We have been kicking out the idea of taking the amtrak to WDW!!!1 Has anybody doen it and how can we get to the park from the station?

I'm also from MI! (Lower left on the hand!)

We looked into it, and by the time you get your train tickets, it is SO much cheaper just to fly.

Airtran had some really great deals. We booked $59 for each leg! One up and one back. Can't beat that!

As a fellow "Lower Left on the mitten" ( I am so far lower left that I am almost in the arm) where did you fly AirTran out of? I hate the thought of flying out of Detroit or Chicago with our family of five. South Bend is our closest. Last time, we just drove down.

For anyone from MI who may be interested...we fly out of Kalamazoo, non-stop, to the Sanford-Orlando airport. Have to rent a car, of course, but it is so easy. Direct Air flies on Mondays and Fridays. We are flexible in our schedules, so it works well for us. We're looking at winter homes in Mount Dora so the S-O airport will be very covenient for us.

We also got flights out on Airtran out of DTW for $59 each way. Check with NWA also because they run alot of special to MCO. We flew with them last time. I looked into Amtrack also and it was way more expensive and it goes into Sanford not MCO for Magical Express. Good luck.

The easiest route from Michigan to Orlando by train would be to drive to Toledo (Ohio), catching the eastbound Capitol Limited from there and changing trains in Washington to Florida. It's a pleasant, relaxing journey with both coach and sleeper (first-class) accomodations available, and full dining and lounge cars. It can easily be more expensive than flying, but frankly, price is not the reason most people choose the train over flying or driving (and it is the automobile - not the airplane or the bus - which is the trains' primary competition).

From the train station to Disney, taxi's are always available, rental cars are "on call" (usually means they'll pick you up or reimburse the taxi to the rental location), and some of the numerous Orlando area limo/town car services will make the trip. Most passengers detrain at Orlando, though the Kissimmee station is marginally closer for Walt Disney World destinations.

With the exception of Auto-Train, Amtrak does not serve Sanford. Trains stop in Orlando (ORL) and Kissimmee (KIS).

Four years ago my Mom took a train to WDW (she doesn't like flying). She left a day or so before us. Her train was delayed (I hear that happens quite a bit) by almost six hours or so.

We picked her up from the Orlando station - there were cabs waiting around.

I wanted to take my DGC on the train this year (but I wanted a sleeper car) and that was way too expensive:eek:...so we are flying. Keep looking at NWA...I just booked last week using a frequent flyer for myself and the three DGC I paid cash for a total of $620.00...today the same inboud/outbound flights have been reduced to $420.00 for the three of them.

I don't fly any more so the wife and I take Amtrak from northeast Ohio to Kissimmee. That's from Alliance to Washington then on to Kissimmee. We love it, it is a long trip but very relaxing and fairly cheap. We've done coach the whole way and some sleeper accommodations for half the route, sleepers will run the cost up considerably. We pack a lunch with drinks, snacks books, Ipods, portable DVD player and just sit back, reclining seats are very comfortable, alot of room in a pair and relax. We detrain in Kissimmee, next stop after Orlando, alot less congestion, most everyone gets off in Orlando and it's total chaos getting luggage and securing a ride, same with returning home, everyone standing out in the hot sun waiting to board. Kissimmee has 10 people getting off and about the same going home, you get right on and are away in minutes. There are taxi's there, 5 years ago the fare from Kissimmee to WDw ran 38 bucks, I'm sure the fares have gone up. We use a car service, they are waiting for us even if the train is late, and they do run late, and they give us a 30 minute grocery stop, we love it, alcohol store next door to Publix and January trip ran us 120.00 round trip, very personalized service.

Train travel is not for the control freak or fidgety soul, it can be boring to them. There's a club car and dining car and we're in route for 39 hours start to finish, 6 hour lay over in Washington, but we board at 3 am, are in DC around 4 pm, layover and out around 9pm and traveling all night we're in Kissimmee by 1:30 pm. We have no gripes, runs the both of us, round trip about 450.00.

We did the train once from the U.P to Tallahassee and it was great!
Okay, you have to realize that there's train time. The lines are shared with freight trains and they have the right of way and we got slowed up pretty good in New Orleans. You have to be flexible time wise. We didn't get one of those expensive sleeper cars either. We had our 5 year old and we just slept in the seats and they were comfortable. I'd rather have afforded the sleeper car but we couldn't swing it. The service was superior though. The food excellent, the touring car amazing. You're doing the backyard of America and it's cool. You're not going to see the best sites but it's amazing and historical. Looks like Cityone Express transportation is offering great rates for trips to Disney. Up to four people, it looks like about $40 one way. :goodvibes
