784th time that I don't need to come up for the surgery, but I do. My sister, Diva Girl, has made it very clear that Mom's cancer is not going to interfere with her scheduled activities. Diva Girl is 16 and easily the most selfish person on earth. Mom is a single parent. Diva Girl has no job and no responsibilities. She also has a whomping entitlement complex. I HAVE to go for Mom's post-op days so Diva Girl doesn't have Mom out driving 2 hours after her mastectomy. It's bad enough that Diva Girl has stated that Band Camp absolutely trumps anything petty that Mom might have scheduled this summer, like chemo. That is why I am worried about emergencies in the middle of the trip. Mom will do things against her doctors' orders just to pacify Diva Girl.

In many ways this trip has morphed into something WAY different than what I had envisioned. I wasn't planning on 7 nights at rack rate. Or a split stay. Or DVC. I wasn't planning for my mom to be sick. Now I'm not sure what the trip will be like. It's not like the trips we have taken before. We've never been for more than 9 nights. We've never done a split stay. We've never had an ill relative in another state that could require my immediate departure from WDW. I've never felt guilty about a WDW trip, or questioned whether going was the "right" thing to do. I guess this trip will be a learning experience from multiple angles.

I don't really love rack rate, but nobody reads these things anyway. ;)

I'm reading, but I guess I fall into the "my buddies from other threads might pop in just for kicks" category. But I'm truly interested, not just looking for kicks!

pixiedust: I'm here, and reading, and very confused! I'm not sure where you are staying, and when, but I will keep reading so I can find out!

I will say a prayer for you and your Mom. Don't forget to update us on how she does with her surgery!

I'm reading!!! Well the first post still.. just wanted to say that I know exactly what your going through, my mom was just diagnosed May 5, hers is late stage 2 early stage 3 we had planned on going back in February but I postponed to be with my Momma. She meets with the radiologist Monday they are going to try and shrink hers prior to surgery but with chemo. She doesn't want me to cancel our vacay, but I hate to be on the other side of the country with my Mom going through this. My mom is a single parent to, the youngest is 14. Having the same sibling issues to.

Congrats on DVC! Can't wait to read more!

Oh you knew I would be here :goodvibes

We're going August 1-17. Where we are staying is still a matter of some question. :lmao: Today it is AKL concierge, SSR, WL, and AKV. Subject to change without notice.

I am sorry to hear of your mom's diagnosis! They haven't put a stage to my mom's because they don't know if her lymph nodes are involved. Her tumor was 3 cm, now it is down to 2 cm. All of her other scans and tests have been fine, so they THINK it is confined to the breast and possibly the lymph nodes. If the nodes are clear I don't think she will have to have chemo, but I do think she will have to have radiation. Freaky that we have such similar situations! I hope things turn out OK for all of us!! :wizard:

Hi, Beth and Janet!! :wave2: Thanks for stopping by!

It is very freaky!! Hopefully your mom's lymph nodes aren't involved! Moms started at 3.5 they say it has grown to about 5 this past month. :worried: ITA, I pray that everything turns out OK for all!

I love seeing all of your planning in one spot....I almost understand it now:rotfl2:

Just kidding...I love it...but I also count as a friend from another thread...and I can't wait to hear how all the planning turns out.

So it's nearly mid-June. Friday the 13th to be exact! Hopefully nothing bad will happen today!

Let's take a look at the ADRs, shall we?

Since we'll be at WDW for my birthday AND I added those 6 nights of DxDDP I have quite the comprehensive list of dining arrangements. Unfortunately they have been revised so many times that I have no clue what is in Disney's system. What I have listed is this:

TS breakfasts - Crystal Palace (twice), Chef Mickey's, 'Ohana, Tusker House, Whispering Canyon, Kona, Boma. We have been to all of these places for breakfast before. :thumbsup2

TS dinners - California Grill, Coral Reef, Yak & Yeti, Flying Fish, Kona, Tutto Italia, Citrico's, Yachtsman Steakhouse, Wolfgang Puck's Cafe, Narcoosee's, Spoodles, Crystal Palace, Cape May Cafe (with 18 of our friends from the DIS!), Boma, and The Plaza. We have been to 8 of these before, so about half of our dinners will be at new places.

