We leave Saturday, and DD is throwing up

We made it! Noone else in our household has gotten at all sick this week, so we're going to Disney World tomorrow!! Because I'm now totally paranoid, I have practically an entire suitcase of antiseptics packed, which I otherwise wouldn't have, but we're going with DD's pediatrician's blessing! :goodvibes

I hope you have a great time, and unfortunately even with your doctors blessing there will still be some very paranoid moms here that will think you are spreading the beginning of the end of the world. :lmao: Have fun!

Ok, I'm going to post my .02. We just got back from WDW two weeks ago. While we were in MGM, I was purchasing something at the cart near the Muppet Movie. This woman rushes up and begs the cast member for some shopping bags. Seems like her kids (note the plural) had been vomitting all day. They had vomitted at breakfast, vomitted at something else, and just vomitted all over the Muppet Movie.:scared1: Needless to say, we didn't see Muppets this trip. What is wrong with people?? :confused3 Perhaps at the first incident a trip back to the hotel would have been in order?? Now, the original poster is entirely correct to go IMOH. The little one is just about fine, noone else is sick. But I can tell you that 4 years ago, my littlest guy caught the stomach virus while at Disney and was sick our last night right into the next morning-and yes folks, we had a 1300 mile drive ahead. Not a pleasant experience. Would be nice if folks looked more at the big picture!
Ah well.

Ah well.

I am so sorry for your little one. Our kids almost always catch something at WDW. We have even had to change our plane tickets because they were too sick to fly. Thankfully you were driving so you could stop along the way as needed. I just wish people would use some common sense. I don't care how much you payed for your vacation, if your kids are sick (meaning vomitting, strep, chicken pox etc.) stay home!!! Splurge for the trip insurance!!!

OP- I am glad everything turned out okay for you and everyone is feeling fine. Have a great trip!

In January we took DS who is 2 on his first trip. Since it was cold/flu season we made sure that while we traveled we kept as clean as possible. We were lucky enough that nobody got even a cold before we left. When we got on the plane I clorox wiped the tray, armrests, and the wall and window. He was too young to take Airborne so I took it upon myself to keep things clean. My mom and I brought along a travel size Clorox Anywhere. When we got to the hotel we sprayed EVERYTHING, counters, toliets, showers, door knobs, telephones, remotes, dressers, tables, faucets, and anything else we could. Even if you don't have any symptoms of something, you could be contagious, so we decided to take care of things for our family. We washed hands a lot, took along the Purel wipes, just looked out for ourselves. Do whatever you have to do to keep your family well!!! Sounds a little over the top but we didn't want to take any chances!!! We had a great, healthy trip!!

Glad it all worked out for the OP and that her family is healthy. Enjoy your trip and keep washing those hands!!

Many, many parents clearly take children who are sick to WDW--and lots of other places. I don't think that was the case here with the OP. Most run of the mill stomach viruses clear up in 24-48 hours. That may be all they were dealing with. Even if it was Rotavirus, it sounds like it had run its course.

Rotavirus, while very common, requires a stool sample to diagnose. It's a term that gets thrown around a lot from any GI illness. It is extremely prevalent; nearly eveyone has been exposed by the time they are 3. Reinfection is possible, but usually much less severe, sometimes asymptomatic. Incubation is only 2 days. It's only passed through the fecal-oral route, so frequent, thorough hand washing is the best prevention. How do I know so much? DD9 just after her third birthday started with simultaneous vomitting and diarrhea within hours after getting off the plane from WDW. The next day, she was admitted to the hospital where she spent the next five days--and was positively diagnosed with Rotavirus. She lost nearly 20% of her body weight--it was a nightmare. Hers was an unusually severe case though. Typical Rotavirus is about 3 days of diarrhea and fever, sometimes with vomitting. It's a normal rite of childhood, but definitely not a time to head to school, vacation or anywhere!

Here's to frequent, thorough handwashing!

As I mentioned briefly in my post, our baby 22months, had severe Rotavirus as well with Strep. She was very ill, but Arnold Palmer's Children's Hospital (we didn't like Centra Care/Celebration as Disney recommended, as doctor was not thorough enough) in Orlando took great care of us. We had a 22 hour drive ahead of us back to Canada, so it was a very scary week for us too. This is why I get so frustrated when I read these posts - we isolate ourselves, cancel trips, etc. for the good of ourselves and the good of others, but many at WDW do not do that. Our pediatric specialists told us they are very frustrated with guests who do not take illness seriously enough while visiting WDW, mostly due to financial reasons.

Hopefully, the OP has a healthy trip, Tiger

Glad it all worked out for you in the end, Tiger. We a dreadful, scary drive that must have been. I remember being so thankful that we were home (well, at my parents) before she really got sick.

Since that experience, I am like a PP. I travel with Clorox wipes and bleach. I wipe down everything, get clean blankets and pillows, give back the bedspreads, wash out the tub with bleach. My DH thinks I am crazy, but I will never forget that illness (which clearly was picked up at WDW).

It's so sad that our babies were so sick while in WDW :( Almost everyone I know at one time or another has been sick at WDW. We had complete, and I mean complete physicals and passed with flying colours before we arrived, so based on those tests and the new tests that the pediatric specialists ran, along with incubation periods, they were 100% positive that she picked up her illnesses while in WDW. We were and are so diligent - wipe down stuff, get good rest, etc. but we must have missed a toy or handle bar or someone coughed on her. In any event, we will never forget how scary it was being so far from home with a very sick infant. The thing that still bugs us to this day is the emergency clinic doc we saw days before her hospitalization. Disney had Centra Care Clinic (on SR535 - Downtown Disney area) pick us up as they are their official hospital (it's Celebration) and although he diagnosed Strep we had to wait an eternity with many other sick kids, and plus, he told us she could go back to the parks. We looked at him with disgust on our faces, and he said that this is what most parents wanted to hear as they don't want to lose money, so he thought we would do the same thing. We said absolutely not and kept her isolated in our resort for 2.5 days (checked out to go to emergency room as she was getting worse - Arnold Palmer Hospital) - also got resort housekeeping to do a total sanitize of room. They thanked us profusely for letting them know that she was very ill with a contagious illness, and said not many guests do this at all = more germs spread. Needless to say, once our daughter ended up in the emergency room again a few days later, it was not good as they told us that the doc more than likely missed the other virus as she more than likely had the symptoms then as well as she didn't get better, but only worse despite being on antibiotics for a couple of days.

We have since travelled to WDW 3 other times since her hospitalization 2 years ago, but we will never forget it. Just wish others who are so selfish in bringing knowingly sick kids on planes, to parks and in resort pools or restaurants would think about those of us who have almost lost our babies due to severe illness while on vacation.