Special Events - Sunrise Safari, Bass fishing excursion, and a photo session at SSR. I'm hoping we'll have a chance to pop in at a "Welcome Home Wednesday" DVC thing. No biggie if we don't make it, though.

We have been incredibly lucky to meet some fabulous DISers on past trips, and we are looking forward to seeing some folks we met last summer and also meeting several more families. In addition to the huge group dinner at Cape May we're hoping to meet up in the parks on occasion. DS might appreciate some company other than his parents. :rolleyes1 Not that DH and I aren't good company or anything...

Elizabeth you have some wonderful dinner choices! I look forward to meeting you & your family. Beings we have ADR's at Donald's breakfast around the same time, I am hoping we can be seated together or close together :thumbsup2

Definitely! ::yes::
I would love to get the boys together a couple of times if it turns out that they get along well. One of these days I will nail down my hotel dates, then I can figure out my parks once and for all! :rolleyes1 Not knowing which days we are switching hotels is kind of messing up my schedule.

I am sure they will get along great! Garrett can be a little quiet, but Riley is a talker :rotfl:

Janet, I'll definitely keep you posted! I know you were thinking of eating at 50's. At this point we have taken that off of our schedule, but it could end up being added back in. :)

Right now I have 50's booked on the 8th for lunch at 12:30!

Back in 2005 we didn't have a digital camera, so we took a bunch of disposable cameras to WDW and snapped away. I thought our pics were OK, all things considered! But apparently they weren't good enough for DH.

Back in high school he had a 35mm camera. For some reason he had given it to his friend, his friend put it in storage, and there it sat. :confused3 DH called his friend and asked for the camera. He took it in to have it refurbed. The camera shop guy thought DH was a nut job. WHY did he want to sink money into a FILM camera? But whatever.

DH took The Camera to WDW with us in October 2005. I go so frustrated with him and that stupid camera I was ready to hurl them both into the lagoon at Epcot. We got home, paid to have the film developed, and discovered the camera very likely has a light leak because there were stripes down the pics. :headache: I was not impressed.

In December 2005 I bought a point & shoot digital Canon. Shortly thereafter DH won a point & shoot digital Nikon at work. We're all set, right? TWO digital cameras! What luck! This will be great! But...

DH refused to give up on the stupid film camera. He insisted the light leak wasn't really that bad, it was only with one lens, blah blah blah. He did finally burn out on that. But THEN he engaged in a full force campaign to convince me that he needed a dSLR. Um, excuse me? Those things are EXPENSIVE! And DH has never even bothered to learn how to use the point & shoot to it's full potential, so WHY should we go out and buy a dSLR? He knows NOTHING about photography!

We fought about it for quite awhile. DH gets on a kick, buys something to support his new "hobby", and then loses interest. Take the metal detector he spent $300 on, for example. He used it about 3 times, never found anything good, and gave up. :headache: He has bought a hunting license that has expired without him ever using it. He went hunting on a few occasions a couple of years ago, but he has never actually managed to shoot anything. His track record was NOT making me want to invest in a dSLR camera.

Well, he FINALLY wore me down. On Black Friday of 2007 we went to Sam's and bought an Olympus dSLR camera. He was STOKED! His pics of our December trip were going to be the best pics EVER! Only they weren't. They were fine, but they weren't amazing. Which proves my point that HAVING a camera doesn't help if you don't understand how to USE it. DH became an insatiable lurker on the Photography forum. Every time I headed to the computer he was already there, in my chair, reading about dSLRs and lusting after the quality of photos other people were posting.

And here is where the dSLR slope gets very slippery. DH won yet another contest at work, and this time he walked away with a Sony dSLR. DH is SURE that the photo of his dreams is just waiting for him, and he will unleash it by acquiring every expensive camera accessory under the sun. But since we can't be certain WHICH camera will yield the PERFECT PHOTO we must buy accessories for BOTH cameras! We have purchased lenses on eBay, an external flash from Best Buy, and most recently a lens from WalMart that he TRIED to hide from me. But they sent the confirmation e-mail to ME and that pretty much blew it for DH's clandestine purchase. We have subscribed to a photo magazine and purchased multiple books on digital cameras and photography.

He came to me the other day and said he now requires yet ANOTHER bag, because the bag he already bought is too small. And he needs a tripod. And some editing software. Because the PERFECT PHOTO continues to elude him. :headache:

We are 7 weeks from departure. I am growing tired of the money pit known as the dSLR camera. Those sweet folks on the Photo forum mean well, I am sure, but they are feeding DH's frenzy for the PERFECT PHOTO. I don't know how much more stuff DH is going to buy before we leave. I am also not sure if anything he buys will compensate for his lack of experience with dSLR cameras. He practices with them sometimes, but there is an awful lot to learn! I am really afraid he will get frustrated and lose interest in it, and a HUGE pile of camera equipment will join a certain metal detector in our storage unit. Time will tell.

Having said all that, there will be LOTS of photos from this upcoming trip. LOTS. Photos of people, places, things, food, etc. Lots and lots of photos. ;)

We have never rented a car at WDW. In fact, we have never rented a car, period. Unless you count that mobile ashtray the dealership rented to me when my worthless car was in for repair. (Yes, RENTED, not loaned.) :furious: But I don't count that.

We are perfectly happy to rely on WDW transport. Or we were. Now the reports of hour-long waits for buses abound. Add to that the fact we're staying at SSR for six nights (maybe more) and we have lots of ADRs at other resorts. Hmmm.

So how hard can it be? Reserve a car online, pop over to the Dolphin and grab the car, enjoy stress-free travel from point to point for the duration of our stay! Right?

Noooo. Nothing about renting a car is simple. I think renting a car was a process designed by the same people who write tax codes for the IRS. Maybe they had some help from the folks who came up with Chinese water torture. I don't think I have ever seen anything so convoluted. I have NO CLUE how to stack these codes, or figure out which thing will give us the best price. Extra driver? GPS? Return the car without a full tank of gas? Sure! For a small fee all things are possible in Rental Car Land! :hyper:

We weren't even going to consider a rental car, but with the bus reports being dismal I just can't see spending up to four hours of every day waiting for a bus!!! :headache:

Then there is the fact of possibly switching our WL nights over to points nights at SSR. I don't WANT to stay 4 more nights at SSR, but the rack rate thing might be starting to get to me. SSR is the only available DVC resort. Staying on points would save us over $1000. Which we would promptly plunk down for a rental car. With barely enough left over for a camera bag.

I used to LIKE planning, but I am finding very little to like about the process this time. :rolleyes1 Don't even get me started on the PIN codes being passed out like candy to everyone NOT GOING in August. :headache: Is it possible to have complete Disney burn-out before we even start packing? How tragic would THAT be? We'll say that's not the case. At least not yet.

I've just come from the Codes & Rates forum where it seems EVERYBODY (other than ME) has a PIN post card for FABULOUS rates during our dates! No wonder there are no AP rates! No need! Everyone has a PIN card! :headache:

So fine. I reserved a rental car. In fact, it's not JUST a car. It's an SUV! :cool2: If we actually do rent it we can move our luggage from resort to resort and not even have to make 2 trips!

There is still the question of resorts, though. We have enough points to add another night at SSR. Which is lovely. But if we want to add 4 nights the points thing gets sticky, and if we have to cancel it is a far more complicated process than just cancelling a room-only at WL.

I spoke with Mom yesterday. She goes for pre-op in the morning, and surgery on Tuesday morning. She doesn't follow up with the oncologist until July 18, though, and whatever treatment he recommends won't begin until after that. We are scheduled to leave for WDW on August 1, which is cutting it awfully close. If she has an adverse reaction to something I need to be prepared to leave WDW immediately, so the less complicated the ressies are, the better. Maybe I should go look at travel insurance. ::yes::

This might be a good idea Elizabeth!
